I've put on five pounds this year that don't look like they're going anyway anytime soon. So yesterday I tossed all my tight jeans and bought 3 new pairs in a bigger size. Viola. Lumps and bumps around my tummy disappeared. I think wearing clothes that are too tight are the main culprit here. Since I hate shape wear (I call it torture wear), I don't think there's anything wrong with trying a larger size or something flowly. Rethinking and accepting the positive bits (wow-I put on 5 pounds and now I have a bit of a booty!!) helps a lot.

If shapewear isn't your thing (is it anyone's?) then I say buy items with structure. The advice to wear flow-y things is fine, but you don't have to hide behind shapeless clothes. I think Stacy London used to say that a jacket is a girl's other best friend. A jacket hides belly and hip bumps for me, and makes a statement at the same time.

Also, I have had great luck with Spanx clothing. Not the shapewear, but the actual clothing, like skirts, tops, and dresses. They do the smoothing, but without the discomfort of traditional shapewear. Here is a link to their camis http://www.spanx.com/shapewear.....n_spx_cami and some cute leggings that don't look too "Spanxy" https://www.google.com/webhp?s.....p&

The only garments I wear that are even close to shapewear are Jockey Skimmies, which make my JJill knits slide and skim. I've tried wearing shapewear camisoles, but it's like using a flyswatter to shoot an elephant and they feel uncomfortable and make me continuously self-conscious, so I don't, anymore. I think this is an issue for a thinner and less jiggly woman than me, mostly. I did meet a new colleague yesterday who's about my age, probably about my size (taller, though) and she had on an ill-fitting suit and probably pantyhose and shapewear, and she just looked uncomfortable, to me. I think that when you are a certain size it's almost more attractive to dress in comfortably-sized clothes that camouflage with pattern and texture, instead of trying to fit into something very tailored.

Cut, cling management, and cammo. Also? A bra that fits right, keeps my boobs on the front of my body without letting them brush my arms, and undies that don't create any lines.

A top that is straight, skims my squashy bits and hits at or above my happy place (on me, about the level of my pelvic bone or right where my legs join my torso at the highest point, which, given that I have a short torso, are spots very close to each other). A top that is slightly A-line. A long necklace, a flattering neckline, a good armhole. Bottoms that come up higher. I almost never buy petite pants, I buy regular ones and hem them, to get the extra bit of rise because it is more flattering to my middle. I have some magic ponte leggings with a three inch wide textured elastic band, and I would cheerfully clone them.

Today I have on a tucked top (generally not a tucker) with a blazer over it. The blazer is cammo for the squishy bits, which because of the structure of the jacket, it skims over. A longer cardigan or jacket over an untucked but somewhat more fitted inner layer is also flattering. I am a sleeve pusher-upper or roller, which visually subtracts my arms from my middle and makes me look slimmer.

I don't care much for shapewear. My preference is to avoid skintight garments. I like positive ease, meaning the garment circumference is larger than body circumference (I like 2-3", your preference may be different). That way nothing clings and the fabric skims the body flatteringly. For bottoms, nothing beats wovens.

Chiming back in to also say ditto to what Jenava said. I'm trying to retrain my eye to look at the entirety of the look, rather than focusing on the "imperfections". When I see someone else, I don't immediately check their stomach for rolls, why do I think this is the proper way to asses myself? I do think there are times when a bubble or bump kind of wrecks the lines of an outfit, but I also think there are times when clingier shirt adds to the outfit, even if the price of that is a visible bump somewhere.

I'm also finally accepting that some skin at the neckline really does bring the focus up away from my middle. Not cleavage, mind you, just the few inches below my collarbone. I've been fighting against v-necks being "my neckline" for years now, but they really are far more flattering on me than crew necks.

i dont wear constricting shape wear, but like a light shaping cami....it tames instead of squishes the lumps and bumps, and makes what goes on top smoother.

I like shapewear in cool/cold weather. My favorite piece for smoothing is the type below in finds with a deep open neckline that does not flatten the chest. These are available in different brands from Walmart on up and usually in nude and black. I usually take an XS or S top but buy these in a large just to smooth. I also find that my back is supported. These also come as a body suit with legs but that style does not give easy access for insulin injections and would be a problem in the restroom. Otherwise they would work smoothing out hips and more.

Otherwise I do creative layering and try to avoid knits in favor of woven fabrics, especially any knits that are fitted across the abdomen. wovens tend to smooth things or float/stand away from the body. I am 70 and have had a couple of C-sections and some other abdominal surgery .

I used to love shapewear. Still do. But over the last two years, I got over being sensitive about the wobble. Also, clothes hang better because the wobble is distributed in an anatomically correct way unlike shapewear.

I do a mix of all these strategies but am a fan of shapewear (I think one of the few on the forum). I have a black body suit with a builtd in bra and a pair of beige "suck em in" pants that come up to the bra and down to the knee. I wear either of these for special occasions and mostly find them successful in smoothing out my waist and hips- I find they are relatively comfortable too except when it is really hot. The first is relatively attractive - the second really is not but it makes me feel better in a fitted sheath type dress!!

For daywear I mostly wear either a fitted camisole or bodysuit, or I choose skimming rather than clinging.

It has to do with the way the fabric is created. The threads of a knit fabric are, well- knitted together and have a natural stretch due to construction. Wovens are made from threads that are laid out in one direction and woven through the other direction. It is a more stable structure, but can also have stretch if they include things like Lycra. Either fabric can be thick or thin, and cut in many ways.
I am another who doesn't wear shape wear, but more woven fabrics and looser cuts.

The short answer is knit is like tshirt or sweater material, woven is like a men's dress shirt or denim.

I don't wear things that are clingy without wearing a very fitted, stretchy and thick camisole underneath. This does not hide the rolls, but it does make them less "squishy" and so my fitted tops fit better.

I also tend to wear more high-waisted bottoms with cropped and boxy tops (can be an issue as I am large chested, so the fabric either has to collapse against my body or not be too boxy and have a v-neck) that can be worn untucked. If I tuck I wear a woven, often in a drapey fabric. Shirts with slits on the sides worn untucked work well as well to give shape but avoid cling.

But mostly I just try to get over my own fear of imperfection. If I think I look nice in something then I just wear it, muffin top be damned.

I find that wovens add a lot of lbs. to my body. I also hate ironing. The blouse I have on today is a cross between a woven and a knit, I guess. It's not clingy.

I'm a fan of fit-and-flare dresses. I also love my wrap dresses.

I too agree on the switch to woven fabrics for tops. The added bonus is that for me they also seem to wear much better than knits. I'm not a fan of shapewear either but a simple cami in a silky fabric adds a bit of smoothing while helping clothes drape properly.

I'm with Traci on wearing more wovens. No shapewear for me, but body-skimming camisoles (sometimes slips) most days. I'm not really concerned about concealing my body; I'm just trying to get my clothes to hang properly.

Making the switch from knits to woven made the biggest difference for me. It's not without a cost, though. Knits are much more forgiving fit wise because they can stretch a little here or there, while wovens need to be tailored to the parts they should fit. Darts need to hit the right spots, misfit in the shoulders becomes more painfully obvious, etc.

Woven tops can also be an adjustment for the eye. You lose the cling on the bulges, but you also lose the fit in some of the thinner areas, like below the bustline. Somewhat fitted jackets over tops that flow from the lumps can help.

Fit and flare dresses can also be wonderful for lumpy middles.

Wide waist bands, no tucking (or semi tucking), and fabric... heavier stretch fabrics, fabrics without stretchiness or 'cling'... those are my tricks.

I think there are two strategies: 1) Wear items that are loose over the bulgey parts, as suggested above or 2) Shapewear. Shapewear doesn't have to be actual shape wear IMO--something like SPANX really holds you in and feels constricting, but you can size up in it to make it a bit more comfy. Alternatively, just wear a camisole with some spandex that holds you in a bit but is much less restrictive. I have one like this that I wear under thin tee shirts and tuck into my pants that smooths a bit but feels just find. I think it's hit or miss with finding the right level of hold that works for you. Check the intimates section of TJ Maxx, Marshalls etc.--they have discounted tanks that you can try out without a big investment.

PS Strategy 3) Embrace your bulgy bits. They are much more noticeable to you than to anyone else! And you earned those bits!

The outfit looks nice Betty I can't wear belts to short in the body although I loved the hip belts years ago. Bought some tops that flow or glide over the lumps and they definitely help use the Cali under tops a lot to

I can't stand shapewear. I still remember my mother's glee at throwing away her girdle.

I wear clothes that glide a bit over my body rather than tighter clothes.

I remember someone said a thin camisole or slip helps a bit.

I'm 55 and have had 4 children as well. Three of them were c-section. I try to wear tops that drape over my abs. If you look at the WIW I posted just now, I'm wearing a button-down shirt with a belt. The fabric below the belt floats away from my abs.

Shapewear down't work for me, either. If a garment doesn't look good without shapewear, I don't buy it or wear it.

Hi I've had four children and hit the over 40 mark and now have a rather unsightly rolls especially when sitting plus the usual love handles etc. Has anyone found little tricks to hide these but in a comfortable way I've tried shape wear myself and it OK while you are standing but once you try and sit you get bits poking out at all kinds of strange angles I'm fairly straight up and down anyway so would line to look like. I've done form of shape outger then squishy middle
