I like a sharp shoulder, but because I am 5’3” need to be careful not to become overwhelmed. I think what I’m saying is yes within reason…

I like the look of a strong, sharp shoulder. As with other body parts, a little padding, support or shaping can enhance what we already have. I have strong shoulders and need to be careful with anything that adds width: pads, puffs, pleats or ruffles. Otherwise I look like I’m ready to join the football team.

I am broad shouldered- but wear 80%of the time a kind of very thin or a moderate shoulder pads to balance with sloppy shoulder line (the simple half eliptic ones)-it's all up to your needs-but a pad too big, too thick can go wrong easily, indeed. I don't liketThe one's Janet linked (for raglan sleeves) they are expanding past my shoulder line in the width-which I don't need.

So glad you asked! As it happened I just picked up a strong shoulder experiment yesterday at the consignment shop where I do most of my selling. I have a couple of those t shirts with pads and love the idea of putting them under my sweaters (maybe a Trinny idea?). Yes I am short but I still like the effect.

I love a strong shoulder! I have broad square shoulders so I already have a strong shoulder line naturally, so I don't usually go bigger. But I do have some blazers with lightly-padded shoulders that I like a lot. I think it's really a matter of personal preference and doing what looks/feels right for your particular body shape and style goals.

I do appreciate a sharp shoulder or some subtle padding, but an exaggerated shoulder doesn't feel quite right to me. I bought a couple of padded shoulder tees from Mango several years ago, but they're in the Spring clothing donation bag now.

I do like a defined and sharp shoulder line . I wouldn’t go so far to say exaggerated but some padding is good . It helps take the focus off my chest and balances the silhouette .

I like the look quite a bit. However, since I have square broad-ish shoulders I would wear only subtle versions of it. I have a couple of items, like the vest with the extended shoulder line that also has a little pads, that I think work on me.

I think it's a matter of degree. I have a number of blazers that have a sewn in shoulder pad - small to medium for shape and I think it's very flattering. I'm not a big person and the exaggerated shoulder pads that you've shown would not be something I wear. I think it all depends on the article, balance and degree. I love them when done subtly for structure but I would not wear this exaggerated shape. I don't object to it and think it can look cool, it's just not me.

I’ll confess part of my issue is that I have uneven shoulders. Yay scoliosis. Shoulder pads can help even out my asymmetry a little.

The shoulder pads I found are a little more rounded than I would prefer, but they’re ok. They have little Velcro tabs that close around a bra strap or tank top/cami strap. https://a.co/d/8Sslqdv

Mmm,l watch Trinny too. She’s great but very fashion-y.l personally don’t have the lifestyle for her looks.l do think that the oversized shoulder/sleeve thing has become quite extreme but l can appreciate a well structured blazer. As always it depends on one’s own body type.If l were a pear with very sloping shoulders a shoulder pad might be just the ticket!

I actually don't mind the look of the sleeveless versions, or jackets like Suz posted though.

Yes I have noticed trinnys fondness for them. I tried one, a little sleeveless tank with shoulder pads. To be honest, I couldn’t quite get used to it. It wasn’t terrible…. But I just didn’t find it all that great.
The oversized padded blazers we are seeing at the moment seem to make me look short and bulky. Perhaps I will adjust to the idea; I have a feeling shoulder pads will be around for a while now….

Cee and nemosmom, too funny!

It’s all about proportion isn’t it. Relation to head (short hair can make mine look small) or hips. Or relationship to other layers. Trinny often layers hers under sweaters to give them structure. But you definitely want to avoid a padded tee plus a padded jacket!

Janet, can u share a link to the removable pads? How do they attach to garments?

I like a sharp shoulder. That's a bit different, I think. (My tuxedo blazer, below). My shoulders are not broad -- but they are square. And I'm 5'4." A truly exaggerated shoulder is typically too much on me. I wore some in the 80s and agree with you -- in retrospect, they made me look squat. But this type of jacket, with a sharp shoulder line, can work as "my" version of an exaggerated one. Ditto what Brooklyn said. I like tops with sleeves like the ones she shows. They are not always easy to locate.

It’s quite an exaggerated, fashiony look. I like it now but in the beginning I had something of a “bad 80s” aversion to t-shirts with shoulder pads. But now I think it looks modern and interesting. It makes your waist look slimmer and your posture look better (as Trinny says). That said, I don’t tend to wear shoulder pads myself because I have broad shoulders already. I wear extended shoulder tops (no shoulder pads) that give a similar vibe.

I think it gets tricky if you want to wear a jacket or coat that has shoulder pads too.

Nope, it is not for me. Wide shoulders make my figure more IT and I don’t like that. I wore shoulder pads in my 20s and enjoyed it but don’t want to repeat.
