OK, I'm keeping #2, because Diana reminded me that these may be fun with flared jeans (which I don't own, but might). Plus, they are very, very comfortable.I used to wear them a lot and they probably only have one more year of wear in them, anyway, so they won't be hanging around forever.
#1 and #3 are out. Plus, I have banished brown from my wardrobe, so they don't even go with anything I have, except jeans.
#4 is in the "wait and see" category. I'll see what my summer clothes look like and if I need them. They've only been worn once, and if I go through another summer without wearing them, out they go.
I still struggle with what is dated, especially when it comes to shoes, but I did toss an old pair of very square-toed booties, so at least I got that right on my own!
Thanks, all.

I'd keep #2 and #3 - but I think for your style, just #2.

Do they light up when you walk?
I just spent the past week combing through sites looking for a pair of shoes. I found models that strongly resembled #1, 2 and 4, but not #3.
I noticed that square toes seemed to be out, very pointed toes are in, except with offbeat designers (John Fluevog), who manage to incorporate a bit of everything.

I think #2 has a retro classic style that always works. Besides, with the 70s resurgence they will probably be trendy in the spring too. #4 looks fine to me also.

The toe box on #1 (elongated with squared off toe) does look dated to me. If it had an almond or even round toe it would be classic.

I'm not wild about #3 either. I'm not sure why, I just don't really like it maybe. (Eta: but maybe show it to us on your foot... I think this type of shoe with elastic straps often looks much better on a foot. )

I'm like Thistle--feel I need to learn more about what makes a shoe outdated. For example: I love the maryjanes in pic 1. They look so timeless to me, and paired with the right outfit they really please my eye. But from the responses here I gather I am not really up to date!

I'd have fun with the wooden heel chunky sandals in pic 2, but I fear the others are past their style prime. The maryjane style in pic 1 could be considered an artsy classic I suppose, and looks very comfy, but the toe looks a little long now to my eye. I'm pretty critical about shoes though, and have definite ideas about what I find fashionable - so take my comments with that particular grain of salt.

I am always on pinterest, European style blogs, and more importantly, UK and US fashion mags - good resources all for what's current.

I find it super hard to know the differene between "dated" and "classic" or just not trendy.

I will be watching with interest

I'm doing a closet purge, and having trouble figuring out of some of my shoes are dated. These aren't shoes that I wear often, so it won't break my heart to let them go, but with fewer shoes in my closet, these might see the light of day more often if they are still current. Thoughts? Thanks.
