I have a pixie now (not too short) that is super easy to wear and actually looks best when it is wind blown. Anyway, I used to have a bob with side swept bangs and stacked in the back. Since I have fine straight hair I used Rusk Thickening Spray on my wet hair and then would blow dry rough (using my fingers first until it was mostly dry and them using my brushes to smooth out. I found that if I started drying my hair when it was not soaking my hair turned out great. Now with the pixie I use a texturizing cream and blow dry my hair just using my fingers and it all falls into place and looks great. (I love my stylist!!)

If you hair is wavy you can embrace the waves when you style using a product especially for wavy hair, but if you want straight probably the best thing to use is a flat iron or hairdryer with a big rounded brush that would just sleek out your hair and no curls. Then hairspray to keep it smooth. Have you considered using pretty hair combs or pins to keep your hair pinned back?

I recommend paste over wax, although it depends on texture - paste washes right out, while wax takes some work!

Mine is a good bit shorter than yours, though!

Curls are a whole other devious animal. My hair actually looks less wild when it's long because the weight tames the curl a little and I look less like a tumbleweed.

Emily that's a nice tool ... Especially for someone like me! I would remember that the next time I go short.

I am actually pondering on my next haircut. This post is from 2 months back ;). Should I go short or let it grow out? Hmmmmm...

Have you tried/heard of a hot air brush? I use one like the one below on my bangs. I am not great at hair stuff and have a hard time weilding a round brush and blowdryer with any precision, a tool like this leaves you a hand free to guide your hair where you want it to go.

I've got short hair... it's not quite pixie on the sides and back, but close. The top's quite short. It works with my fine hair, and my midlife-appearing cowlicks. I find that it lays better when I don't try to blow it dry, although I'll blow some air on the back to fluff it up a bit. I use a Denman brush out of the shower, let it mostly air-dry, fluff up the back and sides using a small round brush, and run some Pantene hair wax through it just once to make the layers stand out more. I grew my hair longer (not quite to shoulder length) several times in the past few years but it was always a boatload of work to make it look right, and I feel so much happier with my hair short.

So funny! I was going to say a bit of Redken Rewind does the job for me but then I read that your hair is long enough to go behind your ears and even i to a ponytail. And then I thought, hehe that's LONG hair. Mine's a pixie with about 1.5" at the longest so I'm not much help.

I am sorry I took so long to reply to this post!!

I just read every post carefully! Its overwhelming to say the least lol! I think I will just grow out my hair and go back to sporting a longer length! Or may be shorter! I so love non fussy hair! One less thing to worry about!

At the same time I admire the efforts you girls put into making that hair behave! It doesn't look as easy as you girls make it look is it? Oh boy! Thanks for all the wisdom on this thread! I am going to slowly work on this! Baby steps!

I am another gal who sports a very short (almost pixie) do -- currently worn spiky. It is a fairly carefree style, but I find that I still need to tame it a bit. I use a hair putty or texturizing paste to give me more control. My bangs, which are a bit longer and angled, sometimes need to be flat-ironed to get rid of that S-curve often that happens with wavy hair. When my hair was slightly longer -- I just had to allow for the fact that my hair was going to wave no matter what I did. I sported a slightly layered "wavy bob" instead of a straighter, sleeker style.

My hair right now is an angled bob, shorter in the back and longer in the front. Just long enough it can tuck behind the ears but I can't make a pony tail at all. My hair is fine and naturally wavy -- the shorter it is, the more it curls. But has a tendency to frizz, big time!

Here's my routine --

1. Comb it out with a big tooth comb.

2. Apply leave-in conditioner/styling lotion.

3. Allow to air dry for 20-30 minutes. (This is not an essential step, but my hair is so fine AND color treated, I want to minimize hot tools as much as possible, so if I have the time, I let the air do most of the drying magic.)

4. Blow dry next. It is a skill that needs to be learned. Each time I get my hair done, I watch carefully and ask my hairdresser to show me new tricks, and coach me through it. Highly recommend! Basically first I just blast my hair all over, from the back towards the front, scrunching with my hands to encourage volume. Then I use a big round brush and take sections, starting from the bottom. You pull the bottom sections out horizontal to the ground, and point the blow dryer from roots to ends as you pull the brush through the section. When you get to the top sections, you pull the hair straight up if you can. And You want to point the blow dryer DOWN the hair, so you don't wind up with frizz.

Go section by section and work your way around until it's all dry. At this point, your bob is going to be looking ... overly round... and the smaller the round brush, the more curled at the ends it will be. But you should have tons of volume at the top.

5. If it's too much roundness, then you take a flat iron and use it next. You don't need to go overboard with the flat iron. Normally I can just do the tips only, to straighten them, and the face-framing pieces. That said, flat irons remove the last bits of moisture from your hair and this "Sets" it -- which means it will not frizz when you walk out the door. If you are flat ironing and notice steam, that will show you how much moisture is still left, even when you thought you blew it dry thoroughly and it looks dry to you. If I am walking out the door soon, and especially if it's a humid / rainy day, I will do the whole head with the flat iron. Otherwise, frizz central!

6. When my hair is first cut, and overly short, I find I do have to bring out the wax to tame the ends and keep them in place. Just the tips. You don't need a lot. It's been a couple weeks since my last cut, and now I don't need the wax.

When my hair is longer I do all these same steps! The only difference is that I may get lazy and just plop it in a ponytail. My hair is so fine and thin I wind up with a nubbin -- it's not a good look. Which is why I had it chopped off in the first place.

When I've had pixie cuts (in the far distant past) I didn't need to do any of this. It was a true wash-and-go style. Unfortunately, it also made my hair look dreadfully thin and patchy.

And that concludes my novel, "Ode to the Nubbin."

Well personally my solution has been to go with the natural texture of my hair. I'm pretty low-maintenance and don't seem willing to learn hair stuff, so my bob is currently a messy/wavy style that works for me. And washing it less does help especially in the winter (see Ingunn's losing curl thread for tips - I never called my long hair curly but at shorter lengths/layered it is very definitely wavy and curly hair tips apply). Still, I would say that most mornings that I don't wash I have to at least wet my hair somewhat and scrunch/re-arrange.
Even with a pixie that didn't appear curly at all because it was so short, I did often have to wet my hair in the AM to restyle it because the bangs might be pointing any which way when I woke up. Longer hair can definitely be easier especially if one is rocking a hippy-ish low maintenance look... it took me a while (years) to figure out how to do shorter hair stylishly yet low maintenance.

My secret weapon is a hot air styling brush. I'm a total klutz when it comes to straighteners and curling irons, but the brush I can handle without injuring myself.
http://www.amazon.com/Conair-H.....518727?s=b

I wash and blow dry my hair with my fingers, then quickly use a paddle brush on my almost dry hair using Imogen's sides/front/back technique.
http://www.insideoutstyleblog......nutes.html

Usually that does the trick, but, if my hair is still a bit wonky, or if it needs some attention later in the day, I use the styling brush to tame/coax the errant bits into shape. I also pepper my stylist with questions about the products she uses when I get my hair cut. Growing up with long hair in the minimalist sixties and seventies, I never experimented with "product" so I was a total newbie to using gels, waxes, pomades, shine-enhancers, frizz tamers, and all the other goo that is now available. My twenty-something stylist loves to give me lessons--sometimes the results get washed out as soon as I get home, but I've picked up lots of good tips to the point where I love spiking up my hair when I go out in the evening. She alleviates my main hair fear--old lady hair!

Our hair types and styles sound similar. Ask your stylist about hair products and purchase whatever he or she uses on you. Styling shorter hair takes a little more time, than longer hair, but I love the polished look of smooth hair. My routine is about 10 minutes: 3 pumps of aveda phomollient combed throughout the hair follow ed by a blow dry using a ceramic round brush and touched up with a flat iron and a spritz of Sebastian shaper +. Hope this helps a little.

Omg! This is lot of work! And to think I never asked my stylist anything about what to use for my hair! I just bought an anti frizz serum and that's it! I bought a blow drier and have no clue how to use it properly. I think I will have to check some videos for that.

I got a pixie cut. Luckily, I've received compliments from many people, and one lady told me yesterday that short hair really suits me. I jokingly say my hair is so difficult that I decided to cut off everything that offends me. :)The only part that's still a little long is the top, and that's because if it's cut too short on top, it'll stick straight up. I blow it dry, which only takes a few seconds because my fine hair dries so fast, sprinkle a little bit of Sexy Hair Powder (see below), scrunch into shape and go.

When I first cut my hair short I asked my stylist which styling products I should use. I blow dry mine dry and don't do anything particular while blow drying - just blast it at the highest setting. Once it's dry, I use a round brush on the top portion to control all the weird waves (my hair isn't perfectly straight but the waves are very uneven. It basically looks like it's been slept on - one side is wavier than the other, etc.) Then I use a very small amount of styling wax on the back and ends. I usually use a little hair spray on my bangs to keep them out of my eyes. It's super quick and easy now that I know what I'm doing.

At that length (mine is there, too), I think it's all about the prep work. If you get your hair prepped right, it doesn't take nearly as much product and additional styling to get it to behave.

My basic routine is to wash, apply a styling cream all over, and then an additional root booster because I have fine hair but lots of it. Then I blow dry, using paddle brush. I do my roots first, as that gives the style some shape, and then dry the rest. Sometimes I use a round brush on the ends if I'm going for the classic bob look (or my hair is being especially unruly). After it's dry, I sometimes use a flat iron on the ends but not always -- my hair can't handle that amount of heat styling every day.

I hope that helps. I love how this length looks, but it can be a little high-maintenance at times compared to very short or long hair.

Thanks Linda for the insight. I do have a longish Bob. Hmmm ... When long my hair is naturally straight, but when its short I didn't know it was going to be a different ball game! New to blow drying and new to all kind of hair products (other than coconut oil o_O, shampoo and conditioner!)

It sounds like you have short hair that is on the longer side (if you can push behind your ears). I have a pixie now, but when my hair was jaw length, the straightening iron and smoothing serum were my best friends. I used the serum when blow drying with a round brush, then the straightener to finish when it was dry. Yes, it was a lot of styling, which is one reason why I ended up getting a pixie.

Mine is really wild! I am constantly pushing them behind my ears. I have resorted to pulling it back into a little pony tail! But that just further worsens the hair situation by creating weird and unwanted waves. What am I to do? Should I let them loose always?

Do you use some kind of holding gel to make it look done? I want them to behave atleast when I am out dressed up. New to short hair and I need all the help I could get! Thanks!
