LauraG, really wise words. I hadn’t really connected those dots before, but actually my style wordscould also be used to describe other areas of my life.

And Angie, of course, thank you for the reminder that each of us enjoys this process differently. Some like making “finds,” some like making spreadsheets, some take pics and some write descriptions- this is all supposed to be fun!

Hmm, another person who tends to wear things who feels they aren’t who she really is. I still don’t “get” how that happens, but am becoming aware that it’s more common than I realize. I mentioned recently that I have at times felt I “should” like something that did t feel really comfortable. For me, that feeling is enough, and I don’t want to wear it.

I like this, Laura: “if you dig deep and come up with words that describe who you really are, not just how you want to look, well, those are powerful words. When you know who/what you really are, well, you want to *be* that, all the time.”

There is agency in being who you are all the way through, and there are a lot of things that get in the way of that. Although it seems you shouldn’t have to do anything to simply be - you are already who you are after all - it’s the human condition to have to fight your way clear.

Also this: Ohmigosh. Someone once threw down this 2000 page book on my desk, big academic tome, about how categorisation is THE mechanism of thought and knowledge. They did it because, I’m sure, me and my brother are probably the only people in the world who’d read it for fun, lol. Anyways, interesting things come out in the describing of things...

Great question, jessikams.

I think the answer is hidden in the part you skipped over ("once you've figured out your 'style descriptors'..."). What I mean is, if you dig deep and come up with words that describe who you really are, not just how you want to look, well, those are powerful words. When you know who/what you really are, well, you want to *be* that, all the time. It goes a lot deeper than just using the words when you shop or dress, though of course that happens.

There are no neutral clothes. Everything communicates, and if your clothes aren't communicating who you are, then they're communicating who you aren't. Even to yourself. When I dress like me, I feel happy, and when I wear perfectly acceptable clothes that don't look like me, I feel invisible.

I have a default style (old-school ladylike) that looks good, but is at odds with who I really am. Like Rachylou, I find that persona amounts to false advertising--it attracts people looking for something quite other than my unconventional, earthy self. You can find yourself being devalued all the time by others, if your clothing is attracting the wrong others.

I want to add that it's FUN for me - (maybe not you) - to have a Style Moniker and Style Descriptors - (as well as the fact that it personally keeps me focused). It becomes intuitive after a while too.

Some people enjoy counting wears and having elaborate spreadsheets of their wardrobe items precisely because it's fun for them (and keeps them focused/organized). I don't want to count my wears, nor do I want to create spreadsheets when my entire wardrobe is beautifully documented in FINDS. But I totally get that others do, and respect the fun-factor and what works for them.

Horses for courses. Always.

Taylor, that sounds a lot like how I’ve always shopped. With the exception of when I put on a bunch of weight for a couple years, I’ve generally been able to tell what things, on the hanger, will work for me.

RL and Carla, interesting that you both see this as a shortcut. To me it sounds like way too much thinking, and too much homework, finding a celeb whose style I like? Tearing pix out of magazines? A Pinterest board? Remembering it all (most people seem to have a longer explanation for their short & snappy moniker) when I’m considering buying something? Ugh, no thank you. Much simpler to shake my head and put things back, even if I can’t enunciate what I don’t like. (I am, however, learning a bit of fashion vocab here, and was glad to I could communicate what I didn’t like about various boots while shopping with Inge recently, even though I didn’t have a mantra.)

First of all, Rachylou, thank you for bringing Neil Gaiman into the conversation- London Below, it is!

Second: WOW, all these meaty and thoughtful responses! Much more “philosophy of life” and not so much “how many necklaces should I wear at one time?”

At this stage, for me, style descriptors serve to keep me on track when shopping OR just getting dressed because I have a hungry and democratic eye- I love to LOOK at everything! But I don’t look good in everything (baby blue, please stand up)— and I don’t FEEL right in everything (pleated skirts, I’m talking to you...). So the style descriptors can help me discern what feels off about an outfit, and learn and evolve.

Before working with a moniker and style descriptors, I had 'personas' for different occaisions based on the way I thought I should look. My closet held mostly complete outfits specific to the events or activities. I felt appropriately dressed for the occaisions, but I sometimes felt like I was in costume and not authentic to my 'brand' (thank you Kkards!)

It took me a while to get with Angie's program. I did struggle with my moniker. Forum members helped. I've used Acedemichic (thanks to Racheylou - loved that one!), and both Elegant Tomboy and Happy Tomboy (from Angie).

Now I shop with my moniker and descriptors in mind, and I'm able to make outfits by visualizing what a Tomboy might wear for such-and-such an occaision. I also keep a journal, tear pictures from magazines, and maintain a couple of Pinterest boards. Really, I don't even have to think about it because most of my items already fit my descriptors. If/when I have a garment I'm struggling with, I ask myself is it outside my fashion persona or am I due for a shift?

For ME the moniker and descriptors are a tool that works because I DO want to feel authentic, and a consistent style facilitates this, and a high happiness factor.

Taylor, I think different “guides” work for different people. Some find a two-word descriptor invaluable, some want guide words, while others choose celebrities or public figures as inspiration. Visual stimulation, intuition, images, personas, style guides like Kibbe, the list of possibilities is probably as diverse as are people. And, I suspect, many of us use more than a single “guide” as an way of sorting out what works and what doesn’t.

On a side note, comments like “It’s just clothes” and “I just wear what I like” gets a lot more complex once you start thinking about why we choose what we choose... Like it or not, our clothes are one of the most obvious ways we send cues to others about our gender, age, occupation, affiliations, culture, social class, interests, and on and on. And clothes are powerful way to let others know something about who I am before we even speak to each other. Clothing can build bridges between people—or create barriers. It can help people figure out how to approach me, or can make them cross the street to avoid me. Style is fun, but it is serious stuff when you see the misinterpretations and negative interactions based on nothing more than a head scarf or skirt length.

This is a really interesting conversation and made me think !

I don’t think I have a “style moniker” I relate back to as I shop. Nor do I check things off in my head before I purchase . I do however check for quality . Although I have a definite style and I can find words to describe my style (is that fashion persona)? Is that different than Moniker ? I think I may be confused !
I think it is more visual for me rather than intellectual when shopping my style . I am intuitively /visually drawn to certain items , colors, and shiloetts, without any thought .
I can quickly scan a couple of racks and even eliminate entire stores or sections of stores just by the vibe it gives as “definitely not me”. But it’s interesting that if I see something that I know “is me” I instantly know it !
Part of the impulse shopper in me I guess .

Gaylene, yes, makes it much more simple to sort through everything out there. And so true about things that look good on but aren’t really *you* - so easy to buy in the moment because of that, and then they fail to satisfy.

LP - Right? Right. There’s something about preppy style. It doesn’t like to let go of a person, lol.

FashIntern - I think the thing about having a fashion persona, for me, is that it enables me to think less. It’s a memory trick for me. I like to think about fashion but not about what I’m wearing. Then I get a glimpse of my thoughtlessness...

LP, it took me years to cultivate that kind of alienation from my home town culture, lol. I mean, growing up I was always a bit of an outsider and a freak, but it still stunned me the first time a student at a directional u (as in “SW State”) pfiffed at me and muttered something about big city elites. Could that have been addressed sartorially? Perhaps partially.

I commented to Krishna recently that she could evaluate the appropriateness of a dress for teaching by thinking of the persona who would wear it, then trying to picture that person teaching. Maybe I should’ve followed my own advice and worn things that would fit in (I didn’t like jeans even in middle school) and then let the persona the outfits called up take control. I can see how a style moniker could guide that process.

But do people think constantly about the persona they want to project? I can definitely understand wanting to do that at work and in certain other roles (anything I am at as a parent, or representing an organization). But for me, that isn’t most of life.

Most of the time I just am, and the only character trait I want to be sure to present is “not absolutely stark raving mad/still has a trace of sanity in there”. That’s a pretty low bar, especially for someone who looks like she’s from the German-settled Midwest (my parents are), as long as most places privilege that. I know that many of my black friends have a much stronger sense of needing to be presentable when they go out, and my son is developing that too, now that he is, in his words, “a large black man”. But that’s a discussion for another day, style for survival.

I’ve never been able to come up with a catchy moniker, but I’ve come to realize I do have a very definite style. For me, it’s easiest to think of my style as a couple of personas: By day, a woman wearing highly polished boots; straight-legged pants; neutral-colored, polo-neck cashmere sweaters; and a vintage tan duffle, or olive Barbour, or tweedy riding jacket who strides when she walks; and, by night, a dramatic diva in “Le Smoking” or a black architectural gown with a deep décolletage.

Having these two images grounds my style since, if contemplating a purchase, I just ask myself if either of these two personas would wear the item in question. Their thumbs down help me walk by piles of trendy jeans, boho blouses, “pretty” floral print dresses, and lady-like handbags. Even if these items looked good on me, to paraphrase Rachylou, the message these items would be sending would be incongruent with my personality and my sense of self. Having these two personas as my style mavens keep me feeling like me in my clothes.

Oh geez Rachy, I know exactly what you mean. My best friend from college assumed I was a flatlander, a Snob from Manhattan, for weeks after we met. He was shocked to learn that we'd both grown up in the same kind of farm town about an hour apart from each other in northern Vermont. For the longest time I only knew how to dress High Prep; it was just my default for "nice" clothes. It still takes some thinking to not look too classic.

Lol. Maybe I just date slow people. Lol.

But yes, that's a fine way to put it: My moniker was aspirational and I've used the phrase to match my clothing to who I really am.

I mean obviously, I've got a crazy streak a mile wide and it would make appearances. But I needed/need it to be really more upfront. I guess the thing is, I'm attracted to preppy and it's a habit and I also look really bad in it. It creeps up on me if I don't pay attention, misleads people and wreaks havoc on outfits.

Haha. I'm so crazy!

I understand that much about you already. I’m trying to figure out how it connects to style monikers. Are you saying that your moniker was aspirational at first, describing a change you wanted to make, because you used to dress like a straight-up prepster, so people expected you to behave like one, and you’ve used that phrase to guide your appearance’s transition to match who you really are?

FashIntern - Well, let’s put it this way, I'm preppy because my people are preppy. And sure, I’ll ride out with a thermos of vodka boullion to meet the guys who’ve spent the morning wallowing in the cold and wet, as preppies like to do. I’ll wear a hacking jacket THEN. But I’d rather stab myself with a fork than have people come and mow my lawn and blow leaves with a leaf blower every week. I’m not afraid of a homeless person who gets down on the ground crying to hug Lilypup. If they want that company, Lilypup and I are happy to keep company awhile. I’m really more a London Below person than a London Above person.

But in the past, I feel like many people have received a nasty surprise to discover this. Esp in the dating department, lol. I will never own a gym or country club membership. NEVER. Lololo!

It took me a long time to come up with a moniker after I found YLF. Partly because I really had a firm grasp of my aesthetic and lifestyle, and what worked for me and what didn't work. Even now, though I have it and am very happy with it (Duchess Next Door), I don't do a good job of keeping it in mind when shopping. I definitely don't use it when putting outfits together, because I know what works and what I won't do. (I think that means that I am happy with my style and don't have goals I'm trying to reach.)

That said, I do remember keeping my moniker in mind when I was dress browsing at a clearance center a while ago. I am drawn to boho looks, since I love the feel of it, and the pretty, flowing details and fabrics; but it is a very bad match for my style and life. So the "duchess" part of my moniker helped, because that kind of laid-back formless boho doesn't fit at all. On the flip side, I love dressing up fancy, and I could do pretty slick and sharp with vintage hats and gloves and tailored suits and dresses. But that doesn't fit the "next door" part of my style, which is necessary for my life not as an actual Duchess.

Thinking back over my month of WIW during the September tracking challenge... I think maybe this "duchess next door" is even closer than I realized. Because my sloppiest - short denim shorts and a graphic t-shirt - I still have some makeup, my hair done, and some jewelry on. That's just part of me, to be put together on that level. Duchess off duty and maybe digging rocks out of the yard, but still a duchess.

I don't know if I really use a specific style moniker but I've noticed lately that "minimal, polished, everyday casual" has been what I think when I look at my outfit and before I make a purchase - and that's what I seem to require to make myself happy. The "polish" for me is hair done, makeup (minimal but there), good shoes, nice belt if I'm wearing one, and typically a small pendant necklace that goes with the belt hardware.

This Style Moniker excersise always seemed too advanced for me and I never conjured one. I just never knew how to use it if I had it. I know what I like but I can’t really put it into words or recognize if it fits some moniker description. I am not very visual person probably. But I hope I can learn more from this thread and eventually come up with one for myself.

This is such a great question. My ‘first’ moniker, I paid - yes paid - for someone to come up with it for me. It was Contemporary Beauty. I couldn’t use it at all. It’s too intellectual. It’s about the way I think and what I think about, not the visual results or how I feel.

Angie then came up with Quirky Waif for me, and that has stuck. It encapsulates how I feel and says something about the visual. And there’s room there to play and evolve.

I use it to shop and to create outfits - not daily, tho, because I’ve developed a sort of uniform. Anyways, I get lost shopping. And I also get distracted. The moniker helps me stay on track and not waste time and money.

And I feel it’s important to have a consistent and true message. That was a big goal for me coming to YLF. I really felt what I was wearing, the style wandering, Misled people...

Jessikams - I find my descriptors are super helpful in avoiding mistakes. They re most useful for purchasing. Once something is "right" then it's about mood, activity, appropriate, weather my wardrobe mixes and matches. I have several level of descriptors. My most helpful one is I am a P-POD. Professional Princess of Darkness. As a physician I enjoy very formal, polished professional clothing. Blazers, minimalist, black/gray primarily. Princess because I have a very ladylike dressy formal style. But like Bijou, too ladylike reads old lady. I need a hard edge to my style with tough footwear and sharp minimalist pieces to balance. My other words are "enduring classic" again, elegant, classic, refined, polished but the ability to endure is central to who I am. Things that have a patina of life, the weathered leather jacket, pieces that have been around forever - cowboy boots, jeans to frock coats and tuxedo dressing - quality, provenance, history. My wardrobe centers on the 5B's - blazers, bob, black, belts, booties. And my style mantra is classic, elegant, timeless, understated and unique. When a try something on I ask myself does a PPOD wear this? I enjoy many looks but I know what makes me happy, if I stay on track with who I am at the core than it's money well spent. On a daily basis, if I bought the right things I don't think about my moniker. My clothes are me. I just need to enjoy them!!
