Shiny....thank you for your excellent illustration (actually giggling at the cankles bit)....this is a very easy to understand explanation. Thanks for taking the time to reply with such a detailed response.

Ha ha, Mo beat me to a comedic response! I was going to say that skin provides structure by not allowing your internal organs to float around. :^)

In all seriousness, though, I have been confused on what "structure" means also. So I am glad you started this thread, because I now have a much better idea of what it means!

Imagine if you had ankles that were extremely shaped, well beyond any such labels such as "cankles" - as in, your ankles were wider in circumference than your thighs.

In such a case, you probably would not want to show off your ankles but a flare trouser might be your friend. Because the flare adds in structure, giving a deliberate and intentional leg shape to your thighs, while hiding away your ankles. You'd choose a flare that just skims your ankles and nobody would be the wiser.

Now apply the same principle but in reverse.

If the clothes you wear are intentionally baggier/looser because that is the trend, say boyfriend jeans, then cuffing to show off your ankles gives you structure. There is a normal leg underneath all this bagginess. Your baggy jeans are totally intentional. You're so okay with your legs, you can swathe them in bagginess. And yeah, the baggier your jeans, the slimmer and daintier your ankles are going to look, in comparison.

My legs and ankles aren't my issue but my tummy sure is (apple shape) so I learned this principle long ago: Loose flowing top, hides my midsection while baring my arms. My arms aren't that great and I wasted so many years trying to cover them up, but with this strategy they look pretty good in comparison.

I'm pretty literal minded so it took me a while to get my head around the whole 'structure' thing. It's not the first word that comes to mind when I look at outfits. But I got the hang of it after reading and looking along for a while. Imagine some of the same outfits with for example, a wide-armed blouse that goes all the way past the wrist. It becomes dowdier I think!

Yes, I think the idea is that it reveals the line of your frame.

I may be completely wrong, but I interpret "structure" in this sense as defining the line of the body (as opposed to unstructured fabrics where you have no idea where the body stops and starts. Skin, therefore, would be the ultimate structure;-)

Well, ain't nothing more bodycon than bare body parts, right? It's not skin so much as the shape of your arm, or leg, or whatever. You get the same effect with tights if you don't actually want to bare your skin.

Hello!

I really enjoy Inge's blogger spotlights and how she so expertly details the outfits and how they work.

In today's post, she mentioned how skin showing provides structure. I have noticed Angie and others noting the same thing....I just don't understand how it works?

So, how does showing bare arms or a part of the body provide structure to a look? Please help a clueless girl out!:)
