Thanks ladies...I have sewn snaps between buttons at least once and it worked pretty well for a top. For a dress I can sew up some of the gappage in the lower area.

BC you may be on to something that I need to size up, although the next larger size will probably have armholes that are too big. I just tried the dress on again, put in some pins for the gappage areas, and sat down and looked in a mirror and it is pulling a bit across the hip area. I just ordered the next size up...will see how it fits....thanks for the reminder I tend to not always think this way...:-)

This is a big pet peeve for me...why can't manufacturers space buttons so that there is one at the bust line...not above and below ... grrr.

If it is a garment I wouldn't mind wearing a camisole/tank under, I wear that and leave the garment unbuttoned until after the problem area.

Otherwise...I don't buy the garment.

I don't buy it if it gaps too much. I just had a shirt dress sewn. I use fashion tape when there is only a small area of gapping. I never use a safety pin. They invariably pop open and poke me, and they don't hold well either. Finally, I wear something underneath that I don't mind showing off.

I have used fashion tape, when it's in an awkward area where you need it open to put on the garment and the gaping isn't the result of a lot of pressure. It works fine as long as you don't intentionally rip it open and closed again to much after placement. If I had patience maybe I'd do snaps, but I'm worried about stitches showing through.

I can't sew, so I use fashion tape for this problem--as well as for closing side pockets, hemming trousers to wear with different height heels and keeping bra straps in place.

My mom, who was a seamstress, used to sew in extra snaps or velcro closures in between the buttons that were already there. That way, there were no more gaps. The problem was poorly spaced buttons, not poor fit. If the fit is poor and there's gapping, you need to size up.

I use clear snaps on blouses. For a dress, I would stitch the portion you can get into without unfastening and use invisible snaps if needed up top.

Hmm..RobinF I hate that gapping look even if there is camouflage underneath...so I'll do something about it...but you have me thinking I could wear this over skinny jeans....another great idea! Thanks!

I have this issue with a denim shirtdress I recently got. I would stitch it but I think I may want to wear it open over jeans sometimes (I'm going to have to do Angie's trick of creating a capsule for it - maybe this weekend). So far I have done the same as Jenava and just worn a tank and slip under it and let it gap.

Thanks ladies. For this particular dress I will have to use a combination of methods. I can stitch up the areas between some of the lower snaps but have to leave the middle ones open so I can get into it ...so I'll probably add some snaps there.

I usually place a couple of strategic stitches when it's something I can slip on over my head. I've done the snap thing too. Pins are tricky but work in a pinch.

I use the stitch method. I love a shirtdress, and altho it may limit me to only using it as a dress --I have found this to be the best method for me. I can't stand the gaps--it makes me self conscious and I find I wear the dress much more often if I have this taken care of....I use a hand stitch method so that it is easy to remove if I change my mind. I stitch it on the far side of the placket: it doesn't show there.
In the past I tried pinning--got stuck too often, or it still gaped. I have also used jeneva's method-- a dark or color similar slip underneath.

I sew the whole darn thing up, usually up to the second or third button (which is where I wear my shirts open to anyway). this also fixes the problem of too loose buttonholes popping open at in opportune times.

Stitching seems the most viable, although likely the garment will creep up when you sit, and wrinkle.

I used to use the safety pin thing (pulling in just one or two threads of the top layer of fabric minimizs the indentation). and I wouldn't undo it when I took the blouse off.

Nowadays, I have this issue with a button front shirtdress. I just wear a cami and a slip in a color similar to the top and let them gape....

I just bought a summer dress with snaps down the front. It fits well, but when I sit down the spaces between the snaps gap out a bit. I personally hate this phenomenon, it's distracting and IMHO looks really sloppy. I know there are multiple ways to deal with this.

1. use fashion tape to close the gaps (I have some fashion tape but have not tried this myself)

2. sew small invisible snaps between the visible ones. I've done this and it's pretty tedious but works well.

3. use safety pins...not so great because it creates visible "dents" at each pin..I've done this one too

4. Stitch as much of the placket as possible closed permanently, leaving enough room to get in and out of the garment. I've done this on a sweater that had buttons down one side.

5. Any other suggestions?

What methods have been successful for you? THANKS!
