It surely can be done, but sounds complicated if too delicate or too thick.

ooh, the side zip. Ouch.

ETA: and crepe. Everything will show unless it's taken in perfectly in both pants and lining.

Let us know how it goes! This type of alteration eludes me (I can do basic hemming & waist tightening work, but sewing anything slippery by hand is my royal nightmare)

Thanks everyone. I’ll take them in and see what they say.
@star and ginger fingers crossed they can do it because it won’t cost much then.
@suntiger my weight has been pretty stable for a few years and if I put on weight I’m guessing my waist also get bigger.
@vildy I’ll mention that to them. I’m not a sewer except for small mending jobs so rely on a tailor
@indigoprint- they are not wool. Feel like a crepe material? The lining is not attached at the hem.
@ phoebe -They said the same thing. The lining is not a big deal but the side zip etc could complicate things

That they are lined is probably not a significant complication because most linings are significantly less tailored than the garment itself and also can easily be detached enough to accommodate an alteration.

Definitely worth inquiring

Wool is a good fabric to work with very cooperative. If it is a basic" take a bit in" and you love the pants it might be worth investigating. Is the lining attached at the hem?

Look, sometimes I cheat and straighten that curve in tandem. Clip the excess and give it a no ravel finish. But I'm a big picture vs a detail gal.

I figure it would be a difficult and expensive alteration, and would keep them in the HZ in case of weight fluctuation.

I always take pants in at the seat and it works really well most of the time.

Ah, good call! At the seat is traditionally how men's trousers are taken in. Often the waistband is already seamed there. I hope they can do it, since that's a super good deal.

Thanks Ginger. They cost me $20NZ but retail at about $250. I will give them a call good idea.
Update: they said it’s much cheaper to pull it in at the seat than the sides so to bring it in and they’ll quote.

In concept, altering lined pants is twice as much work as unlined pants. Plus managing how they are joined together. I could see it being as much as the pants cost - which might still be worth it to you. It's a good idea to just call and ask the price or a baseline.

Thank you cjh and Jenni. I have an alterations place I go to. They charge about $25 for hems but I am thinking taking in pants with a lining will be complicated. I guess they would be the ones to advise me.

What about trying those mall store repair places? The name of them escapes me but I used one once who were OK, though it might have only been for hemming. Cost was reasonable I thought.

I’d advise contacting a tailor in your area to find out the typical price for such a job. I used to do alterations years and years ago. I know department stores that used to alter customer purchases charged quite a bit less than tailor shops. But that is so far in the past, only by finding out current charges could you make that decision, if you’re willing to pay what they charge.

A while ago I picked up a pair of Ann Taylor pants second hand. They are near new, fit beautifully in the waist but seem too big in the hips and thighs. I realise they are lined and so wondering if they are worth taking to a tailor. Otherwise I’ll give them to a friend with different proportions to me. Probably hard to tell by the pictures.
