To be perfectly honest, my home look and going out look have been almost the same. But I have been working very hard to wear makeup most days, wear nice outfits and accessorize them even if I am staying home. Sometimes the only place I go to is school to pick up my kids. I do spend the morning in workout gear since I hit the gym or run once all the kids are out the door or I take the twins with me. Once home I shower and get dressed and then it is almost noon.

Today is an at home day so I am in a long t-shirt, cami and leggings. But tonight is date night and I plan on changing into something nicer.

I had to chuckle at Ceit's comment as I too have found my clothes with spots and strange things on them (i.e. yogurt) once I am out of the house.

I'm reading this thread with great interest. Usually there are several days/week that I only leave the house to get a drink from Sonic. I love the formulas I've read about here, but I'm not very comfortable working on projects around the house with jeans, shirt, jacket, etc. However, in case someone comes to the door & just because I prefer looking somewhat pulled together, I don't know what to wear on my at-home days.

It's interesting to see what other YLFer's wear on at-home days.

I am so short that most of my street wear is hemmed for at least a 2 inch heel. At home, I am generally barefoot so I won't stay in those clothes for that reason. My at home clothes are yoga pants or athletic shorts. I really should step it up a bit for my sweetheart.

I am loving this thread!
I dress for the office 4 days a week, have fun with casual Friday, and will also pick out a nice casual outfit if I've got weekend plans. Which, homebody that I am, I usually don't!
As soon as I get home, I change out of my work clothes and into my house clothes. I read a lovely book one time (maybe Wear More Cashmere?) that inspired me to have really soft and lovely lounge clothes and kimono style robes. After all, if I'm spending all my home time lounging, it should be something sublime.

I dress casual most every day but I do change up things slightly if I'm going to eat or to the bank or even just grocery shopping. I'll be much more likely to wear a nicer blouse with my daily jeans or shorts, I'll put on jewelry. A bra. lol. I def. put on makeup if I'm leaving the house but I wear very natural makeup so it's not a huge departure. I stay barefoot in my house so I obviously put on shoes.

When I'm going out more special say to a party, dinner or some event I will usually up it just a few steps more. Maybe wear black ponte pants. The only time I actually dress "up" totally is when I have an important business meeting or business type event - then I will wear nice pants, a blazer, etc. I own a couple of dresses and skirts but never seem to wear them. I keep them "just in case" I suppose because I hate last minute shopping for a special occasion.

I only wear PJ type loungwear after my shower before bed. Loungewear is not my favorite clothing category. I've tried buying "better" loungewear but it still isn't for me.

My only difference at home is I will usually swap out a woven shirt or a delicate shirt for a T or other knitted shirt, or pop a long sweater over and if I have nice/black trousers on I will hang those up right away to minimise the cat hair situation.

Other than that, my work wardrobe closely shadows my home wardrobe. I can't tell you how many times I have gone to work and realised that my 15 month old son has slimed my shoulder or my 3 year old daughter wiped her nose on my leg when she was giving me a goodbye hug in the morning!

My dressing style while at home and going out are polar opposites, so much so that you wouldn't recognise me if you saw one avatar and then met me later on in another! Since it's just my husband and me at home with no guests visiting most of the time (I call it city living ), I'm in tiny shorts and a t-shirt or hoodie with hair in a bun the entire day! I dress up a bit by upgrading to a skirt in the evenings when my husband gets home from work :)..While going out, I'm in a pretty dress or pencil skirt, blouse, fitted jacket and my favorite mid heeled shoes or booties. It has to be prim and proper, color coordinated and everything with the right earrings too! I cannot be under dressed when outside as it makes me feel frumpy, and cannot be dressed up at home because I love my shorts too much!

I have been striving for a few years now to bring my two wardrobes together.
It is one of my main closet goals. Closet schizophrenia was something I felt terribly uncomfortable with.

And now, I have reached a point where I may say I am starting to be satisfied.

I work both from home and outside, part-time.

I have found the solution for me is to wear a "base" that I can keep on throughout the day; then when I go out I adjust with another item and a few accessories.

I find it important not to wear pajamas or work-out gear during the day. I did for some years, and it wasn't the best idea. IMO it's depression-conducive. Plus others get used seeing you like this which is not the best example not the best message.

In my climate, it is trickier to keep the same clothes completely once inside. With central heating, there is a great difference between the temperature outside and the one inside, so some layers must go. Also, mushy, humid streets often mean dirty/wet items that must be removed once inside. In this case a "base" consisting of woollen opaque tights and a close-to-the-body thin long-sleeve top in a similar colour is the best. Then I can interchange tunic, dresses, skirts or pants over them. Once inside, I switch the toppers to a long cardi or a comfy knit dress over that "base".

Another great "base" is my long Lululemon underpants
http://shop.lululemon.com/prod.....cawwearit5
worn with a cute cami. I then layer a nice, rear-end-covering cardi (not a tired old thing). This is a great solution for Canada as sometimes our feet may get wet or cold and we need to change only the socks when we come home.

This way of dressing meant for me to invest in fashion items that were worn outdoors: jackets, coats, boots, scarves, hats, umbrellas, handbags etc. In Eastern Canada's climate, it is essential. Most interactions, most of the year, take place with you wearing your coat/raincoat over whatever else you are wearing. Paying attention to these outer layers makes a huge difference.

When I dress professionally, either in my place or when I go out, I "adjust" the base with the situation in mind. Some settings - even professional ones - are more relaxed; others require more formal wear. In any case, I just lay the "outer" layer on my bed when I come home and replace it with something for inside. If I must leave again, I just change again. Sounds complicated but in fact it is more simple that way for me.

I recently transitioned from five-day-a-week professional attire to full-time at-home status. The challenge has been to find something in between Old Navy velour loungewear, which is what I used to change into as soon as I got home from work, and pencil skirts with silk tops and jewelry.

I think I'm doing an okay job of not sinking into full-time gear mode, mainly with the help of Angie's recent formulas (skinny jeans with blouse, jacket, and flats; black skinnies with Converse). The biggest difference for me is that "going out" often involves more of a heel, whereas staying home never does.

I'm very dressy during the day (suits, dresses), so when I'm home I'm usually in jeans or lounge pants. And yeah, I'm in pjs a fair amount. I spend most of my shopping time and money on work clothes, so I could definitely stand to improve my loungewear.

I am a little like MaryK - I have specific ideas around what I wear for certain activities. But in general, during the week when I get home from work, I change as soon as I get home and throw on whatever is close by. And that can occasionally be a fairly crazy variety of items - yesterday it was black leggings, the white top I wore to work, a grey chunky sweater and pink cashmere socks I found in my drawer. It's all I had the energy for!

This usually only happens when I come home from work. If I am on holidays or it's Saturday, I am usually in a nice casual outfit of jeans, graphic tee and sweater. All of those years of following the Flylady website and the morning routine of getting dressed every morning has stuck with me and I generally feel better when I'm dressed in something nice at home. Unless I've just come home from work and I'm exhausted!

I am almost always at home, wearing comfy patched up jeans, slippers, and some kind of warm, comfy top. A few weeks ago I decided to upgrade my "house wear" and bought two cotton sweaters I found on mega-sale and a new plain fleece jacket. These have replaced a couple of very badly faded and old zip-up cardigans, my old bobbly fleece, and various other faded old long-sleeved t-shirts.

I'm still pretty casual when I go out but since I started reading YLF I do make some sort of effort most of the time. Well, I would never have worn the faded sweaters and patched jeans out in public, but I might not have put any effort into coordinating some kind of outfit. If I'm meeting someone I will dress much more smartly.

I've started wearing jersey dresses as lounge wear.

Most of the time for both work and play I'm casual to smart casual. For me, that's almost exclusively pants. I have a bunch of jersey dresses that just weren't getting worn and I decided to turn some of them into hang-out wear. When I get home I change into one if I'm not going out later. I love them for this. I'm comfortable and don't feel like a slob. They are easy for me to find at a discount price.

Today''s dress I bought at Ross for about 8 bucks, I can even hang out on the balcony in it.

I think it's funny that I rarely wear dresses in public but I wear them all the time at home.

All my "outside" looks are totally different from each other (e.g., errands, work, going out).

My home look and going out look are one and the same. I spent a few uncomfortable fashion desert years in too-small jeans and too-tight yoga pants (as I expanded) and then another year in which I pretty much lived in workout gear. And then I decided, enough is enough! I am actually WORKING at home, so I am going to treat myself like someone who is working and "adonize" myself for the busy day ahead.

Mind you, by most people's standards I am still very casual. The idea is to wear clothes that are as comfortable as loungewear and as good-looking as workwear. It's only recently that I've realized what a tall order that really is, and recognized why building my ideal wardrobe is going to be a time consuming process.

And I still distinguish between days when I stay home (apart from a workout) and days when I go out to lunch, go to an appointment, go out to dinner, go shopping, etc.

I've learned that on at home days I am much more likely to:

Wear jeans or shorts or other comfortable pants
Wear a knit top
Wear a cardigan if it is cold

On "going out" days I am much more likely to:

Wear a skirt or dress
Wear a jacket
Wear a woven top

So there ARE subtle differences in the looks I will choose, and knowing this helps me determine how many skirts it makes sense to buy, for example.

I still haven't worked out the ideal numbers....and it's not an exact science, because I also have an "appearances" capsule, which is separate but overlapping with my at home capsule. It includes the same jeans, skirts, jackets, shirts...but also adds other items that I would rarely wear except perhaps for a date night.

I am one of those gals who can't wait to come home from work, take off my work clothes and get into loungewear! I often run after work, so I'll change into my workout gear, go for my run, shower and then get into my loungewear. It's taken me quite a while to begin to build up a casual wardrobe that is a step up from loungewear for those days on the weekends when I'm not going anywhere. I'm getting there! But I spend the vast majority of my time either dressed up for work or in what I'm wearing right now - comfy leggings, with an oversized sweatshirt and slippers.

To hubby's dismay, at home I am generally in PJs. On work days I'll stay in my normal clothing for most of the night (it takes a lot of effort to not change right away, I must admit) and then change an hour or two before bed, but on the weekend if I'm not going out I stay in PJs all day; if I DO run out, I will always put on normal clothing. I really should get nicer "lounge" wear though 0:)

I only work part time, and if what I am wearing is dry clean only, I definitely change as soon as I get home! And in general regardless of where I've been and since my feet are very fussy, as soon as I get inside I almost always change into my wear-only-in-the-house fake croc hand-me-down slippers. They are ugly as sin, but never hurt anywhere and give my feet the relief they need. Otherwise, I try to look good enough to run out to the store and not like a *before* What Not to Wear example.

My at home and office looks intersect at the point of my skinnies, chucks, boots, and this year's Zella jacket. They diverge outside of that. I wear blouses, heels and slacks at the office and only at the office. At home, I get a bit kooky with my miniskirt aprons and jersey gauchos. I also wear more dresses and skirts when home. My sweaters are separated by home and office too.

I should note that by "at home" I just mean not going to the office. I don't have any house clothes. I do have one night shift and one pair of bunny feet jammies.

I have a work uniform shirt and wear my own pants. They want the pants to be plain so I have separate pants for work. I get dressed everyday in street clothes when not working. I usually change into loungewear after going to the gym unless I go early.

What a great question! I'm really finding that my work wardrobe and weekend wardrobe have become one - both are made up of button down shirts, sweaters, jeans. I try to dress it up more with nice shoes and blazers for work, but I don't really have to change when I come home. This is a big change from a year ago, when I often wore skirts and tights to work and couldn't wait to get home and get them off, and I had a separate wardrobe for nannying and hanging out at home in, which was sloppy and depressing. Eventually, I hope to explore some different looks to elevate my style and maybe my wardrobes will separate again, but right now it's really nice being able to teach, go to meetings, walk the dog and meet friends out without having to change clothes!

Ha ha! Not at all Mary, it's awesome as far as I'm concerned ;)
I think part of my 'complex' when I'm off work here is very much the same. If I sit in the house in loungewear day after day, when the heck am I EVER going to get to wear my stuff??

Mo, it's not that I object to running to the store in something in which I would piddle around the house. It's more that I have relatively few opportunities to wear my cute casual outfits, and a trip to the grocery store provides such an opportunity. So I hate to waste it on my around-the-house clothes.

That's a little mental, I know!

I have street clothes and home clothes, and they don't mix often. Unless I am just home for a brief period before going out again, I always change into loungewear the minute I walk in the door. I also never wear shoes in the house. One reason is because I cook, do dishes, etc, regularly and I don't like to get smells and splatters on my nice clothes.

I am lucky that I can wear pretty much whatever I want at work (although there are some things I don't feel comfortable in at work, such as short shorts or really formal/businessy wear). I wear the short shorts on weekends though, and I don't own much in the way of business formal.

Most of my loungewear is demoted comfy street clothes in any case (my faves are old jersey dresses) although I do have some yoga pants, etc that have never seen the outside world. =P I would say 90%+ of my wardrobe is street clothes since I like variety in my see-the-world outfits and don't like to repeat too often. Plus my outfits tend to have a lot of components, layers, etc. Loungewear on the other hand is all about comfort - I could (and do) wear the same simple thing all week and be perfectly happy.

So, Mary, you wouldn't say, piddle around the house on a Saturday in the same thing you would wear out to the grocery store Saturday afternoon? I would (hee hee) but just add shoes and a bracelet or something

On the weekends I get dressed in something fun/casual if I'm going to leave the house at all, even if it's just to run to Target or whatever.

I stop at the gym most days after work and generally leave my (nasty, sweaty -- I know, I know!) gym clothes on until bedtime. On the non-gym workdays I will change into cute loungewear when I get home.

I love to dress up in either "dressy" or "smart casual" outfits for going out, either on the weekend or after work. I guess I slice and dice my outfits pretty fine because I definitely draw distinctions among, for example, "out to lunch," "out for a casual dinner," "out for a nice dinner," "going to church," "going to the movies," and so on.

But I'd say the majority of the time I am either in my workwear or my gymwear.
