I like designer names on clothing but as a petite person, I can never find anything that fits me with having to alter it. If I'm paying that much for a designer item, the at least it could be fit me when I try it on.

I do like designer accessories, like handbags or shoes but not sunglasses because I break them easily. I'd prefer a nice sturdy designer handbag that I can use for a long time. Right now, I have 1 black Coach bag, my new Ralph Lauren bag and some lower end designer bags that I use over and over again.

I find that many of the original designs done in a quality way are from designer labels. I HATE most things with logos on display (if it's small, then fine, but some things...like the giant Tory Burch logos on her tote bags...GAH!).

I have found that falling in love with an item that's expensive and then trying to replicate the look with less expensive items is very dissatisfying to me because it never really quite is up to par with the original.

I have also found that some designers skimp on quality and try to get by with their name alone and this is beyond frustrating (e.g. a recent 3.1 Philip Lim sweater dress that was made of an acrylic blend). I think it's easier to find quality in the designer section but that doesn't mean you can assume it's all quality product!

At this point, my wardrobe is so big that I don't need anything...I'd rather save my money for something special.

Also, r.e. a comment about about carrying designer bags...I saw a woman yesterday carrying a LV bag but she was wearing too short bootcut Levi's, a fleece zippy, and running shoes. The bag just looked silly! Designer logo's only emphasize your style-less-ness if you wear them like that!

I care less about designers than I do fit and quality...that said, the work of the designers is fascinating, and I love reading about the industry. I don't care for having items with visible logos or branding (for example, I love Coach bags but prefer the models with out the ubiquitous "C"s). If there is something I truly love, I'll save up for it and get it, but I'm not into labels. I do a LOT of discount shopping. My biggest questions are: 1) does it look good on me; and 2) is it well made?

Yes! It is not for the status, it is for the superior design, fit and fabrication you find with designer clothes. I especially love smaller design brands, and stay away from the mainstream lines of M Kors or C Klein. I find there is a passion in the clothes and simply way more cool factor. I constantly stalk places like Shopbob for designer items and save them in favorites, when they become affordable (like, 50% LOL), I pounce.

Having said all of this, I am also a bargain shopper! I love places like TJ Maxx and Ross where I find things between $5-$15 that can satisfy my desire for novetly without paying a lot.

I do not have the budget for designer items but if that changed I would not be opposed. I love to watch the fashion shows and to wear some of those pieces would be a dream come true. I would totally pay to wear a designers vision.

I like good quality clothes. Sometimes they're "designer' and sometimes they're not.
I look for good fabrics, and garments that are well made - no wonky hems, seams, or mis-matched plaids. As Amy pointed out in her post, not all designer clothes are good quality. I just looked at a Michael Kors camel coat with a fake fur collar that looked like road kill. I wouldn't take it as a gift.

I want to ask a question back...where is the between designer and not designer? If I said I loved Guess jeans, is that designer? And the label is not the thing I love, it is just the way I identify the look that the label represents. So I know I like to go to a Guess shop because I will find something I might buy. And I assume that people who have the money might feel the same about Prada. At that level of design, it is not even a fantasy to purchase what they make because the cost, no matter the quality, is beyond what I find acceptable.

But I am fascinated by the designers. I actually have the audacity to say I 'like' one. I like to see the pretty things they come up with and the horrible things also. I love waiting to see if something filters down to a label I can afford. But I am never tempted to go buy something designer. This can also be effected by the fact that designers use the IT as the body they design for. And unless it is the mad men trend, the idea of my body in anything they make is just ...ha ha.

Ok, let me give the Americans some credit. the preppies fit every body! DK is a great designer for the non-IT. When I think about it, it is exactly the Americans or Sand, which is similar here, that I am most tempted by. But I think it is the look and not the label. I really don't feel some looks filter down. Preppy is, it seems no matter who makes it, a higher cost look than say 'biker girl'. Is that because the look itself needs better quality to 'make' the look? Another thread perhaps. Sorry if I wondered in my thoughts!

I don't care about designer clothes for the "status" they supposedly confer to the wearer (logo bags, etc.), but I do appreciate the better quality of designer pieces. To a large extent you do get what you pay for. That said, there are plenty of lower priced, good-quality brands out there.

Like most people these days, my wardrobe is a mix of "high" and "low" items. I would never buy something just for the designer name. If it's flattering and well-made and I can afford it--no matter whose name is or isn't on the label--I'll buy it.

It's two-fold. I could not care less about a Louis Vuitton bag or any of those things which are supposed to automatically grant you style through mere ownership. I'm not into status. That said, as I've come to be familiar with more and more up-and-coming designers, I do start to feel like there is a design edge, and hopefully improved workmanship as well, compared to some no-name brand. I focus on how beautiful something is to me (and believe me, I can't afford any of it anyway!). By the way I do not get Escada. Their stuff is not special to me at all, and the prices are relatively astronomical. But brands like Theory, Milly, Alexander McQueen Piazza Sempione, etc etc...I do take notice and will give them a closer look that I think is merited.

Oh my goodness. *Of course* I'm interested in pret a porter and couture designer labels and wearing them! By a billion percent.

There is much to be appreciated from a design, exclusivity and quality point of view. And above all, I totally support the legacy and superior craftsmanship behind designer brands. Those pieces are often like wearing works of art - and I am a huge supporter of great art.

That being said, I'll wear an H&M, Gap and Zara item with pleasure - and *with* my designer boots, jacket, coat or bag. I enjoy mixing high and low end items in one outfit - that has actually become part of my style.

Yes. I associate certain brands with quality, comfort, and fit - those that work for me - and am willing to pay for them. I also appreciate the care and skill that goes into the design and manufacture of many designer clothing brands. This doesn't mean I blindly buy a brand, however.

I have 0 interest in designer labels. The only thing a designer label signifies to me is a possible improvement in quality, although that's not always the case. For example, many of the Michael Kors garments I've seen in department stores--as great as the styles are--bear shoddy workmanship.
