What Shiny said. Throw things on the bed and look for interesting combinations. Have you tried pattern mixing? A patterned scarf is a good way to start. Maybe a floral with a striped shirt or pinstriped pants.

Such a great question, Ingunn. This is something I struggle with because I tend to be on the conservative and classic side of things which certainly could benefit from some "shaking" up. I'm finding if my outfit of mostly classic or basic pieces has a pop of something trendy or modern, that helps. Having fun or modern shoes has been a big boost for my wardrobe.

Thanks Rachylou. :o) The light was bad, so the photo doesn't do the colours justice. Both the pants and the sweater are vibrant colours.

Great question, Ingunn! I have been having the same struggle, and I love all the suggestions here. I am working on adding colors to my wardrobe. I have added belts and shoes in red and they make a big difference when I am wearing an otherwise pretty neutrally colored outfit.

I've been trying almost all the tricks listed, with a couple of exceptions. But to shake things up, the best thing is to take a little time and add the things you think are impossible. I've been amazed at how often combinations I never would have considered work, and really well too!

Yesterday, in my playing, I put a teal green (I don't know what to call the colour. Think teal blue, but tilted to the green side of the spectrum) cardigan on over my rust pants. Way over the top for conservative me. But my white summer scarf is like a magic wand: the floral print has three colours in it that are perfect chameleons: a red that will go with every red that's out there, and almost slate blue that pretends to be any shade of blue, and a khaki colour that calls out to all the browns. Tied that around my neck and it pulled them together.

I didn't wear it, because it wasn't weather-appropriate, but it really amazed me. I've also played with belts, and earrings. The point is to break your own rules, and then find a way to make it work.

That sounds like a recipe for a confident style, CocoLion and cciele. Very inspiring!

It's like Angie's last outfit, right? No jewelry, only a statement top and a belt for interest. Se was gorgeous. I wish I could manage something similar. but I'm realizing that my wardrobe consists of too many basics. I need statement pieces!

Great question! It made me realize that I don't do much with accessories like jewelry, watches, and scarves. Instead I find that I wear at least one statement, or starring, piece of clothing. They add visual interest through pattern, color, or cut. Sometimes though my footwear plays the starring role.

I find an oversized top instantly makes my outfit look more modern. If that is not an option, I go for jewelry, bag and footwear. Never fail to add that extra something with those three.

Alaskagirl, you are right! And so ahead of me regarding interesting essentials! I think accessories are great, but some days they are just not what i need.

Shabbychic, I so hear you. It sounds so right. But how do you define what's truly "you"?

Rachylou, that's very smart! I have a color wheel somewhere, and it is a very nifty tool. I used it when I made quilts a decade ago.

Today I've looked to the color wheel and thrown in the complement (sp?) color to the dominant colour I'm wearing. My sweater is mint green, so I threw on a pair of red shoes that also happen to be suede (so adding a little texture).

I agree with others, for basic outfits it's all in the accessories: jewelry, belts, printed or colored footwear, scarves, any one of these (or more) can change up the vibe of an outfit.

Thanks for all these valuable answers! I guess we all have a rather bland day every now and then, and it's aways interesting to hear how you cope with the boredom of routine. I think that's part of my problem. I crave variety, variety, variety, and I tend to overanalyze a little. That's when I need those magic tricks of yours:)

Shiny, you are right. Playing in my closet is a very good solution. I think the combination I put on today was wee too conservative for my taste, although I love modern classic style. When in a rush, it's not always obvious how to change things either.

When I have a day like this, I know it's time to shake things up. When you get home, play around in your closet and pair items you'd never considered pairing together, with the items you're wearing now. Give yourself permission to pair the most outrageous combos, the "oh this would never go with that" combos. In other words maybe it's not an accessory or shoes that needs swapping out. Maybe swapping out the top for a different one, or the pants for a skirt, or the blazer for a different blazer will make all the difference? Especially since you're using the words "predictable" and "matchy matchy." Break that outfit up and try something completely unexpected!

Ruth and Rute, I agree, it works well to add accessories or fun shoes most of the time. Today I wear red wedges, but still I miss something to pull the entire outfit together. I guess I find it a lot easier to go matchy-matchy, but that's not what I really want.

Deborah, this sounds like a good strategy. Something that adds a personal statement, and visually tying the outfit together.

Ingunn for me it's often the last thing I add to my outfit upon getting dressed. For example earlier in the week I wore a striped skirt, black hi low top, fitted leather blazer and red shoes...I added a large pendant with a Japanese red and black print, creating a subtle and unexpected pattern mix. Sometimes if I am not sure, I do take a moment and ask myself what Angie might do!

Irene, I don't have a very formal dresscode at my workplace, so I can do pretty much what I like. I do feel, though, that smart casual is most appropriate. Today a fun watch would have made a diffeence - good idea!

Traci, it sounds like you have the formula I'm thinking of: a few garments that make you feel like "you" to add some personality to your outfit. I guess what bothered me today really was a lack of sensing "me" in my ensemble.

I surely do like scarves, and very often I add one. I also like jewelry, but my selection is rather small. Today I tried several necklaces, but they didn't work. Somehow they only made it worse! Strange.

I have a few wardrobe workhorses that have a twist built in, like my army green linen moto jacket, or a pair of over sized hand wrapped gold wire hoops. Even just throwing my jean jacket on top of an outfit makes it feel more right. These things make me feel put together with the tiniest hint of an edge.

Depends on your limitations. Your outfits sounds work-appropriate to me, are you allowed to really go crazier? Maybe a scarf would help? Some necklace, earrings, bracelet? Fun watch? Cool do? Fun bag?
