Fashiontern, in Europe, a carry-on suitcase was less than 20 inches...19 or 18 although that may have changed. Check with your airline before trying to carry on a 20 incher.

Very impressed! I typically only travel by car, so I'm not so careful. However, years ago, I purchased compression bags (the old plastic - suck-out-the-air types) for our adoption trip to China. I loved using them (although the bags were quite heavy).

Your travel outfit is classically fab -- the animal print shoes add a bit of flair, and I admire anyone with a sleep, but knit black jacket!

Joy, the biggest Eagle Creek folder is 51 x 36 cm. That's about 20"x14". It takes up all of the bottom of a suitcase, without room for anything next to it, but it does fit in a carry-on suitcase. My favorite toiletries bag is also an airline freebie. It is fabric, has a mesh pocket on one side, and a little detachable bag for toothbrush & toothpaste. I used to use an LL Bean toiletries bag, but it is much too large.

Over the years I have come to pack much like you do. I sometimes use 2 packing folders but put almost everything in them because it compresses and I cam get more in the suitcase. The biggest EC packing folder does not fit a carry-on, at least not an international one ( smaller than US ). It is great for a big or tall man doing business travel. I really like your travel outfit. You look cute but professional.
My favorite rollable toilleteries bag was an airline free-be years ago. It is just the right size with lots of pockets, but see through plastic. If something leaks, it stays in. It can hang on a bathroom towel bar so everything is handy and organized. A hanging bag in the bathroom is a necessity on a cruise.
I hang hanging clothing, but leave most in the suitcase in the closet. Exception has been stays in Air B&Bs. Then I unpack more. But those stays are longer. It helps to have a bag for dirty laundry.

We are not worthy! Wow At the very least it avoids the jumble of clothes that inevitably happens when the suitcase is turned upright!
*Um...so I've heard....

I’m very impressed. My shoes take up a lot of room because I have big feet. We’re going on an ecotour this summer, with travel on a small plane, so I had to get a smaller bag. I’m still not doing carryon. Our carryon is mostly camera equipment. My husband has so much equipment that he asked me to carry some.

Rachy, I sort of unpack. When I get to my room I put the toiletry kit and hair brush in the bathroom, and hang up anything that tends towards wrinkles. Hopefully I have a double room with an extra bed. If yes then I use that bed to layout all the pouches and the folder and my laptop bag, while keeping the shoes in the luggage on a rack in the closet.

The only time I'll put items in the drawers is if the hubby is traveling with me and we have only one bed and the trip is long enough to warrant it. Hubby usually has an explosion of clothes on the floor or on the chair somewhere and if I don't keep my stuff separate it gets chaotic!

Regarding toiletries, I used to just use a pouch for these as well and that definitely had some advantages as it took up less room and weighed less-- the toiletries just kind of fill in the nooks and crannies in the bottom of the bag while still being all together in a pouch. However I had some incidents of cracked containers and even though I had things sorted into ziploc baggies it was a mess. So I got this toiletry kit.

I rarely put anything in the outside pocket as then it can be a bit difficult to stow. I also fret that anything that's in there is going to get squeezed a lot in the process of stowing, so only things like Teva's that can handle the squeeze, or flat items like paperwork or a flat envelope clutch.

Fashintern - yes, I put things in the folder that don't need to be in there (jeans, tees, sweaters etc). I don't roll anything anymore. I fold Konmari style. However if it's a beach resort type of trip I have another pouch that I use for bathing suits and cover-ups, as I wouldn't want to squish my bathing suit padded cups in the folder.

I should also note that I am short so the pants folded once and layered on top might not work for taller folks. Sometimes I'll fold them in thirds and fill in one side of the folder, with folded tops on the other side, and toppers on top. Then maybe a scarf over it all to protect things.

Incidentally I'm probably taking a few items out before I fly today. I wanted to deliberately over-pack for this example, to show just how much I can fit in there this way! What I've got in here is easily enough for 2 weeks!

Fun to get a masterclass in packing!

@Rachy - I always unpack. Given I usually aim for carryon, there is never too much to repack and I like having to refold and organise all my items in the case.

I love those folders! Unfortunately, mine is the largest size, which was useful for the two of us traveling to a wedding, but otherwise not necessary. I'd be much better off with a smaller one. I have this little fantasy of slipping one into a work bag for a business trip, and even being able to put together an outfit for freetime, but looking at me carrying it, no one could tell I was doing anything except going to the office for a normal day.

I have used folding helpers a couple times--when using the folder, and also a flip n fold packing for the move. I'm amazed how much it helps to have things that anally exact.

RL, I hear you on as many med supplies as toiletries--so glad my kid's asthma is fading away! (shhh--don't want to jinx it).

I never mean to unpack in hotel rooms, but I almost always do. It's sort of pathological.

kellygirl, there's a video of "how it works" here, but I agree with you that seeing it irl is helpful too. Packing three shirts in one layer, oh my! You'd never see that in EC's official videos. https://www.containerstore.com.....ack-it-cub

Shiny, do you put stuff in the folder that doesn't have to be there? I always figure that my knits, and probably things like that jeans jacket, aren't going to get wrinkly anyway, so why bother with the folder.

Wow! This is so awesome, Shiny! I am the worst packer—so inefficient. Most of my work travel is by car so I never have to worry about cramming stuff in a carry on. The visuals are so helpful—I didn’t really “get” the packing pouches or cubes and how they work. My last business trip (by plane) was only a couple of days and everything fit in my backpack. Thanks for sharing. I feel like I could go on a longer work trip now! Ha!

This is inspired by Featherwitch's thread regarding packing cubes, which I don't use. I use the Eagle Creak Pack-it system but with the pouches rather than the cubes.

I'm leaving tomorrow for a five day business trip to FL. I need clothes for the business conference portion during the day (frigid AC), and also for the evening events (temps look to range from mid-high 80s and then they drop down lower). So a tricky situation, but I'm determined to do carry on.

Pic 1: the Eagle Creak folder laid out on my bed.

Pic 2: I've folded my tops as the first layer.

Pic 3: I've folded my toppers next (a suit jacket and a jean jacket; I'm wearing the third on the plane).

Pic 4: I then layer on the pants across the top. I'm taking three pairs and wearing the fourth.

Pic 5: The fold-it comes with this plastic piece you're supposed to use to fold things. I don't use it that way. I use it to squish everything down and keep it in place..

Pic 6: I've enveloped it all together with the velcro sides. This is quite a sandwich of clothes.

Pic 7: I use the shoe pouches. Since I'm taking lighter- weight shoes rather than booties or sneakers, there's room in each for a half a sandal. So three shoes plus the ones I am wearing on the plane.

Pic 8: packing the suitcase. If I'm taking belts they get wrapped around the interior first. Then I put in my toiletries kit at the bottom near the wheels. I'm TSA-Pre so i don't have to remove my liquids. This toiletries kit is awesome as it's slimline. In the center section I've got several plastic zip baggies dividing stuff like AM skin/makeup, Shower stuff, PM skin routine, medicines. In the side pockets I've got a comb, toothbrush, nail file, and contacts on the other side.

Pic 9: next I put in the shoe pouches and tuck them under the toiletries. Here is where the pouches begin to shine versus cubes!! The pouches and contents fill the nooks and crannies of the luggage. Mine has interior rods from the handle so pouches make sense.

Pic 10: I add in a small pouch that contains my pajamas. For this trip I'm taking a cotton PJ set from Victoria's Secret plus a tank top. I tucked all my delicate jewelry within the folds of the pj's to protect them.

Pic 11& 12: I always take a big roller brush because I can't do my hair without it. I roll it up in a Turbie Towel. Then put it in an Eagle Creek pouch. And tuck it in between the shoes.

Pic 13: I use a smaller compression pouch for underwear, socks and bras.

Pic 14&15: I then put the folder of clothes on top, upside down. This helps with packing. Note I still also have the internal mesh pocket of my luggage and the outer pocket as well.

Pic 16: My Briggs Reilly tote that slips over the handles of my bag. I will take this when I need to bring more than can fit in the roller bag. I have other pouches and use them to organize within. So for example if I need to bring a packable puffer, or extra toppers and scarves, etc. I can pack quite a bit in this tote.

Pic 17: My Lo's&Sons laptop bag, which also has a sleeve to go over my roller bag handle. It fits a lot of stuff like ipad, laptop, book, chargers, sunglasses. a cashmere wrap, and Los&Sons cross body. But it won't fit extra clothes/toppers.
