I love Melbourne!!

I think you have had good advice already. If I am going to run I take proper running shoes - for walking or gym workouts I could get by in lightweight trainers ie Nike Air and I would wear these on the plane.

Tanks get less smelly than tees I find.....so even the muscle tee style can work well. I would take extra socks as I will rewear other things but not socks.

Thank you so much for the solutions! This is a big shift for me...my previous response was that I would fit in an extra walk, or double up on exercise when I got home. But that hasn’t happened so I’m working on ways to plan structured exercise and let the walks/sightseeing be bonus activities.

I’m making a list of your suggestions and will try them out.

Btw, speaking of sightseeing, it was a gorgeous day in Melbourne. Got in 12,000 steps and loved seeing Queen Victoria Market, the Melbourne museum and the arcade.

I will admit that in the past I always left my workout gear at home. I really regretted not having it so on my last trip I made it a point to bring the shoes/leggings/sports bras/socks.

It was the best decision ever. I used everything I brought and was grateful to have it.

Here is the thing I did have to size up on my luggage to accommodate everything I packed. That was not ideal. My new plan is to stash my shoes/workout gear in tote that I will carry on the plane. I likely will not wear the shoes for travel.

I hand wash in the hotel sink and hang to dry.

I don’t fly, so there is less luggage space constraint, but if it were a choice of wearing or leaving out running shoes, I’d wear them.

However, when I travel by train, I do check my larger bag, so I want my running shoes in my carry-on backpack if I don’t wear them. I could probably quickly replace my clothes at Target or Kohl’s anywhere, but not shoes so easily.

The challenge is greater when traveling to a destination race. It’s like taking outfits for multiple sports. How warm is it going to be on Memorial Day in Boulder? I’m taking long tights, Capri tights, shorts, long-sleeve shirt, windbreaker, running vest, short-sleeve shirt, tank shirt, and an old tee shirt that can be worn over tank and left on the route if it’s a chilly-first-hot-later morning. Also, ear warmer, ball cap, gloves, sports bra and socks; this fills a largish packing cube.

Good luck deciding how to get the right clothes with you so you can fully enjoy the trip!

Joining the non trainer team! When I travel I swim, hike (in walking sandals), spin poi, and attend yoga and dance classes. But could also do martial arts, rent a bike, or run barefoot on the beach (most of my travel is to So. Cal.).

I always try to stay at hotels that have laundry facilites, leggings can be reworn, tanks don't take up much space, and can sleep in gear.

Eta-pilates, tai chi, barre, and paddling (SUP, canoe, kayak) also shoe free sports And pool dumbbells if you normally lift weights.
Gyms will let people buy a weekly pass, or if you're a Y member, you may be able to go for free anywhere!

I like Suz's advice. I always take Yoga clothes with me. And I need several pairs of shoes because I have to change my shoes during the day. My feet are very fussy.
I go to a Yoga studio for a class. I find a vigorous 90 minute class if possible. I also go to the hotel fitness room and use the treadmill for about 30 minutes. I wear my New Balance walking shoes (also wear them outside) for that activity. I don't have separate indoor and outdoor walking shoes. I clean the bottom of them.
My husband swims at a pool. He seems to be able to find one near by that meets his needs. The hotel one is usually too small for doing laps.

Like others above, I stick to in-room workouts (yoga, mostly) or I use the pool so I don’t have to deal with shoes. I sometimes end up using my yoga leggings as extra pjs or long johns.

I travel 5-6x/year, and can manage to squeeze 3 days of business clothes, 1-2 days of casual clothes, and workout gear (shorts, tee, socks, running shoes) in a carry-on. A longer trip, I'd probably have to check a larger bag, but I try to avoid that. I generally wear my running shoes, and pack two additional pairs, but, I've also packed the running shoes. It depends on what I'm doing when I land.

If I’m going somewhere where I know I’ll be walking a lot (like a city vacation or somewhere with a lot of sightseeing) I usually just skip working out. For more sedentary trips (like conferences in boring places) I do pack workout gear. Most of my workout stuff is pretty minimal (sports bra, ankle socks, lightweight shorts, tank) and will easily dry overnight if washed in the hotel sink if necessary. Sometimes instead of a tank or tee I’ll just rewear a camisole or tee I’ve worn as regular clothing during the trip already. The sneakers are the only thing that really take up much room in my bag, but I just think of it as a necessary evil. Somehow it all fits!

You are singing my song.

It's really tough to do this with only a carry on. Especially when your trips involve multiple destinations with different weather conditions and/or multiple purposes (i.e. some business, some visits with family, dining out, dressy events, etc.)

Even more so when your feet do best with many options, as mine do. I know people are always advising us to take one pair of shoes on a trip, but for me, that is just plain laughable. Even for a two day trip I would need 2 pairs minimum.

Here are a few ways I have managed it.

1. Consider how long your trip is. If your trip is very short, alter your workout schedule. Do your heavy workouts before you leave and when you return, even if those are not your usual days. Use one of your travel days as your rest day. Bring a swimsuit and swim in hotel pool (or outdoors!), go for a long walk, do light body weight exercise or yoga in your room with sock feet to stay active. This will allow you to avoid bringing workout shoes at all.

2. If this is not possible but it's still a fairly short trip, consider modifying your regular workouts so you can do them in the privacy of your room. You can do a lot with bodyweight. And maybe add a bit more NEAT (non exercise activity) to your day to step things up, so to speak.

3. If you need to bring running shoes, consider wearing them on the plane or investing in a "travel" pair of cross trainers that are a bit less less bulky than your typical shoes. A pair that will squish down really flat. Caution -- don't go too low profile if you are not used to it. That's how I gave myself an awful case of plantar fasciitis. :(

4. Keep using a carry on, but switch up what you use for your personal item. Instead of a "purse," bring a sizeable backpack that will still fit under the seat (best) or a large Le Pliage tote (second best) or better yet, both. (In that case, pack the Le Pliage for use as a tote at business events and use backpack on the plane.) In the backpack you can put your computer and lots of other papers etc. along with running shoes and your gym clothes. Pack a dressier bag (a flat style) in your suitcase and bring it out at destination, if needed. This has the advantage of keeping your gym stuff a bit separate from your other things. I have done this often. I use a Patagonia daypack with slot for laptop. It holds a lot more than even my largest tote and is easier to carry.

5. YES to re-wearing workout clothing (if not too disgusting) or washing workout clothes in the sink at night. They almost always dry if made of wicking fabrics. This allows you to take fewer clothing items with you.

6. If your trip is too long or includes too many other variables, let go of the carry-on idea. Life is a lot simpler. Yes, you sometimes have to wait a while for your bag at the carousel, but assuming you're not rushing to make a connection, travelling can also be a lot easier if someone else is dealing with your bag. Also, you can use waiting time to walk more in the airport. I would far rather bring regular luggage and know I'm really prepared to be active outdoors at my destination (even if I need a parka and snow boots, say) than save a few minutes at the airport.

In reality, my main strategies are 1. -- switch up workout days and find other ways to be active at destination, and 6. But I've relied on all of these at different times.

I usually bring one pair of sneakers, if possible, my Ecco Soft 7’s which are dressy enough to wear with a skirt, comfy enough for a long walk, but can also work if needed for some workouts, like lifting weights. I try to plan out my exercise in advance. My personal goal for travel exercise is to maintain my current fitness level as opposed to improving my fitness level. Maintenance is less cumbersome because it requires less exercise duration, intensity and frequency.

If there is a Yoga or Pilates studio, I call ahead to see if I can “visit” a class. Swimming my preferred travel aerobic exercise, because a swimsuit and goggles take up less space than sneakers. Aqua jogging, can be as intense a cardiac exercise as running. I can get by without bulky running sneakers if I stick with the above activities plus maybe long brisk walks for weight bearing cardio. I only bring one set of gym clothes. They wash and dry easily overnight if needed.

If you’re signed up for TSA Precheck, it doesn’t matter what kind of shoes you’re wearing, because you don’t have to take them off. If I flew a lot I would definitely sign up for it. I don’t fly that much and I’m signed up. It lasts for five years, I think.

As for fitting everything in a carryon, I can’t do it.

I travel a fair amount (usually 4-6 day trips) and bring workout stuff with me with just carryon. I bring 3-4 pair of shoes including running shoes. One of the shoes is usually a pair of very squishable flats and the other usually a pair of loafers. If it’s wintery or I have a dressier occasion the fourth pair would be booties or heels, otherwise I try to stick to those three pair. I bring leggings or capris for running (Athleta brand) and one or two of their ‘non-stinkable’ shirts (depending on climate tank/t-shirt/long sleeve) one sports bra, and on or two pair of icebreaker wool no show running socks, and extra workout underwear. My fitness routine is usually run one day, Hotel gym the next, repeat. Sometimes I fit in a walk or yoga instead of one of the other. I wash sports bras in the hotel sink after each workout and hang to dry in the bathroom. With the shirts depends how sweaty they get. If I am super crunched for space and really can’t fit stuff, I use yoga apps on my phone and do yoga classes in my hotel room plus try to squeeze in some walks. Hope that helps! It helps me to make a plan for what exercise routine I’ll do each day and reward myself for sticking to it for the whole trip.

On short trips I bring two pairs of shoes ... one for work clothes, one pair of running shoes. I wear work shoes while traveling and running shoes only when exercising (too smelly ). I will rewear my exercise gear or wash and hang dry overnight. Fresh socks always. If there is space I will bring two sets of exercise clothes. I much rather rewear work clothes and keep that capsule super tight to make sure I can bring exercise gear. I’ll throw in my swimsuit, goggles and cap as well.

When traveling I walk so much that i’ve Stopped taking workout clothes. I do take ECCO sneakers that are very light weight . Would Ponte pants or EF knit pants be ok for your workouts.. Nylon or silk joggers pack very small and light weight. I would collect nylon woven pieces. They wash and dry fast and are light weight. Mine are all thrifted but you might try REI.

As I've mentioned, I'm on a health program, and trying hard to stay focused. I'm finding working out to be the hardest change to make, and right now part of the issue is my travel.

Background: I'm on the road at least 1x/month. Right now is peak season - I was out 3 days this week, will be gone all of next week and most of the week following. I prefer to travel with only a carryon as this is work travel and often on a plane each night during the week. I'm also typically in flats while flying so I can get quickly through security.

So, do I just need to get smarter at packing so my tennis shoes/workout gear can fit in my carryon? Should I reconsider my travel outfit and plan to wear athletic shoes on the plane? How do you plan for workout clothes through a week of travel - rewear? wash at night?

Would love your real life examples... I"m off to get the laundry started before next week!
