I think perhaps there's more room for more than one trend at a time these days and so several different trends coexist and overlap for a few seasons. Seems fashion is more inclusive instead of just one trend being the end all be all for that year. But beyond that I think staying true to what suits you best and joining with trends that compliment your overall fashion sensibility is probably the best bet. I know in a year or two everyone will be so over zippers. But I won't. I loved them 10 years ago. I will love them 10 years from now. Just an example . . .

Just as an aside, I feel like trend cycles are lengthening. Does anyone else see that too? 5 years ago it was all about being "on-trend", and that trend changed seasonally, but it seems like trends really stay the course these days.

I saw a shaggy waistcoast (or faux fur vest) in the early 2000s in a Bay Area boutique. It was from Italy. I wanted it then. I had the money, but not the courage to buy it. I regret that. I finally took the plunge and bought one in Nov., but it is not as fab as the one I saw a decade ago.

One time I did impulse purchase an item that has stood me very well. I was in London on a business trip and bought this furry coat (again from Italy). It was a splurge even then (365 pounds).

I got the coat in 1996 and have worn it every year since then, and it's held up! So now it's become my cheapest coat ever, given the usage, even cheaper per year than something from H&M.

I share my story to illustrate Angie's point -- jump in early if you love it.

Nicely put, Khris.

I vote go for it as soon as your body and mind are ready for the look, Louise. Sometimes I like a trend best when it's fringe, sometimes I like them best when they are mainstream - and sometimes I still wear trends when others are sick of the look because I still love it!

I do not think with my head when it comes to trends - I think with my heart. It's a completely emotive love which requires instant gratification.

This is a good question. But I think it also matters how "on trend" one wants to be. If you wear something because you like it, being on trend doesn't matter as much. For example, I have been wearing peasant style tops for a while now, even though they are just now coming back around as a spring trend.

i feel like we are always hearing about things that are on trend, but we never hear when things that were on trend are no longer. i'm sure i have a lot of things in my closet that were a trend at one point but are no longer trendy but are not a classic wardrobe staple either.

MNsara the 1st one I bought was actually a child's sold as a size 12 on ebay! By the time I realised it was a child's I had removed the zip so couldn't return. The 2nd one fits fine but is a bit long for dresses and tunics so this one is hovering in the toss pile. I hit the jackpot with the 3rd which is cropped x

I don't think there's any way of knowing. Some trends stick around until they become staples, and some come and go in a season.

I think that's actually been a recommendation that if you see a trend that speaks to you - don't drag your feet. Get out there, do it, and get the most time out of it!

I know that doesn't address how long anything sticks around though.

Hope to see pics of the new one (and the first two!). Will you keep all three or ?
