Thanks for the suggestions ladies. I’m trying to convince myself that I like the dress with the straps for two reasons: 1) I’ve never been to a tailor and would hate to try a tailor out with this beautiful and expensive dress and 2) I have so many other recital preparations that I really want to call the dress done. I’ll try to post a picture of me in the dress with the straps soon. Perhaps they aren’t so bad, but then again perhaps they are. I’d love to have some feedback. Then again, the bustier and double stick tape are still possibilities. More pictures will come soon.

Hmm, maybe it's not a corset, but a bustier:

That dress is gorgeous on you!

I'm no expert (strapless is one style I cannot wear at all - makes me look like a line-backer) but I once saw Tim Gunn talk about this on Project Runway, or was it the WNTW folks? Now I can't remember which!

Apparently, there is an art to constructing strapless dresses so they don't slip. It's all in the fit. Plain and simple, properly fitted strapless dresses won't slip. It has nothing to do with your chest size. I can't remember all the details, but I believe it has to do with boning? How it fits on the torso.

So, my recommendation is to get on over to a tailor and see if they can tailor it. The dress is worth it - you look fab in it.

Otherwise - if tailoring is impossible - you might try buying one of those strapless corsets that brides wear under their gowns. This may be enough to keep it up; if it's not, then you could always apply double-sticky tape between the dress and the corset, or even discreetly sew the corset into the dress itself. The corset will act as boning, if the dress doesn't have any.

Hmm, I think it's almost impossible to stop strapless items from sliding, especially if they are not made from knitted material.

How about trying some double-sticky tape around the inside of the dress on the top? That might help.

This is sort of an odd question, but how do you keep a strapless dress in place? I have a beautiful strapless dress for my senior recital, but for some reason when I practice in it, it will not stay up.

Here is the dress on Jessica McClintock’s site: http://www.jessicamcclintock.c.....y_rn=10317

And here is me wearing the dress: http://i9.photobucket.com/albu.....edited.jpg

The obvious answer is that my bust is too small, but that does not appear to be the problem. I’ve tried wearing a padded bra and even adding silicon bra fillers to the point where the dress will barely zip up. Still it slides down and shows my bra by the time I’m half way through my second song. This messes up my posture and causes me to worry about the dress, making singing well impossible. We have tried adding straps, but now that they are hand-sewn on I’m not pleased at all with the look. The dress looks like a child’s Easter dress now and not an elegant ball gown.

After much thought, I believe that the problem is the facing. The dress has facing made of the same shiny, slippery material that is on the outside. Is there something I can do to avoid the childlike straps that ruin the look of my dress? Should I cut out most of the facing? Attach some other kind of material to the facing to keep it form sliding? The recital is January 31, so I need to fix the dress quickly. I just hate to wear it with those awful straps. I'll post pictures with the straps when I get some.

Thanks in advance for the help.
