That is a very cool jacket. Kinda steampunk. I'm amazed at how well the dying worked... and on Mo's jacket too.

I've never dyed an item of clothing before. That scares me. I've dyed yarn... but I don't think that's the same thing.

That color looks SO good on you. I'm glad you saved the blazer and thank you for telling the story. I have dyed washable things and then you have to launder them seperately and eventually one of them winds up in the wrong laundry pile and ruining some of my other clothes. But having a blazer dyed wouldn't be a problem, since it gets drycleaned instead. Brilliant!

wow! i had no idea of the potential of dye! it looks deliciously vintage-y, maybe b/c of the pleated skirt and chestnut booties? so glad you can wear your love on your sleeve, quite literally ;D

that made more sense in my head, lol.

I've had mixed results with dying, but I think it's because I use RIT instead of the nicer dyes. Going to try a different kind the next go-round!

My first dye attempt luckily was also a success. Of sorts. I had a sage green blazer that I wanted more army green. I thought brown dye would mix with the more pastelish green to make it olivey, but it instead took all the brown. But I was prepared to let go if it didn't work and actually like it brown. The buttons looked dirty green lol, so I switched them out for silver fleur de lis which make me like the jacket all that much more. I bought a separate, army green jacket later this year, so that base is now covered, too!

I've yet to dye my first garment, but after reading all your success stories I'd certainly be tempted to try it if there was something in my closet that could do with a bit of a transformation. Your blazer is now a beautiful shade of blue, Kate, so happy that it worked out so well!

Fabulous, Kate, I love the new colour. It's actually better than a solid blue, and so good that you can continue to use your special jacket.

I LOVE this story. Thanks for posting it. Unfortuantly my dye job was a do-it-yourself failure long ago, and that discouraged me from ever trying again. Your experience is inspiring.

Since I wore this jacket today for "dress the decade," it reminded me that I wanted to post an SYC success story.

Back in 1994, I had bought this blazer when I attended the very first professional conference where I made a presentation. So I had some emotional attachment to it. While I have always loved the cut, with many buttons and with the princess seams continuing up to the shoulders, the original color was a soul-sucking beige that never really flattered me.

Two years ago during one of my closet clean-outs, I realized I hadn't worn it in about 6 years, but I wasn't prepared to toss it because of sentimental value. So I investigated the possibility of dyeing it. I found a mail-in dyeing service in NYC that charged only $25 to dye a garment one of 8 basic colors (more expensive to match a particular color). The caveat was that only natural fibers will take the dye, and this jacket is 50/50 rayon & polyester.

I called them up and asked what would happen under dye, and the sales rep said probably the dye would take partially. So I took a risk and requested the bright blue dye and sure enough the blazer came back a pleasant, heathered blue that has a nice texture somewhat resembling the current trend of garments made with "space-dyed" yarn. The jacket did shrink circumferentially by about a size, as the dyeing service had forewarned, but with a bit of steam and stretching on the bias, it fits without a problem.

I love this blazer now more than ever - a true SYC success!

What is your experience with dyeing?
