Fantastic thoughts here.....I often think of statements as the thing that draws your attention relative to the background of the rest of your outfit. I am drawn to feminine/boho styles and my statements tend to be accessories rather than clothing, and coloured or shiny or embellished or patterned in some way....costume jewellry, sparkly sandals, shiny bag.

Isabel and Deb, your statements make perfect sense for your style.

*pondering this more......*

Very interesting question and very interesting responses :)

I always viewed a statement piece as the most eye catching piece of my outfit. For example, open black jacket, red blouse, black skirt, black tights, black boots. In this case, the red blouse would be my statement piece.

To me an essential is more classic and timeless. A statement piece might be trendier or more colorful.

I agree to most Rabbit said. To me, a statement piece has certain qualities that the essentials lack, with could be expressed in the fabric, pattern, color or details. I like my wardrobe to consist of at lead 20% statement pieces to avoid it being too boring. Some days, I'm more than happy wearing only essentials (jeans, v-neck sweater, sneakers, trench), but most of the time I need one piece that brings more life to the mix.

Examples of S's in my wardrobe are the red coat, black tall boots, black pleated drapey trousers, full skirts, patterned button downs. My E's are jeans, wool sweaters, v-neck tees, sneakers, dark blazer.

Interesting discussion, I agree with all of you!

I do have a few statement pieces from casual (coral fishnet sweater) to evening (kimono) to work (black and white window pane pants) to occasion wear (silver sparkly pumps)...

I am pretty good at hunting out statement pieces that I love and that suit me. I am not so good at finding and spending money on the essentials to support these pieces.

I am only starting to think about this, having read the blog posts:) I think there can be the obvious statement pieces like a fabulous, oversized necklace, a unique and stunning jacket etc. However because we don't all have the same style so I do think our statement pieces can be unique to ourselves.

Generally, I think of a statement piece as being something that can stand alone. It doesn't need much to support it. I had a scroll through some of Jenava's outfits as I recalled her wearing a few things that read to me as statemtent pieces. See #1 - #4. In this case the supporting garments are pretty simple, and the statement piece could be describes as being quite dramatic. In these four outfits, pattern is signifcant, along with colour and texture in #1. Design also factors.

In my own wardrobe, my 'statement' pieces are maybe a little more subdued, block colours and neutrals, and I think the design elements are what make them 'special'.

For example, I think the following in my wardrobe could be considered statement pieces.
#5 Draped grey sleeveless jacket
#6 Metalicus Plaza Drape Dress
#6/8 Metalcus Kahlo Jacket
#9 Nine West Pewter Ankle Boots
#10 Silver Collar Necklace

I generally prefer to wear something very simple and add one standout item (Statement piece), however there are some women (Anna for example) who can wear multiple 'statement' pieces together and look amazing, raising the question of how we all prefer to wear our statement pieces.

I think statement pieces are items that are usually supporting acts to essentials or will require great thought when worn together. You can wear multiple statment pieces at once, but the look will likely be very strong, bold, or ALGO. You can't just carelessly throw on a few statement pieces and expect the look to work, whereas I think you can expect that result with essentials.

I like what Rabbit and everyone said. I think statements need the rest of the pieces to work with them rather than essentials that try to work with lots of different things. And putting it that way I think there are also statement and essential personalities :-)!

Thank-you! It is an interesting process because their is more this one definition of what defines a statement piece. The EF poncho I bought at SSIF is a statement piece to me because it is totally different from what I normally wear and it us also a wildcard piece for this fall. What I am learning is that different pieces can take different slots in your wardrobe. The essentials versus statement pieces has been a great lesson for me.

I was actually thinking about this as I was grocery shopping today. LOL I think that many people would look at my "statement" items and shake their heads. Being a SAHM, my "statement" pieces are somewhat subdued and not very exciting , I suppose.

Right now, one of my statement pieces is my pair of Van sneakers. I love them. My wardrobe would work just fine without them - but they add a little oomph ( and right now it is the only shoe that I can wear as my toe heals ) . On the other hand, I am going to buy the sweater below:

http://www1.macys.com/shop/pro.....#038;Categ

Though it is not in my essentials capsule, it is also not a "statement" in my mind. So I don't know what it is. : ) Though other places ( like the Vivienne Files ) refer to these as "add-ons" or " expanders". This would be an expander piece for me. I think that I like this expression. An "expander " capsule....

I consider all my scarves and jewelry "statement". They add that little extra "je ne sais quois " that make me feel a little more interesting and they make me happy. Just like my sneakers. It is unexpected, in a subtle way. Which makes me think : the cashmere sweater is essential for me : V neck, cashmere - but the color is "statement", a surprise. I love berry colors but my essentials are denim, grey, black ( and a navy blazer - always ). Now, the very small and subtle things may not seem "surprising" or "interesting" to others, but they are to me. hahahahahha. I love looking at my sneakers and going, " Wow, I forget the great subtle print. I love it ! "

I hope that makes some sense.

Right now I'm wearing a black and white striped stretchy T with side ruching and big zippers holding it together at the shoulders. When I wear a topper, it functions as an Essential; blk&wh T: no big deal, right? But without a topper, the zippers and cut make it more memorable. Or maybe it's a Regular? If it didn't have the zippers, I would be more likely to repeat the wear more often with the same crowd.

I couldn't say it better than you, crutcher. My statement pieces vary. I have some statement jewelry, some statement pants, etc. I just try not to wear more than 1 statement piece at a time, as I am petite and can easily look OTT if I'm not careful. The funny thing is that while I had a fairly conservative upbringing and now work in a very casual but very conservative office, I know that conservative can be boring and stuffy. I try not to look that way, because that's not my personality. I like to express my individuality while still fitting in. It's like walking a tightrope, but I haven't offended anyone yet I don't think. And the way I'm dressed affects the way I feel, which is another reason I don't want to go around looking like I just went down to the dept. store and bought whatever was there. It takes more work to shop around and put together outfits, but in the end, I'm happy with what I have and with how I present myself to the world.

Essential is the cake...statement is the pink frosting with sprinkles...Essential is the regular pieces that you select...Statement is the eclectic, trendy, added on piece that the outfit could function without but oh, my it is so much more fun with...

For me it is something that is eye-catching due to color, shape, or texture or that has some element that is more unusual/more rarely seen on the street in your environment or at retail.

So a silver bootie might be statement, a black bootie might be essential

A pink coat might be statement, a gray coat could be essential

An alligator texture belt might be essential, an alligator texture on a sweatshirt would be statement.

A neutral cardigan that comes to your calves might be a statement, one in a usual length could be essential.

ETA: I think there might be a lot of 'regular' clothes as Tanya says that fall between these two poles. Tops in color but in a classic cut might be in this category, unless they are an unusual color.

How do you define a statement piece? It seems like everyone has a different idea of what constitutes a statement piece. As bj1111 andI were discussing today it a personal thing but are there similar traits? Just curious as to how you decide.
