I missed this thread first time around. It is great!!

I apparently duplicate more than I thought, also. Usually in different colours. Just off the top of my head, though, some that I'm aware of:

VC tube skirt (3 colours)
J. Crew linen top (3 colours)
GAP mesh sleeve sweater (2 colours)
BR turtleneck (2 colours)
BR no iron button up (2 colours)
CofH Racer jeans (2 colours)

I think those are my only ones apart from gear or undies, but I could be wrong.

My only true duplicates are
two gap t-shirts, one black and one striped
two tanks- one grey and one watermelon
sports tanks- blue and coral
I duplicate when I find a basic that is quality, flattering and at the right price point for me - in particular for layering items.

I used to be a mad duplicator.

ON ribbed undershirts. Got these years ago for .50 at grand opening of a store near me. I started out with 6. I wore 2 out. I wear these under the uniform all the time.

ON Henley tees. Same sale. I think they were $2. each. Used to have a third one in purple. Wear as undershirts. Looking to upgrade with more modern shirts.

Gap 1969 really straights. I wear these a lot to work.

I thought I was reformed, but

Ella Moss, love the fit on the tie dye, so I thought the black would be a workhorse. It is.

ON sweaters, they are for different capsules.

At least I'm putting more thought into my dups than wow that's a deal.

Gigi, that's a great point about duplicating things that are simple in design. Now that I look at my duplicates with that in mind, it applies to me, too.

Cathy, you reminded me -- I do have two kinds of skirts duplicated too! I forgot to look at skirts. The VC tube skirt (yes, I also got sucked into the buy-two-for-one -- in solid black, and black and grey stripe), and the Halogen seamed pencil skirt (again, solid black, and solid cobalt blue). Once again, very simple, timeless garments. They'll probably stay in my closet a long time, even if I don't wear them a lot.

I don't think I have any duplicates in my closet. None. I was considering buying a second Everlane v-neck but truth is, it's because I don't love the color of the one I have so I doubt I would actually keep both.

Perhaps this is a function of my old novelty over basics approach to wardrobe. Or maybe it's just because I keep a small wardrobe. I do consider buying duplicates with some regularity, but getting a completely different style and color always seems to win.

Interesting thread! Thanks for taking the time to take pix, Janet (and Deb too!). I'm a very visual person, so that really helps.

I don't duplicate a whole lot. I have:

- 2 pairs of VC booties, one in black and one in animal print
- 2 Loft ruffle long-sleeve t-shirts, one in ivory and one in eggplant
- 2 AT halter tops, one in coral and one in black
- 3 Loft peasant tees
- 2 BR tees, one in red and one in white

I have found that 3 is too many for me as far as duplicating goes. I am not happy that I duplicated the peasant tee so much. But live and learn!

I have found that I like duplicating only things that are very simple in design. The Loft ruffle tee is kind of pushing it in that regard. That was one of my first duplications when I started building my wardrobe, and I am not sure I would duplicate something like that now.

I have also discovered that when I duplicate, I like to have one light color and one dark color. That makes it easier for me to choose between the two—I like high-contrast dressing, so I just pick whatever duplicate item is the correct value (is that the right word?).

Another strategy I use when duplicating is to buy one item in a solid and one in a pattern. That way they feel very different. The VC booties are like that: one pair is solid black, while the other pair is leopard.

I have mixed feelings about duplicating. Overall, I prefer variety; but I am also very hard to fit in tops and need to accept that. I had decided no more duplicating at the start of this year, but I made an exception for the AT halter tops, and I am glad that I did. I see that I shouldn't cordon off duplicating but should just make sure I duplicate things that are very simple.

Thoughtful duplicator, I like that term! I think it makes sense to duplicate like you do, Janet, when you find something that fits well and are well-made.

I thought I had no duplicates (besides bras, underwear and socks) but a closer look at my wardrobe revealed the following:
- 2 VC tube skirts, different colors (got sucked into a "Buy 2 for xx" deal)
- 2 Splendid mixed-media shirts, different colors
- 3 Enza Costa long-sleeve tees, different colors

I don't really wear the first two items that much, so the duplication was probably unwarranted. But I like the cut of the tees a lot and made a point to search them out and duplicate.

Janet, very eye opening. Like you, all of these items are staying in the closet. Surprisingly, I wear most of them all of the time. I thought I could cull some, especially the f/w pieces but they were work horses last winter so they stay.

Deb, it's eye-opening, isn't it? Do you find all of your duplicates useful? Or are some orphans? Even my infrequently-worn ones are staying in my closet because 1) they fit well and are colors I have always worn, and 2) they are classic and well-made enough that they deserve to be kept around.

You duplicate much like I duplicate, Janet. I see nothing wrong with that approach! I fully admit that I do it a lot. I duplicate the same item/same colour as often as I do same item/different colour, actually. I do it mainly with tops. I think it's because I'm picky and I have a hard time finding tops I like, so if I get one that is perfect (even after having been washed a couple of times), I'll go back and get a second one. I do wear them both!

I am totally guilty of duplicating. I have multiple identical jeans and pencil skirts in almost every color. I also have blouses in multiple sizes - bigger sizes for tunics and smaller sizes for wearing with skirts and jackets.... I am trying not to duplicate as much anymore. My closet is about to burst!

I'm with Susie in doing duplicates just in basics. Tees and layer tanks mostly. I do have one Old Navy cardi I bought in 2 colors, but that's about it for 'real' clothes. Not even jeans. No shoes (beyond running shoes - gotta stick with what fits).
My BF is much like Susie's hubby - if he likes it he'll buy multiples, in different colors and even the same color. He calls this "Oprahfying". He heard somewhere that she buys backups of things she loves. Funny.

It sounds like you know what works well for you, Janet, and have duplicated pretty wisely.

My husband is the king of duplicating! He has duplicates in almost every category- running tops and shorts, polos, pants, button front shirts, shoes, etc. If he likes something he will buy it in multiple colors and many times more than one in the same color.

I have a few- a Fresh Produce sweatshirt in 4 colors, Eileen Fisher pants and knit tops in 2 colors each, Gap jeans, boyfriend jeans, KUT skinny jeans, layering tees and a couple of inexpensive knit tops for casual wear.

I definitely duplicate in basics. I have the same pair of sleep shorts in 5 colors, two colors of a lounge dress, 2 colors of the same sweater for lounge wear, and lots of duplicate underwear. I bought 6 pairs of identical trouser socks so they are easy to pair up when I do laundry!

I do not have any duplicates in dresses, shirts, sweaters, toppers, bags or shoes. Unless flip flops count...I have at least 6 pairs of Havaianas in different colors!

Inspired by Angie's blog post, I decided to quickly take a closer look at how I duplicate items in my wardrobe. I was surprised to find I duplicate more than I thought!

The good thing is that I'd say all of these were wise duplicates, although the dark red JP shirt doesn't see much wear. The fabrication says spring but the color says fall to me.

Otherwise, my duplicates tend to be classic pieces in flattering-to-me, versatile colors. My duplicate bottoms, in particular, are total workhorses!

1 Calvin Klein button front shirts (5+ years old)
2 AG sleeveless silk tops
3 Club Monaco tees
4 James Perse button-front shirts (eep!)
5 Equipment shirts
6 Brooks Bros shirts
7 more Equipment shirts
8 Anthro summer dresses
9 Anthro tees
10 Lululemon moto pants
11 Banana Republic jeans
12 DKNY cropped pants
13 Cole Haan sandals

Not pictured: AG Tomboy jeans (one pair in the wash), Paige Skyline skinnies, swimsuits or gear.

Do you have a true sense of how much you do this? I suspect it's easier to be fooled if you have a larger wardrobe...
