I have list of things I feel my wardrobe would benefit from which lives on my IPhone. I also keep a list of my measurements for online ordering.

I actually keep these same lists for DF's wardrobe & measurements as he hates to shop.

I think I am just frustrated with going slowly. I know it will be worth it in the long run as my style will still evolve as I go.

Time to do some serious thrifting I think.

You've gotten lots of good advice already.

A couple of things that have helped me is figuring out my style and reading "wardrobe basics" lists online. I know many don't like those lists, but I'm a list girl. Not everything on the lists are things I need, but they started the juices flowing... gave me ideas for things I could really use. I made my list of things I need/want, and am now working through the list piece by piece.

It takes a lot of time and focus! My biggest advice for now is to start keeping track of what you have and what you wear, and spend some time on YLF and other places that provide fashion inspiration.

Once you know what you have, wear, and like, you can start purging the things that you never wear and replacing the things that you wear but don't feel fab in. Posting pictures is VERY helpful, and I recommend posting photos on YLF of all of your purchases before cutting the tags so that you can be sure they fit and are flattering, and get styling advice. You can also post pictures of things you're not sure if you should keep to get input on them. It can be a slow process and it takes work, but it's so worth it! Good luck!

Londonkiwi, I will post some photos.

I think the biggest problem is that a few years ago I went out to clubs and parties a lot but since then I have met my DF and my lifestyle has changed. A lot of my clothes were appropriate as an 18yo party girl but as a (slightly) more mature 22yo they don't work. I've also settled into my body as an adult with hips & breasts.

I have always been good at cleaning out my wardrobe but I am hesitant to get rid of everything until I have got some new items in to replace them. I worry that I will actually have nothing to wear.

Training myself not to buy crap because it's cheap is a new thing for me as well. Harder than it sounds.

I wear a uniform to work so that's not really an issue. I would like a nice 3 piece suit but it's not a huge priority.

I will have a look at the getting started type posts.

I'm also on a student's budget and don't have much money to spare.

I think the most important thing is to think about what you want and really need. I say make a list of items you think you need most, then purchase the most important first. And if something isn't on the list, don't buy it.

Since I'm here I have only bought some boots (I wear them all the time now), a scarf and a hat. Boots were my most important item, because now I can wear all my skirts and dresses in the cold (I'm a skirt girl). What's most useful for your wardrobe? And I got a new skirt for my birthday and shortened another skirt and a dress.

Although the most important thing for me was my closet cleanup. Maybe you can do one, too? It helped me realize which item I want to buy next, if my budget allows it. At the moment I'm working almost only with stuff I had before YLF. And I feel much better about my outfits already, without buying new things.

You can naturally shop sale for money saving, but ONLY if you know what you want. I always tend to buy things I don't really need only because it's on sale. So for me it's better to have a little patience and wait before I purchase a slightly more expensive item, but then I have the right one.

I keep an eye out for sales. I also try to remix my clothes in lots of new outfits, wearing the same items in the same combinations gets boring to me but when I mix them up I feel like I have more clothes than I really do. Also, I try to purchase items that go with multiple other items I already have rather than having to purchase entire outfits that stand alone in my closet each time.

I stalk items on ebay and almost always find them in my size eventually.

I also regularly check sites that have stackable coupons- I got a silk sheath dress from Ann Taylor for $27 recently (originally $168) because they had 40% off all sale items + a 30% off coupon.

Can you identify which parts of your wardrobe need an overhaul? For example, I'm pretty happy with my work clothes capsule now but realised that my weekend capsule still needs some work.

I'm on a super tight budget at the moment. Luckily, I have a decent basic wardrobe at this point. There are lots of ways to stretch your dollars- thrift stores, outlets, ebay, clothing swaps, etc. If you have to keep to a strict budget, then one piece at a time- the most basic pieces at the beginning is the way that I would do it. Also make sure new purchases are good quality and versatile.

Hi

I think the key is to work out what you do really need or whether you can re-mix and just add the odd piece of clothing in. I bet you do have some pieces in your closet that don't need to be replaced at all. This is where posting outfit photos here can help.

There are also some experts on budget clothes finding and vintage shopping who will be able to answer any of your questions, plus Angie has some terrific where to start posts on her blog. Please don't think that all of us on here have large shopping budgets - not all of us do. What is here though is a fantastic community ready to help.

I operate on a student's budget - a lot of Kraft Dinner and potatoes - my rule is if it isn't at least 75% off, I can't buy it, no matter how fab it is. Although it's hard because sometimes I think some pieces are amazing...

I have been known to shift around the food budget to get something I am absolutely dying for at 50% off

I am on a fairly tight budget at the moment. Unfortunately this coincides with my wardrobe needing a serious overhaul.

Are others in this situation? How do you control the desire to go out & get everything you think you need?
