I forgot the most important question of all. Should they be associated with a particular federation in the US, and what is it called? I know how important that is when it comes to any other personal service.

Oh, and I live in the US, if that matters when it comes to terminology.

This is a weird question, but what do the better ones most commonly call themselves? Is it "Personal dresser", "style consultant" or something else ? That will help me a lot when I research this. I know from looking into this a while ago that "image consultant" doesn't yield very good results, but maybe I didn't look hard enough.

I have no experience with this Plush, but I think you can analogize to hiring a stylist or make-up artist (or accountant, or lawyer, or any other personal service purveyor)

First, you'll need to do a little back up research. Is this a person with a background in the industry--in some way--or is this just someone who likes clothes and dressing people, but has little to no experience otherwise? Get references if you can. How have other people liked her?

Second, do you like the way the person looks? The ultimate warning sign for me whenever I am looking for advice on make-up or hair is whether I like the make-up and/or hair of the stylist/adviser. I do not even ask for help from someone who has bright blue eye shadow, caked on mascara, tons of blush, and a facial skin color 5 shades darker than her neck. I like natural, and that person probably would not quite understand "natural." (And this is also from experience, where the interpretation of "natural" varied greatly between me and her). So for a shopper, do you like how she carries herself and her sense of style? It might not be yours (i.e. you might be boho, she might be urban) but do you like her style?

Finally, you need to meet with her. Do you get along? Does she respect your own style and your own personality, or will she impose her own ideas of right and wrong on you? If you do not feel comfortable with her, do not waste your money.

Just my two cents.

You both made good points about the difference between a personal shopper and a personal dresser, and that's why I definitely want to hire someone. I already expected to have to pay a few thousand for someone who really knows what they're doing (but 6000 may be a little TOO much). What I really want to know is how to find a good one. How can I avoid wasting my money on someone who's not very good.

I should add that my husband and mother-in-law made a surprise appointment for me at one of the department stores nearby for a birthday present. It was a lovely surprise, and we had a great time. Unfortunately, whereas someone like Angie would spend a significant amount time learning about your body type and personality, this lady just made assumptions about my style based on my career and age. First she presented me with very traditional and classic pieces, which were OK, but not really me. Then she thought that maybe I had a totally funky streak (short hair, nose ring), so she started bringing me crazy clothes. Neither time did she get it right. That's the price you pay (nothing), I suppose.

Plush, you can also go to a nice department store like Nordstrom's. They have people trained to help your wardrobe. It isn't the same as hiring someone to help with a complete makeover (who would look through your closet, first), but they are generally free. I also know that some smaller stores, like JCrew, offer personal dressing services, as well.

There is no set rate. Prices and packages differ. Some charge $350 for a makeover, whereas other charge $6000.
