I have most of my clothes hanging in my wardrobe. The long side houses dresses and bottoms and my one coat. The divided side has tops on the upper rail and jackets on the bottom. I have a drawer each for underwear, shorts/jeans and jumpers and cubby hole arrangement for shoes. There is some further hanging space where I store all clothes that are not being used in the current season. They get swapped into the main wardrobe as the weather changes. Items are hung in groups (skirts/pants/crops/shirts etc)and then subdivided according to colour. I do like having things on hangers, as it allows me to see what is available at a glance. Although I sometimes toy with the idea of grouping items into outfits ready to go.

Thistle, one thing I did when I had to pack up a million things for Project 333 was pack away out-of-season items into our big suitcase ... I figure the suitcase has to be stored, why store it empty?

Good luck with the transition ... and if I can say, my babies are 6 and almost 9, and I am JUST getting around the organizing the closets the way I want them ... so don't put too much pressure on yourself!

I have work items in one section, casual on another rail, some dressy/crossover items on another rail (I have few dresses so most of my closet rods are half-height).

But, I'm tempted to use my prime hanging rod space (front, eye level) for just 7-10 days' worth of items (to allow for weather changes) , then rotate them down. Still filed by tops & bottoms but by planning the ones I'll wear, and then just doing it regardless.

I organize my closet by type and then the tops by color. I don't have enough pants or skirts to make that necessary though. There are shelves in the closet where I keep sweaters, jeans, some loungewear, shoes, and handbags. I find shelf space to be almost more useful than rod space.

I keep out-of-season stuff in plastic bins in our attic (basements are very rare in NM). We have one tall dresser in the bedroom that we share. I have 3 drawers in it that have socks, bras, workout wear, and some special occasion clothes. I have a two-drawer nightstand that I use for underwear, PJ's, and random items like leggings and camis. Coats and hats go in the coat closet near the front door.

ETA - I keep some special occasion wear like fancy dresses in flat underbed storage drawers that are underneath the kids' beds. I also keep extra blankets, pillows, etc. in underbed drawers in the kids' room.

Small walk-in closet shared with DH. All seasons together sorted by colour. Footwear under. Bags above. Smalls, sweaters, t's, shorts in dresser drawers, though two big drawers store sports gear. Shared hallway closet for coats, scarves, hats, gloves/mitts in season. Separate closet for sports/gear specific outerwear.

My clothes take up 2/3 rail space in my closet, so I have room to hang outfit combos at one end. Weekends I play in my closet and put together a capsule for the coming week.

FWIW, until 6 months ago I had small closets in old houses, and shared with DH. I sometimes wonder if over 30 years of small closets has made me a small wardrobe person! At the moment I don't feel compelled to fill my new closet, but boy-oh-boy do I like having the space and the overhead light!

In my previous response I didn't really mention the non-hanging stuff or what I do with out of season items. In our last place I had the regular (non-walk-in) closet in our spare room/office, while my DH had the smaller closet in our bedroom. Woven shirts, dressy pants, skirts and dresses were all hung, while jeans, knit tops, sweaters, PJs, and undergarments were folded and put into a dresser and chest of drawers in our bedroom. Out of season items went into four rubbermaid drawers that got stored in the back of my closet. So I was used to things being in multiple places.

Our new house has a walk-in closet which DH and I share. The previous owners had put in some Ikea wardrobes so it's half wardrobes, half open hanging. DH has one Ikea wardrobe for both hanging and folding, with rarely worn items in the guest bedroom closet. Right now I'm using the rest of the open hanging space for my hanging items, with the folded items still in the dresser and chest of drawers out in the bedroom. I've got one mostly unused Ikea wardrobe that I could use to store folded stuff, if I went and got more shelves (it's set up for hanging right now). With that and the extra hanging space that I could use for hanging jeans and such, I theoretically could get everything, or most of it, into the walk-in closet and have everything within arm's reach. The out of season stuff still goes into bins and go on top of the wardrobes.

I've got a wooden chest (made by my grandfather) that holds all my purses, and a hanging loop for my belts. Some of my shoes are on a standing rack and some are on the shelving on top of the hanging rods.

Until our most recent move I've spent my whole adult life living in older places with smaller storage spaces and closets. I think every single house and living situation has its own quirks and you have to find where things can go to be accessible without driving you nuts.

I have a very small closet - it's also not very tall. Thankfully I don't have to share it with DH. I used to organize by like item but recently re-organized by color instead, mixing seasons. I am finding I like this organization MUCH better, as it helps me think outside of the box when putting together outfits. My closet goes like this from left to right:

1. Formal/holiday/occasional wear -- tucked in the farthest most reaches, which is basically behind a wall so I can't really see what is in there.

2. A few camel & olive items -- not my best color, so I don't want a lot in this category. My burberry is in this section.

3. Solid black items -- no matter what season; summer mixed in with spring and fall and winter. My black puffer is in this category. This is the biggest category. I do not bother to organize by type of item.

4. Solid grey items are next.

5. Whites & creams. My white jean jacket is in this category as well.

6. Expansion items -- this is what Vivienne Files calls it. These are items that mix neutrals together, so for example, a black and white patterned top would go in here, as would a grey and black striped top.

7. Accent colors -- organized by color. Patterns & solids are mixed in here. Plum, cranberry, blue, navy, blush, green, purple, etc. Having them altogether helped me parse out the colors that just don't mesh well with anything else, like yellow. Gone. Capping off the end of this section -- and end of my closet -- is my denim jacket and my cobalt wool coat.

Sweaters that can hold up to hanging are hung up. The rest of my sweaters are folded in two rolling carts below the hanging items, organized also by color.

Shoes -- the closet has two doors, on the back of each is a hanging shoe holder with pockets (enough for 24 pairs total -- I try to keep my shoe population within this number, not counting sneakers).

Boots & booties -- are lined up on the top shelf, organized by color as well.

I have a straw beach bag on the floor of my closet which holds bathing suit and beach gear and flip flops -- just in case I have a last-minute trip where they might get some use.

Jeans, tees, loungewear, gear, undies etc are in a dresser.

Scarves are rolled in a basket.

Shoulderbags are hanging in an organizer on the back of the hall closet. Clutches, hats, gloves are in a dresser in the front hall.

I now have most of my coats hanging in the closet, or at least, my favorite, nicest ones. It takes up room but I find it helps me plan what coat to wear with which outfit. I have a handful still hanging in the back hallway. The bulkiest or most "gearish" ones or ones that probably will get pruned soon. Snow boots are back there too.

I also have clothes tucked away in storage bins, but over the years, the amount has been drastically reduced. It's mostly now just a box for way-out-of-season stuff, i.e., summer items. And items that don't fit right now but I suspect they may again.

I reorganized back in the fall and I'm pleasantly surprised that my closet has stayed organized this way. Also find it helped immensely to see wardrobe holes that needed filling.

I'm fortunate to at last have a rather large closet where I can hang almost all of my garments. I have items grouped by type, and then further by color, and then even further by length (shirts are grouped by sleeveless, then 3/4 sleeve and then long sleeve; pants are also grouped by length). I've always done it this way, so I guess I'm just one of those people who has to be organized in order to think straight, lol. Off season garments are not stored elsewhere.

I recently purchased a revolving shoe rack, which I use for regular shoes and sandals. All of my boots are lined up against the wall, sorted by color and then by shaft height. I use rolled up flexible plastic cutting boards inside my tall boots to keep them standing up properly. My athletic shoes and sandals are on the closet floor, as are my clothes hampers.

Closet shelves above the hanging space is where I store family photos, handbags, bath towels, etc. Like I said, I have a lot of room.

In drawers are lingerie, swimsuits, shorts, socks, etc.

I switched to organizing by color first, then item type. It matches how my brain works: I want to wear the blue plaid sweater, now what colors go with that? Seeing a swathe of olive altogether lets me hold up a garment, and make a yes/no decision on color matching without even finding the pants I might choose.

Thistle, I forgot to mention that the drawers stack so you can temporarily put them on top of your dresser if you wanted. If you have a mirror or something there, you could remove it until you are done with the transition. Once again, it's not pretty, but it would give you storage and not take up floor space.

I also have a tall husband, and a large bed, and can remember the issues when we lived in a tiny apartment with an infant and a toddler. Actually, one thing I recall was how everything kept moving upwards out of our kids reach! Everything was at risk of toppling over at any moment, and we rigged everything with earthquake safety straps even though we did not live in an earthquake zone

Thistle, at one point, when my wardrobe was overly large, I used plastic rolling drawers that I purchased at Target. They're not pretty, but they're good for things that don't need hanging in the closet.

I am trying to figure out how to organize as I bring up my regular clothes and start retiring my maternity wardrobe.

My biggest issue is space. We have an older home so closet's are at a premium. The bedroom is average size to begin with, and DH had to have a king size bed (and I so agreed to it. At 6'2" he is a bed hog in a smaller one). I don't want to feel cramped, so we bought a bed with drawers that run the full length under it. This helps.

So, I have half of an average 6' closet, and under the bed drawers. For everything.

I used to keep off season stuff in the computer room closet, but that has all been given over to DD2.

I have a very small closet in an older (1960's) home. I have the entire master bedroom closet and DH has the closet in one of the spare rooms. Out of season clothing is kept in a large closet in the basement (Oh how I wish that large closet was upstairs!). I re-did the the closets in the main house myself. I built shelves and added tiers of hanging racks. In my closet, I organize by color and by type of clothing. I also have a dresser that houses undies, sleepwear, and socks. I have under-the-bed storage drawers for my scarves and nylons/tights.

I have jeans and sweaters folded on shelving above the hanging rail. On the hanging rail itself are the bulk of either Autumn/Winter or Spring/Summer clothing, as I pop a few things in an under-bed draw for out of season storage. I have all my skirts together, all my tops together and all my trousers that aren't jeans together. Jackets/coats are always at the one end where there is more length. I don't colour code. Oh, and tees and underwear are kept folded in a chest of drawers. All of my shoes are in modular shoe storage on the floor of the closet and winter boots are in the under-stairs closet down stairs.

Love reading what everyone's does :)

I am lucky because early on after moving into our current house, DH offered me use of the whole walk in robe. Our bedroom is a generous size we have a stand alone white Ikea wardrobe for DH that looks like it's actually part of the house.

So I will admit the space is not an issue. I have all my clothes together ie. all seasons. I hang by type, say pants together, dresses together etc and then they are hang in colours. My jeans are folded on a shelf in the walk in. Another shelf holds some jewellery, most notably earrings, and handbags are stored on the shelf above my clothing. My wardrobe is a U shape. The shelf above the bags is too high to daily use so I display some special things that I no longer wear, like vintage shoes, classic handbag etc.

Shoes are on shoe racks running along the bottom of the walk in.

Coats are hanging in the spare room wardrobe because even in winter I don't wear them daily so I don't need them in the walk in.

Underwear, sleepwear, layering tees, scarves, hats and gloves are kept in a chest of drawers in my bedroom.

I do what Laura does, by category (dresses together, jackets together, etc.) I go from black to grey to light, then colors.

I had the idea this weekend to get the biggest Ziploc storage bags I can find, and organize accessories together by color (scarves, gloves, belts), punch a hole at the top of the bag, and hang them. I think it will help with overlooking accessory items.

I'm not short on space but I have been moving seasonal items out of my main closet (a good sized walk in I share with DH.) Things feel more fresh if I bring them back in at the beginning of the season rather than seeing them hanging there unworn for months.

In my main closet, items are sorted by category, then by color. I keep underwear, socks/tights, pajamas, scarves and bathing suits in my dresser drawers; everything else is in the closet.

By type and by colour as well as by season.

I have half of our (non-walk-in) regular sized closet. (The full rod is about 8 feet and we split it.) Luckily for me, there are also some shelves in this closet, which we also share. I have two.

We have another, bigger closet in our hallway. This is where we store our luggage, part of our guest bed (it breaks into pieces), and our out of season clothing.

In-season coats are in our front hallway on hooks, or in our basement on hooks (depending on frequency of wear).

Out of season clothing (including coats & boots) goes in that hallway closet near our bedroom.

In-rotation indoor clothing is all either in the closet, or for me, in a small shoulder height armoire, which I have fitted with baskets that act like drawers. In the armoire, I keep my basics (undies), my gear, my PJs, my socks, my hose, and my skinny and BF jeans folded up.

(In summer, I have shorts there, too.)

In the closet, I keep my scarves, most of my sweaters and knit tops, and my legging type jeans folded on my two shelves. I organize them by type (i.e. turtlenecks are in one pile, lighter weight knit tops are in a basket rolled), and cashmere sweaters form one pile. I also roughly organize by colour.

On the rod, shirts and blouses are organized by colour. Next, I have pants and skirts on special hangers. Then dresses, then jackets. Finally, a hanger with all my belts on it. I have a few bags on a shelf above, and shoes & boots below, some on a rack and some on the floor itself.

Phew! Long winded or what?

So, my question to you. How do YOU organize your closet, and what makes sense to you?

I have all seasons together in my closet. It is sorted by type, pants/jeans, skirts, button front tops, pullover tops, jackets, sweaters, outerwear. Shoes and bags each have there own section of shelving. All categories are then sorted by color, lightest to darkest.

ETA - I tried to put all categories together sorted by color but I did not find that workable for me.

I organize much like Janet. Trousers, shorts, cardigans, and off-season clothing are folded in drawers, shelves, or boxes. My long hanging section holds dresses, business wear, and long skirts. The short hanging section contains skirts and all in season tops/sweaters (tops first, then skirts). Tops are sorted as follows: cream, brown, and colours grouped in progression. Prints are hung next to their dominant solids.

I share a very small modern walk-in wardrobe with Greg. Ask Inge who has seen it - it's VERY small because we live in a small house.

Most of my stuff is on hangers. Tops, bottoms and dresses are organized by item and by colour. All seasons are represented at once. Some of my knitwear is folded on the shelves, and also arranged by colour. My loungewear, scarves and hats are shelved with my knitwear. My footwear is stacked on racks below my clothes. My bags are displayed on the top shelf, and on a rack behind the wardrobe door.

Basics (undies, socks, sleepwear and workout wear) are in an armoire in our bedroom. Coats are in the coat closet downstairs. That's it.

I organize by kind (shirts, jackets, pants, skirts) then by color. I have a huge walk in and I seasonally rotate. I was thinking today I need to reorganize as I no longer need direct access to work-type clothing but better access to gear and casual because I'm no longer working even part-time. My work wardrobe was heavily skewed to business casual so lots of stuff can be repurposed but I did recently purge a lot of work blazers, etc. because they are no longer worn or are too big. I do have a side of the closet that works best for long items like dresses. The other side has double racks. I also have lots of wire shelving, wire baskets and a dresser for underwear, socks, bras, etc. Plus, I have an ancient NordicTrak ski machine I used to use daily, but now use as a hanging rack. I know I need to trash it but there's no market for it now. Alas.

Living in an old house with very small closets, I'm not able to keep everything together in one spot. In my main bedroom closet that houses most of my day-to-day clothes, I'm another one who organizes by type. I try to keep those sections sub sorted by colour, but my midseason, the colour separating is gone. I find that a great time to pull everything out and do a rejig and get rid of stuff I'm not wearing .

It is my dream in life to have a big walk-in closet with a light . I don't ask for much but oh man, would that be nice

I organise like with like. Tops together, skirts together etc. I usually hang clean stuff going in on the right of each section so I have an idea what hasn't been worn in a while if it's on the left of the section x

I have jeans, tees, and sweaters folded on shelves in my closet. Workout wear is folded or rolled in baskets on the lower shelves.

My hanging stuff is organized as follows:

Long section: dresses, then skirts, my few pairs of trousers, and my long jackets

Top short section: blazers, jackets, vests

Bottom short section: tops and blouses. Left to right: long sleeved knits, long sleeved blouses, short sleeved/sleeveless knits, and short-sleeved/sleeveless blouses. Each section is sorted by color (neutrals and then roygbiv), and I hang printed items with the color that most dominates the print. This enables me to find what I need quickly, and I find mixing and matching easier than ever before.
