You are all wonderful, thank you so much! I took my blazer shopping and bought a lovely oversized coat with some structure. Yay! Thank you again.

I would normally buy one size up in a structured coat for my business wardrobe. And when shopping I'd definitely wear a blazer so you can ensure proper fit.

I would suggest wearing a blazer when shopping. Don't worry if the coat looks sporty. Fellow commuters will understand. The people above you will notice that you showed up. (I used to commute on the bus too.) I held out for coats that were a good color for me and were long enough to cover my behind. I had good luck finding a warm winter coat at the Columbia outlet store.

When I wore a blazer regularly, I bought coats with a one piece (not set-in) or dolman sleeve. The rest of the cut would be as sleek as you prefer, but the shoulder has extra room. Below is one I bought on eBay; a dressy wool/alpaca blend, but comfortable over a jacket.

As far as wool coats (not puffers) go, dolman sleeves are much easier to layer blazers under. If the cost has really structured shoulders and narrow sleeves, it’s almost hopeless, as you have found.

What kkards said! And a cocoon shaped coat is a great silhouette for this type of layering.

Bring your blazer with you when shopping and pick something that layers over it. I found Brooks Brothers worked well. More fashionable brands can be more hit and miss, as they shift their cuts around.

It can be hard to find a winter coat that looks professional and is still warm and roomy enough to fit over professional clothes. Sizing up doesn't always work. I found this long down puffer from the Babaton grouping at Aritzia, on sale in December. It fits over my blazers and bulky sweaters. It's water resistant, has YKK zipper, and has cloth on the outside and quilting on the interior so it looks more professional to my eye. I also like it because it doesn't weigh as much as other long coats I have had in the past.

I believe Angie has also suggested cape style coats and or Kimono sleeves to wear over bulky items. I have not been able to make them work in my climate. The key seems to be the fit at the join between shoulder and sleeve so definitely try them on with the most bulky item you anticipate wearing underneath in the future.

If you have been looking, my personal experience has been that I have had a similar previous coat from Canada Goose Coat that did not work well for me over bulky items and the same is true of slightly shorter coats from North Face, and Eddie Bauer. I have a J Crew wool coat with thinsulate and it does fit over bulky items.

I just buy a coat with enough room to layer under. Growing up in the northeast of the US, you always tried on a winter coat with at least a warm sweater underneath to insure the proper fit. A good coat will be designed/constructed to be layered

Hello YLF community, my legal job requires me to wear a blazer which is fine most of the year. However in winter, I desperately need a coat for the bus commute. However do I layer one over my blazer while still looking stylish and not looking larger than I need to. Any tips would be wonderful! Thank you!
