I have a lot, no, A LOT of shoes. Half are usually stored away (seasonal), and the other half are on closet shelves. My 'normal' shoes are open and easy to see, but my 'stupid expensive' shoes are kept in their original boxes.

I downloaded an iPhone app for documenting your wardrobe. Of course, I have not started and probably never will, but I like the idea. I don't have the space for everything to be visible and easy-access.

What I really do is think of and store everything by categories - work shoes, shoes with a heel, high heel shoes, boots, flats, casual walk-around shoes, summer shoes. It's easier for me to remember what I have, grouped that way.

Wow.. there are some great shoe displays here.
I am probably the only one here who does this, but I keep all my shoes in their original box. I think I irrationally believe that this keeps them newer looking. And I only own 16 pair of day wear shoes (not sport) so it's pretty easy to scan the collection of boxes and look inside with x-ray vision in order to choose the day's shoes.
The picture shows the shelf that I store the current seasons shoes on... Being winter, the box on the left is a pair of boots, the shelf holds the rest of my winter collection, and the stack to the right is my summer collection. Come summer, the summer shoes will take residence on the shelves.
Works for me!

Mine are on a rack and on the floor of my closet, all visible. Ideally I'd get another rack to stack on the one that's there to free up some floor room though, the ones on the floor get dusty

Three years ago we redecorated our bedroom and expanded and fitted my closet with shelves and all kinds of lovely storage amenities. Having my shoes and boots on display all the time helps me remember what I have and makes it easier to get dressed. I do put away summery shoes (like flip flops) during the winter, and likewise stash most of my boots up high during the summer. During boot season, a lot of my boots end up on the floor (see photo #2), where I can get to them easily.

There is some built in shelving in our closet. The boots get stored standing on the floor under the lowest shelf. The shoes get stored on two shelves above. A few pairs are in boxes and stacked. The rest are just sitting on the shelf.

The pair of shoes I'm currently wearing (5 days/week) are on the shoe rack by the door. Gear shoes are in the front coat closet.

I've never found a space efficient way to store shoes. If the shoes are small enough to fit inside a shoe box, then I'm wasting the extra space inside the box.

Also, what do you do with shoe dustbags?

Ugh, my shoe storage is not great. A series of racks in the bottom of my closet, with boots standing in front in the cooler months. I do switch out summer and winter shoe collections. I have way too many is part of the problem (and another pair just arrived today, the SW Cadets!). The racks on the floor are hard to see underneath the hanging clothing. I so want a closet renovation!!

I don't have great storage for my shoes, but I find that keeping a photo log helps abundantly, especially since I'm an online shopper. I don't even have to get up, just click on iPhoto and peruse my collection, look over how I've worn the items, and see if there's anything I wish was different.

I rigged together, and then painted, this shoe storage unit using extensions for some heavy duty storage shelves from Ikea. It's under the big window in the living room, by the front door. It can double as a bench, can be covered by the big curtains, and keeps everything organized and handy!

Interestingly enough, this picture was taken not quite two years ago, and my shoe collection is quite different now!

I live in a four season climate, too, so store summer shoes (sandals) away in winter, and boots in the summer.

I have a very small shoe collection. For winter, I have 3 pair of boots (one of which is mainly a gear boot, so I keep it down in the basement closet), 1 bootie, 2 dressy-casual heels, one dressy pump, and one lower heeled shoe. So they all fit on a metal rack sort of like the one in Mo's picture. My slippers and gear shoes go on the floor.

Not terribly helpful to you, I know!

But I have seen cloth hangers for shoes. Would something like this help?

I have a tiered rack at the bottom of my closet. The flat sandals I store in an open shoebox, like file folders, toes up, and the rest of my shoes I try and squeeze into the last of the square footage on the closet floor!
Here's a mix of FL and Tahoe since they are separated right now. In the FL pic you can see the ballet flats and thongs upended in their open boxes.

I live in a 4 season climate and end up putting my sandals away in winter and boots away in summer. My most frequently worn shoes for the season go out on a shelf in my closet, the boots get lined up on the floor so they are visible. Pumps stay out year round but don't really get worn as much as everything else. Dressy dress shoes live in their boxes year round.

I have a walk in closet I share with hubby. My shoes are on a metal shoe rack so I can see them out in the open underneath my clothes on the clothing rod. The off season shoes go in the original boxes on the top shelf of the closet. Some shoes stay out year round, such as ballet flats, but boots and sandals are packed up or displayed based on season. Hubby's shoes are in the coat closet since he has a smaller shoe collection, his fit on a metal rack in the closet.

I think part of my shopping issues - too much stuff, see other threads - is that I can't *see* everything I own with my current storage. Out of sight = out of mind = new purchases!

I'm making a real effort to display them in my very, very small front closet, which I share with my husband and daughter and our coats. That way I can instantly gauge the worthiness of any new piece, because another pair is going to HAVE to go. There's no room!

Of course, my summer shoes are back in my no-see-um storage, a set of bins with drawers. Thinking of taking pics of each drawer to remind me EXACTLY how many shoes I already own!

How do you store your shoes to keep them in your mind's eye?
