If you're on windows and want a slightly fancier option, you could try this little program from Donation Coder: http://www.donationcoder.com/S.....hotcaptor/

You can also easily do a screen capture on a Mac by opening the Preview app. Go to File-Take Screenshot (I'm no good at remembering Mac commands).

Sure, you can do it on the iPad and iPhone: Hold down the home button and the start button simultaneously, and the image stores itself in "camera pictures" automatically.

I highly recommend using a program like Jing from Tech Smith or Skitch (Mac only) for screenshots, they make screen capturing a lot easier, and you can choose whatever part of the screen you want. They are both freeware.

Jing: http://www.techsmith.com/jing.html
Skitch: http://skitch.com

A screen capture is handy if you are viewing an image on your screen that you want to save. Some of us were playing around with Burberry's "design a custom coat" feature earlier and wanted to share our final design with some of the other forum members. Once we had an image of the coat on the screen, a screen capture let us "capture" the image so we could post it in the thread.

I've used screen captures to save a Google map of the town in Hungary where my mother grew up. I then printed out a copy so she could see what the house she was born in looked like today. My sister and I also saved Polyvore images using screen captures instead of creating Polyvore accounts.

Basically anything you see on your computer monitor can be saved and/or printed.

Marley, a screen capture is a photographic image of whatever is currently visible on your computer's screen; the image can be stored and retrieved from your computer's memory.

The PrintSrn button makes Windows save a complete image of your screen in an internal, temporary file, so that is why MaryK uses the Paint program to retrieve the picture and save it as a regular, permanent file.

Apples use a three key command (you press and hold three keys simultaneously) to give you a crosshair icon so you can use your mouse to be more selective in what part of the screen you want to save and automatically saves the chosen section as a file on your desktop.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 use a "snipping' feature that operates much the same as the Apple keyboard command.

What is a screen capture? (Yes everyone - I'm actually asking this question - 'cuz I have NO idea what you all are talking about!)

ETA: Ok, so I googled it and watched a video of someone capturing the start menu of their computer. Why would I want to do that? What do you use this feature for????

On a Mac:

Hit Shift + Command + 4

A crosshairs cursor will appear. Drag the crosshairs to highlight the picture.

The picture is automatically saved to your desktop, titled "Screen Shot [date, time]."

ETA: Gaylene beat me to it!

Even easier with an Apple. Hold the Command, Shift, and 4 keys down simultaneously to get a gun sight icon on the screen. Drag the icon over the image you want to capture holding down your left mouse button. When you release the mouse button, you'll hear a click and the image will be saved to the desktop. If you want to change the format, open the image, and use File, Save As to select a different format like a JPEG.

You can do the same thing with Windows, but I can't for the life of me remember the keys you need to use.

ETA: Just realized that Vista and Windows 7 has a Snipit tool that does much the same thing

1. Click on to the round Windows logo in the lower left hand corner.
2. Click on All Programs.
3. Click on Accessories.
4. Select Snipping Tool.
5. The mouse pointer will change to a crosshair. Select any or all of the screen.
6. Immediate following, a window will show that will have your target rectangle inside of it. Click on File and then Save As to save your file.

For Windows:

1. There's a "print screen" button on your keyboard. It probably says "PrntScr." Get the picture on the screen the way you want it, and push that button. It will store the screen in your computer's memory.

2. Open your Paint program (it should be in "accessories"). Paste the screen capture into Paint, either by hitting ctrl-V or choosing "Paste" from the Edit menu.

3. Go to "Save As" in the File menu and save the file as a JPEG.

4. You can then open the JPEG file in your favorite photo program and edit it as you wish.
