Thank you, Runcarla. Maybe I can save some fruit for the birds or grandchildren on the grape vines. The beetles get worse each day.. and will soon start on the butterfly bushes and rose of Sharon.

Oh I love seeing all your beautiful, luscious flowers, green plantings and veggies! Thanks for sharing. So much work underlying the lovely sights. I just took some photos of my rather generic annuals in standard plastic pots, but they are doing pretty well right now. The petunias are bushy instead of stringy and the snapdragons are really interesting colors. I went to a different garden shop this year, so that might account for the difference.

I’ve noticed again this year that the vincas and marigolds in the pots on ground level are chewed down to the stem. I think it’s earwigs and I’ve put diatomaceous earth pellets in those pots but it’s probably too late. I don’t remember to avoid those from year to year, I guess, because this isn’t the first time! In pic 5, you can see how even one vinca up on the deck has been chewed.

The landscape plantings include some scraggly coreopsis, one lone sedum, a huge and gleaming bed of dark burgundy coral bells, and two nice and two bedraggled Annabelle hydrangeas (two others died outright after one year) which have struggled from the beginning since they are in rock covered foundation plantings and it’s Hot Hot Hot full sun for half the day. The landscaping was redone during an extremely stressful time of my last two years of working, so I relied on the company we hired and didn’t do any research myself.

Anyway, here are some various shots of my pots of annuals on my back deck.

We lost virtually all our shrubs and perennials in Snowvid-21 which hit TX in February, so I’m especially enjoying seeing these beautiful blooming gardens. If all goes according to plan, our landscaper will install phase 1 of the shrub replacement tomorrow. Prices are high due to scarcity so we’ll be spreading this out over a couple of years.
I’m amazed and impressed at those of you growing peach trees in less than optimal environments! Do you know what varieties your trees are? I was raised in Georgia peach country and can eat my weight in them twice over in the prime summer months. Thankfully one of the families that owns a lot of orchards in Middle GA started The Peach Truck a few years ago, so now I more easily can get my fix of the real deal. Their “tour” has stops through the US East Coast and parts of the Midwest, and they ship to every continental US states that allow them.

Your gardens are all so beautiful! Carla, I love your roses. I don't have many spots to put roses here, but I did plant a rugosa in front, hidden among the catmint, which seems to help keep the deer and rabbits away from it, as you say. And I'm trying a little standard rose in back -- an experiment because I don't know if the conditions are good (or if I can keep the deer at bay).

It's so interesting to see when different things bloom in different locations. Though our lilacs and apples blossoms come earlier than in the east, the peonies come out around the same time as yours, Carla. And the roses.

And Janet is several weeks ahead. Daylillies are still in small bud here, and hydrangea are just barely beginning to form flower heads (some varieties).

Warning, photo overload! :)

Of note: the irises are done now -- the first few photos are from several weeks ago.

#3 = the reason I struggle to grow some things!

The peony bushes are coming into flower now (peony trees are finished).

JAileen: we have peaches, too! #14. I have to watch the little tree carefully and quite a few of the fruit won't make it, but we should get about 8 to 10 beautiful peaches in a few months.

#15-17: I've just planted a few things in the back in front of my office window (where the peach tree also is.) I don't know if anything will grow here -- the soil gets quite compacted in parts of this bed for reasons I'm not sure about, and it's also heavy shade all morning with bright sun in afternoon. Anyway, I'm giving it a go. I improved the soil and tried to pick sensibly so we'll see.

#18-23 -- the back garden now. It's a lot to care for. One reason I'm not on the forum much these days!

#24-28 -- what's going on up on the deck. So far. I found this reproduction Miro for free on the street and took it home. :)

I'm glad that your roses survived. I think the deer waited until our bushes were at their best and then had a party back there. DH saw a rabbit nibbling on a bush last evening so apparently we've got them, too. I guess the next step is cages for the roses to protect them from the rabbits because there is no way we can keep them out of the yard. I like the idea of a guard plant and may get to the nursery today and find out what's available. The rose in #3/4 is beautiful.

Those roses are so pretty! We had at least 15 rose bushes at our old home. My husband became obsessed with them for a while, and our garden looked amazing for a few years (we got married in our yard, and spent many months working on the planting beds in preparation). At that house, a mere 10 miles away from here, the conditions are perfect for roses — lots of sun, soil with great drainage, etc. Here they are hopeless. We still own the old house, but unfortunately the string of tenants over the past 15 years didn’t do anything to maintain the rose bushes and they are all gone, except two. One at the garden gate, and one out in front of the house at the end of the sidewalk — I’m glad that one survived because it was a gift from my friend who died last year from cancer. The current tenant sends me pictures of it when it blooms.

Carla, yes, we have peaches! I always tell anyone who will listen that you can never have too many peaches. During the few weeks it’s peach season, we gorge on them. We also give them away. Very few people turn them down. We don’t get peaches every year. A late frost kills them off some years. With global warming, though, we’re getting them more and more.

We have five peach trees, but need to take out the two elderly ones. I think we’ll do that this fall.

Oh, @ Bonnie - I share your pain! When I first planted roses here (home since 2014) the rabbits decimated the bushes! I couldn’t believe they went after something so thorny, but they stripped off all the leaves. I was so mad! We put chicken wire cages around the plants, and planted nepeta (cat mint) Russian sage, lavender and salvia around the base. They are aromatic, and rabbits are supposed to hate the smell. They also hide the chicken wire. I lost one plant, but the others recovered. 3 of my roses started blooming this weekend!

1.Oscar Peterson - a tall shrub rose
#2. Dr. Huey - inherited with the house, it is actually root stock used for grafting, and not grown for its own sake. The grafted rose is long gone and the doctor is ‘in the house’! No fragrance, but masses of red blooms.

#3. Gertrude Jekyll - last year’s Mother’s Day rose from the DS’s. She’s a climber, and I’m training her up the arbor DH rebuilt. She is fragrant, and has the same scent used in classic rose scented hand creams.

@ Janet - vegetables can be just as beautiful as flowers, don’t you think?

@ jaileen - PEACHES!?!?

I finally got my rose bushes this spring. I planted five bushes with beautiful roses blooming in various colors and within two weeks, the deer had eaten every bloom and bud. We deer proofed the area with arches, gates and screens and the buds are back. Now we'll see if our attempt to deer proof worked.

JAileen, I want to try growing sugar snap peas next year!

Carla, your garden is beautiful!

Avicenna, and Barbara Diane, I hope you stay safe and cool, and I hope for relief for you soon. Heat and drought can be so brutal.

Helena and Nikki, I love the bunnies!

We have some hot and sunny weather alternating with heavy rain, so our deck container garden is going gangbusters.

1. The deck with containers (not enough sun in the rest of our yard, plus too many critters)
2. Tomatoes! Several plants are already producing fruit.
3. Beets
4. The first zucchini
5. Purple kale — we are already harvesting and enjoying that.

On to the non-veggie garden…
6. Day lilies are now blooming
7. Hydrangeas are starting to bloom but hubs used the wrong fertilizer so we are hoping to see more plentiful and vibrant blooms later this summer.
8 and 10. Hostas are blooming and this is a huge victory. The deer in our area have been destroying them and the hydrangeas every year, but my husband has been on a mission to raise our fences and keep the deer out of our yard. So far, so good.
9. Oak leaf hydrangeas are blooming.
11 and 14. The new seating area, stream, footbridge, and fish fountain that was my husband’s yard project this year. It’s even on a timer we can control with an iPhone app so we can turn the stream pump and lights on and off whenever we want to. Crazy!
12. Mahonia berries are plentiful.
13. I don’t know what these little purple-flowered grasses are (hubs bought them) but I love them.

No new pics of my garden. It’s going to be 113F today and plants and people are all in hunker down mode. I’m still trying to get one new watering line in for some plants that require extra water. @Carla you garden is lush! @JAileen wow I’m envious of your veggies. @Rachylou your neighbor, my word! Poisoning is dangerous to birds and other animals.

Carla your garden is so lovely! Those peonies will be stunning! Rachy and Jaileen, fab work on the veg!

No pictures for you (our small gardens are very simple), but my favourite story from our garden this year is the little bunny nest in one of our pool-side planters. We've been seeing hints of Mummy Bunny being up to something, and now have three tiny babies curled up in their nest under our geranium. We are doing our best not to disturb them but couldn't resist one little peek.

Now we are just keeping an eye to make sure Mum keeps showing up to feed them (laying a gridwork or yarn or grass in the day to see that it's been moved overnight). And putting up a "baby gate" (an assortment of pool floaties) around the side of the pool so if one jumps out of the nest, they don't fall in If Mum seems to disappear, we'll phone OSPCA to find out what to do for them, but in the meantime, we're trying our best to stay out of their way (as much as we can when the nest is right beside the couch and the pool). Poor bunnies ... I'm actually very worried about them hah!

We’ve been working in our vegetable garden lately. We had very chilly weather last week, with a frost warning, but luckily everything made it.

1. Peaches! We’ve planted a couple new trees last year and this year. Our old peach trees are 25 years old and are slowly dying. It’s hard to cut down a peach tree.

2. Tiny baby crookneck squash.
3. Tomatoes are just flowering. I hope they set some fruit before it gets hot again. The forecast is for 100 this Thursday. Most of them I started from seed.
4. Sugar snap and snow peas - they are so delicious. I planted three kinds in late February, and the flowers are different colors.
5. Green beans - I planted them a week ago and they came up yesterday. I cover them with nylon netting or the birds will eat them.

We’re lucky that we have plenty of space, but gardening here is challenging because of our short season, frosts that can crop up like last week, and extreme heat. And then there’s our dryness. Everything has to be irrigated. My husband has gotten very good at that over the years.

Our grass is all dry already. Our county is requesting a 40% cutback in water use, and I don't think it will be a request for much longer. And we already had cut back, as this is year 2. Our grass is dry, as is some of our landscaping. I'm hoping that when it finally rains they will come back, it took a long time, but they did revive last winter.
We do have lemons from our tree, which produces with very little help from us. I keep wanting to plant cherry tomatoes and basil, but not this year.

Thank goodness, Nikki, we don’t have rabbits. My back neighbor would try to kill them. As it is, I wonder if I should eat anything from my garden. She’s tried to poison the squirrels... !!

You know, that’s an excellent question! No! He left terrible, unamended clay soils! It’s quite a curiosity now that you mention it. Perhaps being a horticulturist, he just knew what to plant. I’m not entirely sure what he put in - for example the trees. Maybe they were already there when he moved in. But we have bay trees, a camellia and broom. He also left roses which the back neighbor is allergic to. I try to cut it away for her along the fence, but it’s tenacious!

In any case, the soil is getting better for veggies. Have been working on it more purposefully over the years now.
