My three-year old daughter always notices what I'm wearing and will often try to copy my outfits. It's pretty cute, especially since I'm not really that knowledgable about fashion. I think she's going to be very interested expressing herself through clothes and experimenting with fashion as she grows up.

I asked my son, now 14, how he would describe my style and he said "You're stylish for your age."

Um, thanks.

I think what he meant was that although I don't wear the same trends favored by eighth-grade girls, which is what he thinks of as being "in style," I do dress up a little more than most of the grown women we know.

I like this!!
My niece was thrilled when she found out that we now took the same size in shoes. She bowled through the front door asking where did I keep the good ones ( the dressy shoes ) I hide them in the top of the wardrobe, but that is no good any more she is 3 inches taller than me!!!

Do students count? lol I've had 10 year-old girls saying I looked so pretty today, 7-years old girls asking me what lipstick color had I applied on ('Did you painted your lips? Wooooow') and a 6-year old saying 'your boots look like mine!'. The 7 year-old actually had a sense of style, she would make dresses and skirts out of huge scarves and go about the room like that. Teenage girls also complimented me on shoes while teenage boys commented on how big my bags were. A whole group of nine children asked me once if my favorite color was red. When I said 'no, why? :S', they started pointing out how many red items I had (red schoolbag, red pencil-case, red folder, red pen, red converses, (maybe)red jumper... and I hadn't even noticed!). And once a 9-year old boy said I looked like a guy after getting a pixie cut lol Lately a 16 year old girl with body-issues said I looked so skinny and all and how fat she was (probably she's just my size but whatever) and she also asked me about bags, shoes and fashion trends, and took into account my opinion on her style. I was supposed to be teaching English...

Great thread!
I get quite a few comments, b/c I volunteer with many children and take care of a few part-time (none of my own yet). I usually get "I like..." or "that is pretty". My favorite was once I was wearing a dressy-casual outfit and a little girl shouted out "Oh, I love it... you look like Dora (the explorer)". Never been compared to a cartoon before.

Oh, I have something to share: Last Sunday, for Mother's Day, my daughter (14) prepared a fancy Prezi (sort of a new generation powerpoint with zooming text bits and pictures) for me, basically praising my qualities as a mom. One of the sequences was a collage of random women in mom's jeans and other style atrocities, followed by a collage of some of my outfit pictures, with the text: "Thank goodness you are so stylish!" This really made me smile!

What a great thread. My kids are a bit young to pay much attention to my clothes, but occasionally something will catch their eye. Today, in fact, my seven-year-old daughter exclaimed, "Oh! I like your coat!" when I picked her up from school in my black leather duster. She doesn't normally see me wearing this particular coat, because it's always bloody raining here, but today I got to wear it because it was cool and dry and I had to go downtown (which means I get to look a little classier than normal).

This is probably icky in all kinds of Oedipal ways, but my three-year-old son absolutely loves fishnet stockings, and comes up and caresses my legs whenever I wear them, while saying, "Mommy, I like your legs." I guess it starts early.

My 7 year old son doesn't notice much what I wear, but he loves to pick out my necklaces and earrings. He also loves it when I dress "like a girl", as he says - meaning flouncy dress and heels... a rare sight!

Great thread Ornela!!!!!
I very rarely wear dresses (mostly never but for 'dress' occasion) but have tried many on with my daughter around. She, as with my two sons will always say something really nice about how I look. Recently I have noticed that when she draws pictures of the family she always puts me in a dress--I love that she thinks of me that way!

There was at least one thread discussion about partners' perception of our styles and style journeys? But what do L=little people in your lives say? Children? Nieces and nephiews, cousins?

I guess the obvious style relationship is between mums and daughters and I'd be interested to hear what children of different ages think of their stylish mums.

I have a 4 yrs old son and he is actually the reason I started this thread Every now and then he'd come up with some hilarious comment. As there are no pre-amptied expectations he'll have any clue about the clothes, I find his spontaneous comments even funnier! Things range from "trapped legs" (wearing fishnets) to "I like that blouse" (my blue one, probably because it's his favorite color) to "that dress is very pretty!" to today's observation about my necklace that "looks like a crane". Is it just normal child's ability to notice and speak their mind uncensored, or I am actually around some great future style talent ;)

But seriously, those really are the best comments and best compliments, guaranteed to make me smile every time I think of them.

Want to share yours?
