I take the right tie, pull it around my back to my left, take the left tie and pull around my back to my right, then tie in the front toward one side, in a square knot or bow. Heh it's not so comfy sitting in a hard pew at church with a knot at my back and child in my lap.

I don't have anything like this now, but my solutions in the past were like yours and Astrid's -- either a side knot (with tucked ends) or safety pinned shut so it was just like a flat band. It didn't look weird (I don't think).

You could try a flat buckle too, because that way you keep some of the visual interest provided by the bow tie.

Diane, I will try the necktie knot. Not sure how I would iron it though as it would be on my body at the time. I don't think I could get into the dresses if I pre-tied the belt (they both slip on over the head).

Rachy, I'm not sure I can picture that. How does it stay put with no knot? Do you have a photo/example?

You could also try tying them like a neck tie and ironing the knot flat,

I hadn't thought of snap fasteners! That's a great idea.

Astrid, I will try pinning it too. I think the snaps might be a better long term solution but I'd like to see what it looks like before committing to it. I worry a little bit that not having a knot or bow will make it look like it's undone...

Ooh err! Good point! What about snap fasteners then? Or a small loop and button?

Diane, I think Velcro would cause more problems than it would solve. I wouldn't want to run the risk of ruining my sweaters and jackets, not to mention my couch.

I see your frustration Diana. What about two small pieces of velcro on both bits of belt at the back and just lay on piece over the other for a flat effect?

Ok, kind of a bizarre and highly specific question, but an issue I've been having recently is that belts (self ties, mostly) that tie in the back are uncomfortable when I sit, as the knot/bow digs into my back.

I have gotten a couple of new dresses (see the finds) that have self ties. In recent history I've either ditched the tie altogether or replaced with a buckled belt, but for the new dresses I would prefer to use the self tie. (On the solid COS one, the tie is both integral to the style and can only be tied in back.)

I prefer to tie my self tie belts in the back because it's a cleaner line and I don't like extra stuff cluttering up my short waist in the front. Any suggestions for a knot or tie that doesn't make a big lump? My current solution is shift the knot to the side when I sit but it's kind of awkward and annoying to do that all the time.
