I reread your post and caught that you're taking iron sups. Low ferritin (storage) robs you of energy, brain power and memory, so make it a priority if you are running low. Let us know what works for you!

This thread came to mind this morning.

I was a little frazzled. One daughter was complaining about the toaster not being plugged in and another required my attention with her cooking her breakfast and I couldn't find my makeup!! So set out with just lipstick today.

30 m down the road I suspect that I had forgotten my running shoes to wear to the gym at lunchbreak. So I went back to get them. 100 m down the road again I realise I have forgotten my security card - but press on any way as I can borrow one for the day. As I approach my bus stop (7 minute walk) I realise that I have forgotten my handbag and therefore can't catch the bus.

So I walk home again, pick up the bag (which I'd left behind while getting the shoes) and security card and got my husband to get out of bed and drop me further down the highway because I couldn't afford any more walking time.

And yes, I was told I had a photographic memory as a child...

Oh boy, growing up I was notorious in my family for my memory. If I saw it or heard it, I remembered it point blank.

Now, not so much. Wow, does it ever get worse.

I write everything down. Everything. Not so much the day to day stuff, but anything that needs doing is written on my jumbo calendar. I consult it every.single.day.all.day. I tried going electronic but it fell by the wayside. I'm a list person through and through.

Funny though. I've never forgotten to eat.

I learned about the Bullet Journal method a couple of months ago, and I LOVE IT. I feel like my life is a whirlwind and I can't keep anything straight anymore, but the Bullet Journal makes me feel sane. I write everything down -- even book recommendations, packing lists, etc. I keep them on a page and list the page # on my index page. Everything I want to remember.

http://bulletjournal.com

I still use a digital calendar (google) for my appointments, and finally upgraded to a better one than the standard OSX and iOS one (Fantastical 2). It made a HUGE difference.

Just to clarify, I'm not miserable - just terribly chaotic and overwhelmed. My job requires a brain dump daily to delete all the information I've gotten, and everything else tends to get dumped with it. I am taking note of all these hints. Bringing extra vitamins and other stuff to work is an excellent idea!

I feel your pain! With two little kids I feel like the brain cells have been sucked right out of my head. The only thing that kind of helps me is to have definite routines and as little clutter as possible. For example my cell phone - it's plugged in next to my bed. When I leave my bedroom in the morning I unplug it, carry it downstairs and put it right in my purse (which is in my path out the door or I'd forget that too). If I vary in this, like look at it in the kitchen, I will forget it. Also, the more clutter that is around, the more confused I get. So I try to purge, purge, purge and keep spaces clear so that I see the important things. Like I said, this only works for me about 20% of the time. Now I'm going to go read all the responses and see what good advise you got.

Now that I'm working part time out of the house and part time in the house I keep extra things at the office - like an extra bottle of my vitamins, an extra toothbrush and toothpaste, stuff like that. I also duplicated my headset, keyboard and other items for my computer so I don't have to carry as much back and forth.

I also tend to use reminders (automated phone or computer), I write notes (keep a pen and notepad or at least paper on me a lot of time) and I try to stick to a routine as much as I can.

I read your earlier comment and I don't think the calendar is the elementary solution. Could it be that you are overwhelmed by all kinds of demands and as a consequence ignoring your needs? What actions could be helpful to carve out a tiny bit of space for yourself?

What do you need to do and what do you *want* to do? What can be outsourced? Where can you make shortcuts?

I know I need some time to reload, otherwise I get soo dysfunctional. My «medicine» is meditation. (Headspace is a great app, even for beginners and only take 10 min) And yoga and other training.

So sorry you're in this mess now. Hang in there.

I need to write down everything asap. Even stuff for next year.

Everything is written in two physical calendars - one for the family and one for work. I like paper because handwriting makes me remember better, both because of the writing itself and I can use colours (if I want) and the letters gets personal (though not neat).

I use post-it stickers a lot too. Especially if I'm not around the family calendar.

lyn67... I have a comic strip from the paper with a man and woman (parents) sitting on a coach with a thought bubble over their heads. The woman's thoughts range from "situation in Middle East" to "pack kids' lunches" and there were at least 20 things. The man's thought bubble just says "BEER". Maybe I need to be more like a guy.

I don't. I'm not nearly as organized as many here on this post. I wish I had these systems to keep me on track. I only just bought a wall calendar this past school year and I seem to be allergic to lists - I rarely make one (sometimes for grocery shopping) but never for packing, to do etc.

One thing I do do is to keep my keys, purse etc. in the same place all the time. I also have a system and place for my daughter's backpack.

I'm a teacher - I feel I should be more naturally organized.

FWIW, I think you've got too much going on in your life and maybe you're exhausted? My problem solving, memory and ability to just generally cope go right out the window when I'm underslept.

I agree you have memory overload. Is there anyway to make some of these things automatic so you don't have to remember? What about having multiples of stuff? Like have the iron supplements at home, in your purse, in your car, at work so whenever you remember they're there to take.

Not to sound too new-agey but ... I find stopping to just breathe - like really breathe - once during my morning routine helps me slow down, focus and be present. I also do this in the car on my way to work, at school in the middle of the day, again in the car. I can't really meditate but I find breathing really helpful ... when I remember ;)

I would say to hire a personal assistant but I AM a personal assistant and I'm so absent minded that my boss is constantly reminding me to remind her.... It has gotten a little out of hand. But I do set alarms on my iPhone for the really urgent things, and my husband puts sticky notes on the coffee pot (the one place he knows I will check) and I have a hook by the front door for my keys (because I lost them for a week once... and found them in my purse). And pets?! Ha! My son is lucky that HE gets fed... In all seriousness, though, if you can swing it, hiring someone even for a few hours a week might be a good way to go. Even if it is just to organize what needs to happen and set up the reminders/schedules so that you have those couple hours to decompress and not worry...

This seems to be the core of the problem: " I am so tired and have so many priorities pulling me in different directions"

* Are you getting enough sleep?
* What would help you begin to address all those competing priorities?

Oh, I am seriously considering getting either a chalkboard/whiteboard or a bulletin board to write down things like pay the bills, mail the rent check, take out recycling, water plants, etc. I'd probably put it in the kitchen since I am there every morning and night (and then I could also use it to write down weekly menus for dinner). The key is it has to be in a high traffic place that I see multiple times a day.

Right now I have a notepad stuck on my fridge door, mostly to write the shopping list on but I also write other notes on it. The only way I ever remember to put things on the list is if I write it down immediately upon using it up. Hence why it is on the fridge door. This holds true for pretty much everything actually. If I make a doctor's appointment, I have to put it in my phone that very second, otherwise I'll never remember to do it later. I also stick post-its to my bathroom mirror.

So I think the key for me is to have a convenient place to write down or otherwise note things on the to do list immediately available at all times. I guess if you keep your phone in your pocket at all times it would work.

I just bought a paper planner after years of trying to do everything digitally. I've missed the contemplation and brain flow, the slower process of handwriting, and drawing quick pics for tasks and goals. The planner itself will probably ride in the passenger seat of the car, my new personal assistant :)

So today I tried to keep track of what types of things I forget. So far:

To eat breakfast (more like I skipped it though I meant to eat it)
To change my shoes from slippers
To take a bill I meant to bring along and pay
To take my vitamin

I'm not sure an organizer would help with this type of thing - it's more a question of being organized. I am so tired and have so many priorities pulling me in different directions that it's hard to say "set aside this 10 minutes to do these fiddly little tasks" - there are animals to be walked and fed, friends to catch up with, bigger chores.

I need to declutter my brain! And somehow I'd like to be LESS dependent on my phone, not more so. I was just talking to someone about how my son doesn't know anyone's contact numbers anymore because they are all stored in our phones!

Thank you for all the ideas. Post-its may be my best bet for the way I function...

I tend to forget cookery related things, such as forgetting bread dough that I've put away to prove, or omitting to take something out of the freezer. I just use post it notes placed strategically, and they work well for me.
If you consistently forget to take something out with you when you leave the house, maybe a permanent check-list on or next to the door might work for you.

I have a calendar and I also use my phone for some things. But mostly I'm a list maker, on paper or post its. At home we have used a family calendar for everyday planning for years. Always the one below from Jako-o, it was the only one avaliable with six columns. Now that I'm no longer living at home the last column has been repurposed for keeping track of birthdays. Basically everything went into this thing - from regular music lessons to doctor appointments to trips. You name it. And after a certain age we were responsible to put our own stuff in there if we wanted to have someone there to drive us for example. If we forgot and there was no organization to make sure it all worked out it was our own fault. Worked pretty well (we also had a paper clip on the left to mark the current date and a pen on a string fixed to it so you didn't have to hunt down a writing implement first).

I miss my Filofax, but it's too much to lug around as Diana says with the oversized cell and all now. Using it tho seems to have helped my brain, even tho I've stopped. Still, I basically have always had a memory like a sieve. Every thing has to have a place and a routine associated with it... Which can be tough to get in place. For years I've taken my teeny tiny synthroid pill at night, altho they want you to take it in the morning, but I'm really really fuzzy headed in the morning. I'm trying to change that now and I'm afraid I'm messing it up...

Anyways, I have a checklist on the front door of all the things that I must have before I leave because of my esp. bad morning brain. And I stick post-its on my phone... I do so prefer hand writing to thumb typing. It's faster.

I have EVERY.THING posted on my outlook calendar. I even use it as my to-do list and post things as "events" on the day I need to do it and it gives me reminders and I can move it to the next day if I can't get to it. I have an electronic shopping list app that I share with my husband that we BOTH update as we need stuff and as we buy stuff.

I have given up on keeping separate lists on paper since I seem to ignore them. I have an electronic note pad on my iPhone that i jot things down as I encounter them each day...then transfer over to my calendar. I find the fewer places I have to manage, the easier it is to keep myself on track. There is no easy way to do it.

Paperwork is streamlined on my desk and I book time on my calendar each week to address it. I have a simple file system on my desk for papers in progress and a larger file system for things completed. I no longer have an "inbox" since that was a place I put things to die. I try and touch each piece of paper once maybe twice and deal with it rather than defer it. Nothing really gets more than a week behind with this system.

Like you, there is no way I can possibly remember everything so I really do count on my "systems" to help me. And I work the system and somehow manage to muddle along. Despite my chaotic life and lack of routine, I do try and build rituals into my day so I can keep something constant despite everything going sideways around me.
