Wow! Thanks for all the responses, ladies! I will definitely post a photo when I get my hair cut in a few weeks. :)

Rute - Thanks! #4 seems popular - I think chin length hair must suit me. :)

Janet - Hair should be fun, and mixing it up at the salon seems like an easy way to play with one's look without having to go out an buy a new wardrobe. Even with middle length hair, there are loads of variations that can keep it interesting. :)

Gradfashionista - Yes, I agree! Blow drying can be such a pain - hence why I mostly shower at night and just let it dry overnight.

Annabelle - Thanks, that's really sweet! Right now I'm considering something around that length, but perhaps a bit less layered so it would be easier to grow out if I changed my mind again.

I love you in #4. If I had your looks and if the style fits your lifestyle, I'd take that photo to the hairdresser and ask for exactly that. It might remind you of 2013 but it's timeless with its layers and softness combination.

You have gorgeous hair and I like the long hair and the pixie cut equally, but for different reasons. I don't know if there's any set time that requires a change--maybe you have more/less time for upkeep, bigger/smaller budget for trips to the hairdresser, or a feeling like that no matter what clothing or make-up you wear, your still looks blah. I've done drastic cuts a few times because I couldn't be bothered with doing what is required to have pretty long hair (products and blowdrying).

I actually like your hair best in the mid to longer lengths in these photos, but I agree that you have such great features and hair that you can easily pull off any of these styles and more.

I'd say if you feel like it's time for a change, it's time. Hair is great for changing because it keeps growing out, offering new opportunities all the time. Have fun with it while you're young, especially.

Personally, I don't look particularly good in very short or very long hair, which sometimes feels a little restricting, but I try to do the same thing Aziraphale mentions -- slight changes to cut and/or color each time I go to the salon, to keep myself from getting totally bored with my hair and to keep my style looking at least somewhat fresh or current.

Sorry for the delayed replies!

Texstyle - Hmmm. I hadn't thought of that! I'll need to look at more photos of those styles to see how I think it would look on me. Thanks for the suggestions!

Thirkellgirl - Thanks! Yes, it can be tricky if the stylist cuts it too short. My friend once almost got a buzzcut because she was in Portugal for the summer and she needed her hair cut. She pointed to her head and said the Portuguese word for "cut". It was very short, but it suited her surprisingly well!

I love your hair in the three shortest lengths. You just look adorable and current! I do something slightly different with my hair every time I get it cut. I've had a few really miserably short haircuts in the past year... I think I wasn't communicating well with my stylist, or he wasn't listening well. I know it's time when I start longing for my hair to be easier to deal with.

Stress can do funny things to people so I'd wait until after your exam to think about it. Then you can give it some thought and decide what direction to take. If you don't feel fabulous, confident and sure about your hairstyle, then it might be time to consider something new.

My hair is ruled by boredom. I like your hair a lot at chin length or thereabouts. You look good with it at all lengths, but I find the chin length fresh and accessible.

abc - I definitely understand that feeling! I'm actually quite stressed at the moment with a big exam coming up, so part of me wonders if this is just a response to that. When I got the pixie cut, that was also precipitated by a big change in my life. Perhaps it's an outward expression of the inner changes that are happening. :)

Aziraphale - Solid advice. I think it's good to mix it up with hair - after all, it grows back so no change is truly permanent. As I said to abc, I'm quite stressed at the moment and I'm deciding if my urge to "chop it all off" is a response to this or if it is a prevailing desire. My exam will be over in a few weeks, so I think I will wait until at least that is over before making an appointment with the hairdresser.

Summer - Yes, I think a bob would be a good start. They grow out well if I decide I don't like it, and they're easier to get trimmed than pixie cuts (I think..!)

Olivegreen - That's fantastic that you're growing your hair out! One of the reservations I have about cutting my hair is that I love braiding it and easy updos. The thing is that at the moment I'm not motivated to actually do these things with my hair and it just gets thrown into a bun or a single braid. So I think, 'how boring, you may as well just cut it'.

Lara - Thank you! And that is also really good advice. I've never dyed my hair, but I would definitely consider it in a few years (perhaps when I have a better income and can afford regular trips to the salon!)

Peri - Thanks! Yes, I think I will think about this a bit more and do some research. I think a trip to the hairdresser is probably in order. Although whether I'll choose something dramatic or just a trim, I don't know yet. haha.

You are gorgeous! You are one of those people who can shave their heads and still be beautiful.

But to answer your question, it is time to change your hair style when it starts to date you. My neighbor has the most gorgeous hair (she is 48) and has not changed the style in over 20 years. It does nothing for her. Also, you have to decide what your style is, flirty, seductive, casual, glamorous, timeless, etc and the hairstyle will find you.

Finally, it is time to change your hair color when your current color does absolutely nothing for you. Hairstyle and color should enhance your overall look in my opinion and not overwhelm or understate your look.

You have great hair! Thick, shining, nice color. I always feel that people with lovely hair can grow it and it says such nice things about them and their health and youthfulness. It also lends itself to several simple but elegant updos, and perhaps less hair washing and product use. All good.
I stuck to short hair for decades as mine was hard to deal with at length. With age and going quite grey, it straightened up and is flying right, so growing it out, looking forward to a braid and a topknot.
I think with the more natural and undone styles these days, long hair is a fun way to go.

You have beautiful hair, and you're lucky to be able to wear any length equally well. The only problem comes, as you say, when you have to grow out a short cut. Why not go for the bob to start with? You can vary the cut from time to time, and it will be easy to grow out again should you want to.

You have a very pretty oval face, so you are lucky -- most styles suit you!

To answer your question 'How do you know when it's time to change your length or colour?' -- are you asking about people in general, or me personally? Because I think the general rule of thumb is to change your style every couple of years if you want to look current. For me personally, it's more often than that, because I get tired of my hairstyle quite quickly. I don't generally go for radical change, but every time I go for a haircut, I get something different. Sometimes it's the colour, sometimes it's the cut, sometimes both. I've learned not to get a pixie cut -- not because they aren't awesome, but because I do not possess the discipline to style it every day (my thick hair is not naturally suited to a pixie style, so it requires intense taming) and go in for a trim every six weeks! (Never mind the fact that I don't really have the time, either).

So, for you, the question is, do you feel like changing it? If so, go for it. You don't have to go for an extreme change. Maybe a subtle colour, or a somewhat shorter cut. A classic bob is lovely.

The thing to remember about hair? It grows back. :-)

I haven't read the other replies but I find I crave a change in my hairstyle when I have other change going on in my life, like a mark of transition in my life or something. Not sure if I am the only one.

I chopped my hair off a year or so ago and had to live through the mullet phase as well. I'm back to long hair and find it to be easier given my lifestyle (two kids under age 3 and WFH / MOTG lifestyle). I'm doing ok with not pulling it back every day - when it gets to that, I'll know it's time for a change :)

Jackie - Thanks, Jackie! I wish I were more decisive like you when I get the urge for a change in length. I don't have a salon that I regularly go to or trust, so I often find I don't know where to start when I want to get my hair cut. It's been over a year since I cut it!

Thistle - You are both witty and wise! Yes, lifestyle comes before hairstyle for sure. I enjoyed having my hair dry so quickly when I had short hair, but I also missed being able to braid it. However, I rarely braid it nowadays (mornings are too rushed!) so maybe it's worse being realistic about long hair.

Suz - Yes! I loved the wash and wear part of having a pixie cut, although, I don't miss the bedhead. I never experienced bed head until I had short hair, but then it was easy to shower in the mornings.

Alasse - Thank you! That's really sweet of you to say. I'm not sure if I'm ready to commit to a haircut yet. I've found that there are pros and cons of having short hair as well as long hair. The thing I love about hair is that it grows back, so although new styles are risky at least they are not permanent!

AM - yes, I can relate to that cyclical feeling. At the moment, I'm quite stressed with exams and part of me wonders if this desire for change is just a response to that! Please show us here if you do decide to start the cycle again. :)

Marilyn - thanks! I definitely enjoyed having short hair. It's just a question of deciding whether a change is really what I want right now. :)

Isabel - haha. You have the right philosophy there! Hair does indeed grow back. Thanks for your kinds words as well.

Bettycrocker - yes, that was one of the main draw backs I found with having short hair. I spent way more time discussing what I wanted with the hairdresser than I ever had with long hair. When hair is shorter, little changes can make a big difference!

My annoying hair is best cut short, so I commit to going to the salon every 4 weeks. I've also started getting it colored because I can't stand white hair and want to keep my natural brown hair color.

If you want short hair, you do need to get it cut frequently, so think about that before you go get it cut.

It's true, you're very, very pretty AND (not necessarily the same thing)all these styles and lengths look great on you.
Some girls get so attached to one style or another but for some, and I was one of them, change is good. I've never colored my hair because I'm not convinced it's healthy and I don't enjoy salons enough to commit to the maintenance.
At your age it grows back quickly anyway, I vote have fun.

#2 pixie is my favourite on you followed by #4. I think short hair suits you and the look is certainly trending.

I have also been cyclical with my hair. Grow it long, cut it to a bob. Repeat. But now I have had long hair for quite some time and I've really been contemplated a layered bob. But putting it up in a bun, a pony tail, and styling it down does create some nice options. For summer, I love having it up. I think when I really want change, I'll know because I will actually go out and buy magazines to explore my options. For now, I sit with the idea of change for a few months and if it passes -- I don't make any changes. If it doesn't pass -- well, I go buy the magazines. I personally prefer #4 but it looks like you wear all of these styles very well.

First off, you are really pretty. I like all the lengths in 1-4 on you. Are you discontented with the long-short bob-pixie cycle and wanting to commit to one particular hairstyle?

On a more serious note, your hair is something you wear everyday. I am not sure there is a specific moment when I have ever decided "I need X because of Y"

For me, it has been a question of:
1. What my hair permits (Mine is super thick and heavy)
2. What flatters (I have a very round face)
3. Time (I have a baby and a 3 year old. Yep, time is precious)
4. My age (I would feel silly in the same hair I had at 16)

I have a stylist I trust and work with given the contraints in my life. WOuld my hair look cuter with a higher maintenance style. Yes. Will I spend the time on it? Nope. So, let's do what works for me right now.

As for color, I experimented with highlights and low lights once. I just don't have the time for it and it was expensive to upkeep (see point #3 above :) ) I have learned to like my natural color.

You have gorgeous hair and look pretty in all your photos -- but I have to say, in the pixie cut, you truly shine. It brings attention to your lovely eyes.

Admittedly, I am biased. For decades, my pattern was pixie/ grow out/ pixie again. I have finally acknowledged that I'm happiest and most "me" with the pixie. The way I see it, the frequent cuts are balanced by the fact that I don't need to spend any time on it between cuts. It's literally wash and wear.

You are so lucky - you look amazing in all lengths! I love your pixie, and also your bob in 4. Wow. I also tend to alternate like you. I can't go super long bc my hair is so fine, but I grow it a bit, then bob it, then grow it. I go by gut, and when it needs a cut it needs it now. I also feel the need for change right now, but am a bit more limited in what I can do. Looking forward to seeing what you do, you have such a a beautiful face.
