If you can find Marc Jacobs, they have a super skinny version of their gel pencil that is particularly good for tight lining. It isn't as good of a value (product amount for the $) compared to the bigger gel pencil, but it is super awesome easy to use for tight lining. It is this one: http://www.sephora.com/finelin.....&om_m

I've found the kat von d liner bothers my eyes if it gets anywhere near them. I love it for regular lining, but not tight-lining or water-lining. I use bobbi brown gel liner with a stiff, flat brush for tight-lining, but make sure you do NOT get the one with metallic flecks in it; I made that mistake and the flecks come off in my eyes and irritate them. My dream is to get a tattoo'd tightlight. (-:

In the case of the LM cake liner, I have found that what works for me is to be sure the application is not too wet. I test it by dabbing the brush on the back of my hand first. Then it is important to aim for the base of the eye lashes but to avoid the waterline. Requires a good tilted mirror that you can ideally sit with, which I never do because I am constantly harassed by small children, ahem. I gave it a shot once a day until I got the experience how to get it to work for me. I also was shown once by the make up artist how to do it when I bought the liner and watched a couple of youtube videos. Most helpful was having someone do it for me once.

The LM counter had a real makeup artist, as opposed to a sales associate, but she is only there certain hours, so it might pay to find out about that ahead of time.

For regular eyeliner I like the waterproof pencils from Chanel, but I find them not soft enough for tightlining. I have no experience with gel or liquid, but for a not very talented makeup applier such as myself, I find a brush and cake liner to be relatively forgiving.

JP , thanks for the advise! I appreciate it. Unfortunately this doesn't work well for me. Might be bc of my east asian eyes. Or another reason. I've decided to go to a make-up store that I trust and ask for updates on products and advise. As a reference, I'll keep in mind the comments here. Not sure they have LM, KVD or Marc Jacobs, but they do have Bobby Brown, Chanel and a variety of other European brands in different price range.

My vote is for Bobbi Brown's gel liner - it has great staying power, and you apply it with a brush.

But a quicker (and cheaper!) solution that might be available in your makeup bag right now: Apply a little bit of matching eyeshadow on top of any liner you currently own with a flat eyeshadow brush. Similar to Gigi's suggestion to apply powder under the eyes, it "sets" the makeup and makes it less prone to smudging. Makeup is less likely to migrate onto or off of drier surfaces.

Thank you, ladies! I need to update myself on this subject. Never tried a gel liner. The felt tip liner sounds interesting, too. I use Sensai liquid liner over my eyelashes and Sensai marcara. I've always tried pencil eyeliners for tightlining (looks smashing for 2 minutes, lol), but think I have to dig into this and try out different products. I know «makeup technology» has evolved a lot lately. A new fun style aspect to focus on.

I know others favour the LM powder liner , but I use ( and with great success) either a Chanel felt tip or a Kat Von D felt tip . KVD is not tested on animals , in case that's of interest to you . I've been doing this daily for years - no smudging and no irritation .

I haven't often done tightlining, but I can have a problem with mascara smudging under the eyes. What has been helping lately is using a concealer brush to apply some loose translucent powder right under the eye. That seems to repel anything that wants to rub off there.

In my experience, a lot depends on the eyeliner. Stila and Marc Jacobs (my fave) all make good gel pens for tightlining. Laura Mercier and Trish McEvoy make great powder ones that you apply with a brush. And Kat VonD makes a fantastic liquid eyeliner, but I've only had limited success using it for true tightlining because you have to really poke the tip into your eyelashes if you use a liquid eyeliner. Also, you have to make sure to get whatever product you use tight into your lash line, not into your waterline, otherwise it will move around.

Scarlets post spured this question. I love tightlining, but always ends up looking like a raccoon/panda within 5 minutes. The eyeliner rubs off when I blink. And since I can't stop blinking, do you have any suggestions for how to sove this?

Over the years I've tried eyeliners from Mac, Chanel, YSL, Lancome, L'Oreal, etc, etc. I always end up with eyeliner on my eyelids and under my eyes. Great for many Halloween-looks, but not for everday life.
