Similar to Emily's suggestion, for years we used an over the door shoe organizer/hanger, clear plastic, the kind with pockets, 24 pockets for 12 shoes. I.e., bigger than the hosiery hanger. This works if you have a family's worth of gloves, including bulky ski gloves. Also can roll scarves and tuck inside. And earmuffs. And pretty much anything you may need handy.

When kids went off to college I took that down and installed an over the door handbag holder instead, and moved remaining gloves/hats into a drawer in a dresser near our front door. Gloves/hats are slightly less accessible (they get all jumbled, the drawer is dark, can't see everything) but I've got mine in one drawer and DH's in another so at least I'm not digging through 4 people's worth of gloves hats etc, just my own.

Thank you all. I may give Emily's solution a try ...

I've put mine in a hanging organizer meant for hosiery and hung it in the front hall closet.

I have a small tansu chest in our living room similar to this:

http://www.1stdibs.com/furnitu.....panese-mei

It holds my glove collection, which might sound a bit over-the-top, but in addition to the gloves I wear regularly, I inherited a large collection of vintage gloves from my grandmother, who was a glove buyer for a department store in the 50s and 60s. I think something like this works really well for gloves, hats and scarves, if you have room for it in a room near your main entrance (ours is about five steps from our front door and our coat closet, so it's easy access). It also holds a small lamp, so it serves a couple of functions.

We also have a little plastic stackable drawer unit in our coat closet that holds hats, scarves, etc. It is similar to this:

http://www.target.com/p/steril.....edium_1_34

We have one of those benches that has the baskets underneath (Pottery Barn, but there are probably cheaper ones at places like HomeGoods), and I can keep the hats and mittens in there year round and forget about them. Of course, it's another piece of furniture, but it's a useful one.

The move/consolidation is now complete (we loaded UHaul in a sleet storm, it was 12F, and drove through a pretty bad storm, but made it safely). And now I'm trying to find a place for all of my stuff. So much stuff!!! At my old apartment I had a box for gloves/mittens and threw hats on the top shelf of the closet. At the house, there isn't room for this arrangement as the closet is already overstuffed with other crap. Help me come up with a solution other than shoving them into a bag and then wedging them into a spot by sheer force.
