Another INTJ checking in, since Approprio commented that she's never seen so many female INTJs in one place. Neither have I, and it makes me smile that such an online forum has so many of us :)

The pinterest link for INTJ was helpful to me, actually. I've been feeling like my wardrobe has too many options, it makes it hard to decide what to wear. So I'm paring down to my favorites, and if I wear something and it doesn't stay my favorite, out it goes (or at least in to the holding bin). Hoping this streamlines my decision making and makes me even happier with my wardrobe!

Ooh the cognitive preference is much more interesting to me than the personality interpretation! Thanks for sharing the link Approprio, lots to read (and think about) there. I think might cognitively reclassify as I over E, though I'm quite social.

(And, interestingly, my husband who's not particularly social would flip to extroverted for energy orientation.)

Hi Roxanne~ I also took this test, but it was probably about 20 years ago! And I don't really recall what I was, but definately the creative type which I am. Sounds like you are as well. Bravo! Now that I'm 60 however, dressing in all the colors I used to like, all at once, haha doesn't so much work, or I look like a clown. Don't know how old you are but it's very true that with age, we change, we grow, our styles change, and so should it. I find myself now wearing much more a neutral palette, but then with accessories with flair, like handbags, scarves, and perhaps shoes and jewelry sometimes, although I'm a pearl girl. For me, I find a basic wardrobe of neutrals works best now that I'm older. So to get back to your original question, yes, my personality shines through more in my accessories now that I'm older. Not so much in my wardrobe anymore. I love basics. My go to outfit now is a black cashmere sweater, great fitting black trousers, or camel, Tod's Driving Mocs, my Cartier watch, and a fun handbag. Latest is from Aldo, a fun velvet one which I love. I love Aldo's handbags as much as I love Chanel or Hermes~

Now I'm on my desktop I was able to see Approprio's link! I don't think I've dressed like either the ESFJ ( which I think I am) and definitely not the ESFP!
Fashiontern, I like you too. I'll just stop answering the "whys" if I get sick of them. Actually my second daughter is INTP which is every letter different than the ESFJ I think I am. We have certainly clashed more over the years than I have with my other two children. We are all good, but I have wondered if that was partly why, just different on everything. My husband is an introvert but came out ISFJ which was otherwise the same as me. Somehow I've managed to get 3 introverted children which I feel is somewhat unfair! I have to rely on my best friend for shopping fun mostly!

The last time I took Myers-Briggs I was just over the border for being ISFJ (border between F/T), but I've always been ISTJ in the past. Personality wise, I am somewhere between being a Defender and Logistician so I think my mixed test results make sense to me. I think in my personal life, I am more of a Defender but given my line of work i have developed more Logistical traits over time as well.

In terms of my wardrobe however, the description from Harmonica's photo for the ISTJ was me to a T --"Practical and all in the same color". All day, every day.

The description of my type emphasizes analysis throughout. That is extremely accurate. Knowing, understanding and analyzing are the same thing to me. Over the years, I’ve learned that not everyone is like this, so I try to soften my questions, but occasionally people are still taken aback. Please forgive me if I come across as looking down on you. It is unlikely that i intend it that way.
I was surprised, reading through, at how accurately the description applies to my son. I’ve always thought we were very similar, but he has no interest in taking this type of quiz.

Jenni NZ, that explains a lot. I like you, and you often have good things to say, but so often I look at our exchanges and scratch my head. I don’t know if you’ve had the same feeling about me. I always try to remain diplomatic as I ask you more to figure out where you are coming from. Now I see that nearly every letter in your abbreviation is different than mine! I think it is valuable to hear perspectives different than my own, and hope you don’t feel put off by my continual “why?”

Interesting doing BC's test. I've done Internet tests many times and once did a workplace course with a facilitator, in 2002. Every other time I've been ESFJ. On this one I was ESFP-T for turbulent. I found the P part unlikely rather than J: but am amused by Harmonica's pic which says that ESFPs would match their socks to their earrings as there is more truth to that than I like to admit! I think the Feeling part is particularly important in my wardrobe and maybe why I've been really enjoying your posts Roxanna!

Hmm. I have traditionally tested as INFP, but I took that test and got “DEFENDER” (ISFJ-T) as a result. I think my responses have shifted with age, and I know I handle certain things with more balance and a different mindset than when I was younger. I’m not sure how this is reflected in my style though. I’ll have to look further. I’ve never really read much about ISFJ!

ETA: I just read the description more fully, and it sure does seem to fit! I read it out loud to my husband and he agreed. https://www.16personalities.com/isfj-personality

Fun! Thank you for the link BC. I just took the test and discovered I am a CAMPAIGNER (ENFP-T). I am fiercely independant (true), crave creativity (true) and freedom (OMG so true), and like social relationships (true again).
So, how does this affect my wardrobe you ask?
I like freedom. Freedom of changing my mind in the morning but also freedom of suddenly packing and leaving for adventure. So I need multiple wardrobes in fact. Capsules are a great solution. Yet they have to be flexible enough to leave room for last minute creativity.

Roxanna, we are similar. We share the "feelings" trait and, like you, I have what others (including my husband) might call a large wardrobe. But this is not the only thing we have in common. I too love (no, wait, lu-urve) to mix and match items, I too have a hard time letting them go... until I let them go and then never think about them again. Now that I know we are almost personality sisters, I understand why I found your posts so engaging.

Gaylene, agreed! There's only so much we can infer from cognitive preferences, because so many other things guide our tastes and choices - everything from the cultures that form us, to the shapes and colours that suit us.

That being said, I do find the idea of hard-wiring useful, because knowing what can and can't be changed is a good guideline for self-development. For instance, I know I have a strong preference for _N_P, and I probably always will, so trying to change that will make me miserable and frustrated. But the other preferences are less pronounced, so I can be an introspective and analytical INTP or a sociable and adaptive ENFP when I don't want to be an ENTP wiseass.

INTJ til I die! Lol that test told me I’m ISTJ but I’m not buying it. Every description of an INTJ is me to a T.

I’d guess that it’s reflected in my dressing in the sense that I’m rebellious against the idea of what I “should” be wearing. I dress for my own personal comfort in the sense of feeling physically comfortable and that I look good.

Thank you, Approprio! I tend to avoid these discussions since the applications and inferences people make usually have no relation to my own thinking and readings into MBTI/Jungian theory. The introduction to the article to which you have linked provides a good explanation of why I’m dubious about the insights a person would gain about her wardrobe choices after being labeled by an Internet “test”.

ETA. One caution: the whole premise of MBTI/Jungian theory is that our cognitive preferences are wired into our brain so that they NEVER change, Ou behaviors though, can vary tremendously as we grow older, learn more, and adapt to our environments.

Heh. Don't think I've ever seen so many INTJ's in one place before. Are we herding cats here or what?

By my reckoning, the Pinterest board pics are around 15 years out of date and about as accurate as most of the visual references I find for Kibbe, so best taken with a large pinch of salt. That said, my ESFP ex (may he rest in peace) would totally have dressed like that if he could have gotten away with it.

It just so happens that one of my students has been doing a project based on the type indicators, so I recently did a bit of background reading on the Jungian psychology it's based on. (OK actually, I totally went down the rabbit hole.) It seems that most of the Internet's MBTI buffs think the quizzes are inaccurate and the best way to type yourself is to look into the cognitive function theory behind it to figure out how your mind really works.

Having done this myself, I think I agree with them. If you have the time and inclination to self-analyse you might enjoy drilling down into the underlying theory. I liked this website:
http://mbti-notes.tumblr.com/basics

Interesting thread - I’m ENFJ (https://www.16personalities.com/enfj-personality) (have always been on the E/I cusp with strong NF and very strong J). Maybe the strong J’s predilection for planning has led me to my current moderate wardrobe that can be easily mixed and matched (lots of navy, black, and burgundy accents with a narrow range of silhouettes and clothing types) and the passion of my personality type perhaps has supported my defined style (dressy and dresses at all times, aiming for vintage elegance on weekends and polished sophistication at the office). Fascinating idea to look for these links!

Whenever I've done those quizzes for fun, the results have been similar to when I had it done "for real" years ago--INTJ, very close to the line on perceiving/judging, and even closer on thinking/feeling. What appeals to me most on Approprios link are the ENTJ outfits and everything IN except the two types that are supposed to match best. I think they're translating some personality elements into clothing differently than I would. Like the bow ties/bows and very swishy bell bottoms. What do those elements mean to them? And yes, thinking and judging (not being judgemental, just figuring things out & deciding) are how I work.

I'm ISTJ-A (logistician) according to the test I just took (took it once before but couldn't remember the results).

I don't know how any of that affects my wardrobe; but I do know that I'm often very cynical or pessimistic (the world is doomed, the zombies are coming, etcetera), and I see that reflected in my dystopian leanings. I'm also what I call a kamikaze fatalist: the glass isn't half empty or half full. It's dirty, and I'm going to have to wash it. While I'm washing it, it's going to break & cut my hand & I'm going to have to go to hospital for stitches. While I'm there, I'm going to contract a flesh eating infection that is going to slowly rot my body so that they have to keep cutting pieces of me off until there's nothing left of me but a tiny nub.

So I'm drawn to shredded sweaters, distressed jeans, tactical or practical boots, shooting perfectly good clothes with shotguns, and so on.

I'm also a bit shy shy IRL, so I'll often either try to wear something low contrast and minimal so I blend in; or I'll go for something that (I hope) makes me look like I'll put a spell on you or hex you or maybe even shank you if you try to approach, etc lol

Between my lifestyle (rural, homesteading, etcetera), I often tend to go for colors that don't show dirt because otherwise I'd be replacing my clothes every few days.

So I do see how my personal understanding of myselfaffects my clothing choices, even if I don't understand the results of that test. Now, I'm off to go read up on it and see if it matches with my vision of myself at all

ENFP and I like a big wardrobe too. I tend to dress according to my mood and have always rebelled at being told "what to wear" as I like to feel free to make my own choices.

Fun question!

I have a profound love for great craftmanship, the skills and quality that comes with it. It resonates with the search for deep meaning that's supposed to aline with Advocats/INFJs. I'm also goal oriented, like INFJs. Before YLF I was imnersed in our baby/toddler/school boys and had lost every sense of style and fashion. I set a goal to build my wardrobe from scratch and become more authentic in my dressing. It's an ongoing process, but I'm at a pretty happy place now.

The pic below made me laugh because of it's accuracy. I'm supposed to put effort into looking like I-just-threw-some-random-clothes-on-which-happen-to-make-an-outfit.

Thanks for the link to the test, BC. I took it and found that I am INFP-T, like lisa p. I am highly turbulent, which is no surprise!

I can see how this affects my wardrobe in that I am an idealist, so I am always looking to improve on what I have and also add new pieces that can develop other sides of my personality. This means that I shop a lot more than I would like and more than my wallet can handle! I too put a high importance on being able to dress according to how I feel on a particular day, which means I need a pretty decent-sized wardrobe. I think this must be due to my high "feeling" score as opposed to being more "thinking".

Hmm. I have always been ISTJ, and taking the quick test again, I am again. ISTJ-T, very strongly so - every factor 65%-82%. And I would never voluntarily dress like the ISTJ in approprio's link! (Though I honestly can't see myself in any of them, so take that for what it's worth!)

Today I am INTP - T according to BP's link. I am always "I" on these tests and I love the addition of T for turbulent. But according to Liz's link I would say I dress more INFJ although that does not exactly fit either. If I had to describe my ideal outfit, it would be elegant from afar, and all the more interesting if I let you get close enough to see it better - but I probably won't.

Every online version of this test I take, I come out as INTJ. On BC's test, this is "Architect."

On Approprio's Pinterest link, I can't say I identify with the fashion look associated with INTJ. (I don't often wear all black, but the INTP look is the one that seems closest to something I would wear.)

I am not a uniform dresser. I have a lot of clothes. I like trends. My closet is organized by color and season. I like color and I try to wear colors that suit my physical appearance -- that is, I am not exactly dressing for personality. In fact, I often think my appearance is at odds with my personality; I look quite a bit softer than I actually am.

Ok, I just wanna say that, yes, those are my clothes in Approprio’s link, but I’m pretty sure I come off less hoochie Which is maybe too bad... lol...

In years past, I took several online Myers-Briggs tests, but my understanding is that you're supposed to have it professionally done for it to be accurate. Having said that, the online tests always come out INTJ or ENTJ for me -- so, consistently intuitive/thinking/judging, and either introverted or extraverted, depending on the day, haha. I know my closet needs to be organized! It's colour-coded and everything. It's neither minimal nor maximal. I need choices, but too much and I'm overwhelmed and irritable.

ETA I just took Betty Crocker's 12-minute Myers-Briggs test and it came out as "Commander: ENTJ-T" (51% turbulent, whatever that means).

This is a fun question!

I'm hyper-literal and very logical, and it's totally reflected in my personal style. I just can't with the cold-shoulder tops or dresses over pants, or belts on the top of things that don't actually require a belt. They're great for other people but I am overwhelmed and confused by this stuff. So my clothes are also extremely straightforward and logical. Simple, solid-color, functional, with no confusing non-functional elements.

I also have a teensy wardrobe because any more than that is overwhelming to me and I am continually aware that I can only wear one outfit at a time.
