For many of my earrings I use the method christy posted. For things like rings and brooches (of which I have many) I use 2 antique printers type boxes that I hung on the wall. I like to be able to see them.

Interesting to see all the different approaches. I always admire creative solutions that display as well as store, but I'm really anal about having everything in closed or hidden storage -- my husband and i are dedicated to having no visible "clutter" in our bedroom (no TV allowed!).

Hi Running Sue --

I'm very Goldilocks about my jewelry storage. I don't like to hang necklaces because then the display looks busy to me (and I hate having to dig through multiple necklaces to get to the one I want). Yet I like to have things visible, because otherwise I forget they're an option.

If I lived a catalogue life, I'd display items like Photo #1.

In reality, I display as in #2-3. The bookcase is right in my bedroom so I can't help but see my options whenever I'm dressing.

[I keep thinking I'll find different boxes, but haven't made any progress in several years -- and hey, the cardboard kind of fits in....]

I have far too much jewellery that I rarely wear, but at least it is more or less organized! This is how I have things arranged at the moment. The rack on the wall is from Ikea, and meant to be used in the kitchen. I don't think this particular version is available anymore but the basic idea of a rail with some metal s-hooks still is. The cheap-o metal mug tree is good because the arms can be easily bent to allow longer things to hang free. The jewellery box was a gift from my in-laws a few years ago. Sentimental items that I never wear, like rock band pin badges and miscellaneous clip-on earrings that belonged to my grandmother, are in the bottom tray.

I have a wooden jewellery box with a glass lid. It has divided, felt-lined compartments that I put my earrings in. I've had it since I was a little girl -- no idea where to buy one now.

I also avoid collecting too much jewellery -- that helps! I store my most important pieces on my own body, and when I take them off a night I put them in a little dish on my bedside table.

Nothing beats a good jewelry box for me. One with plenty of drawers and compartments with felt-lined drawers, and everything is visible at a glance. If you have nough to render jewelry boxes too small, machinists chests are an excellent and beautiful alternative. Just be careful not to hang pearls or beaded necklaces, as their silk or cord can stretch, and sterling silver pieces are better kept in felt pouches to help keep tarnish away.

I don't like to hang my jewelry because it collects dust... I bought a size XL fabric jewelry travel sack, handmade from an Etsy seller, and I love it for storing necklaces and bracelets. Earrings I keep in tiny ziplock plastic baggies, so that the mates don't get separated, and just toss them all in a metal tin. I dump out the tin or dig through it when I'm looking for earrings, but it works since the earrings stay clean and together.

I have acrylic holders hanging on a wall of my closet that hold my watches and most of my bracelets and necklaces. Thinner necklaces (chains) are hanging from thumbtacks inside one of the shelves. On that same shelf is a set of stacking trays that I use to hold my rings (top tray), earrings (2nd tray), pendants/enhancers (3rd tray) and a few larger bracelets are in the bottom tray.

I got the holders at the Container Store. I love being able to see so much at once. I started with 2 and later added 2 more. I'll post a picture when I'm home.

I hfave 9 or so drawers below my bathroom counter, and that's the area where I put on the final touches, so I devoted a drawer with some stacking jewelry trays to necklaces. In addition, I attached to wall by the mirror, this metal tiny-holes-pegboard thingey from the Container store, about 5 x 14 " or so. These come in various sizes and are mostly meant as bulletin board-type office thing, but using silver pushpins and stacked magnets, I can hang a dozen or more smallish necklaces there--the ones I use most during a given season. I like not having another item on the counter, I can see them and remember to wear them more. Due to the pegboard concept, I can move the pins up or down depending on how the jewelry hangs, long or wide. Thinking about putting another one beside it since my collection has grown. Downside is there is no dust protection, but so far has not been a problem.

Louise, that cabinet/mirror is brilliant.

I have multiple solutions for a large collection. My dresser actually has a lift-up compartment in the top that holds all my earrings, rings, and a bunch of my more delicate necklaces in separated sections. Really bulky but short (not likely to tangle) necklaces are in a little mirrored box that sits on my dresser.

I also have an old armoire in our bedroom that used to be my husband's closet in our old house (which had almost no closet space). It's now my accessory armoire! I use it for hats, scarves, layering camis, casual graphic tees, out of season running gear, swimsuits, etc. I hung most of my necklaces on hooks in the armoire, inside the doors. It works pretty well. Bracelets are in a clear box in the armoire as well.

Another vote for the tie rack (often easily found in thrift stores) for the way it keeps all your necklaces in view. I don't vary my earrings, wearing only silver hoops or small pearl studs, but if I had a lot of earrings I would use one of those hanging pocketed organizers with a tiny vinyl pocket for each item: http://www.organizeit.com/hang.....id=related I would avoid any earring storage that requires you to attach the earring to some sort of stand -- you want convenience.

I have a tie rack in my walk in closet for necklaces. It has two tiers alternating so is very convenient. For earrings I have taken egg cartons (the styrofoam ones) and cut the tops off = placed them in the top drawer of my dresser. My top drawer is not very deep so this works quite well. One of my friends has adapted this to her jewerly box by cutting the cartons to fit. The styro works nicely since the items can slide out, if that makes sense.

I use a chest from the hardware store with rows and rows and columns and columns of drawers that are normally used to store screws, nails, and other miscellaneous fixings. The drawers themselves are clear plastic so the hazy peek helps me find the right pair. The drawers are long enough from front to back to store my less bulky necklaces. I have a short neck so I don't have any huge hoops or chandelier earrings, but haven't had trouble with any earrings fitting. I have a high hanging bar crosswise in my step-in closet, so I use old dry cleaning hangers with paper still intact to hang bulky necklaces. This solution is functional albeit not terribly attractive.

I have started collecting various necklaces, earrings, bracelets and am having trouble finding an effective storage method. I hang the necklaces on the hangar with the top I usually wear it with but then i have to search if I want to pair a top with a different necklace. All my earrings are in a box right now, how sad! I think a trip to Storables is needed soon. I was thinking about a small pegboard that I could put necklaces on and attach to a wall in my closet. But earrings really have me stumped. Most are hoops or hanging, very few are studs. I would love to hear your great solutions and ideas for this.

Thanks, Sue
