I think it's usually a spam thing. On some forums people get really bent out of shape when someone revives an old thread by mistakenly replying to spam or a thread that gets revived in this way, but I can't see what the fuss is about. Especially if it's just a continuing discussion about something that is still relevant.

I think sometimes it is done by accident. Why I first joined I wasn't sure how things worked around here and on a forum in general and probably did a search on commented on an old thread. And when I first started here I did read back through years of posts on topics that were of interest. There are a lot of unwritten rules on the forum that new users have to figure out and it takes time so it is bound to happen from time to time unless there is something implemented to prevent it.

Sometimes I catch it because I know the one who started the thread isn't active any longer. But I don't really look at the dates either. I had a few of my old threads revived, either by new members or spammers and I always find it slightly awkward if I have to reply to my commenters, no I don't want to spend money on that right now, no I don't own these pants anymore etc. Those people put some effort into answering and most of the time it isn't even relevant. And even if the topic is more general - I think starting a new thread and linking to the old one is definitely preferable.

OK, this is just a very personal feeling, but I'm not a huge fan of reviving threads that are over a year old. I think it's great, though, when a new member re-sparks an old thread by starting a new conversation and providing a link to the old thread that inspired her.

Two reasons for my feelings: First, old threads are often revived by spanners whose spam is immediately deleted. Once the thread lands on the front page, though, it's indistinguishable from new threads unless we pay close attention to the dates, which most of us probably don't. That leads to helpful responses being offered to people who are no longer on the forum or whose "problem" is no longer in existence--thus confusing everyone.

Secondly, I think it's somehow bad manners to revive a thread when the author, and many of the respondents, may have chosen to leave the forum--or if the circumstances under which questions and comments were made have changed. I just think it's safer, and sometimes more tactful, to re-introduce on a fresh note.

But these are exclusively my feelings and may not be shared by others. I know Angie and Greg have chosen to leave all threads active, and, as administrators, they set the rules. So I don't think you are violating any etiquette by reviving old threads, Angela.

My question is this: Is it proper forum etiquette to post to an older thread thus reviving it, or should a new thread be started? I often search the archives and find very interesting threads but wasn't sure about reviving them or not. Just curious.

Old threads come through in search engines - like google - and people can still comment on them, which means that they reappear on the front page of the forum.

I think more often than not it's a spammer who initially revives the thread, then real posters see it on the front page and reply. It gets confusing because usually the spam gets removed fairly quickly but the thread now has legitimate new comments so it stays on the front page.

Yeah - it's easy to find old threads using a good search, or the search feature on ylf. I think it's fairly common that a thread revival is done by a spam comment too.

I've been wondering this for awhile, thought I'd ask!

There is one open now on the first page that was started 2 years ago. I can see that once one is revived, most people won't look at origin date and will comment on it like it is new, and off it goes. But how does it get even found in the first place? Surely no one is reading back through 2 years of threads?? Is there a subject list or search function on the forum that I haven't found yet?
