There's more to your skin than just your face! :-)
While my facial skin was always oily but clear until my 40s, my body skin has always been extremely dry, even scaly. Since moving to the high desert in 2012, it's been a constant battle to avoid the tips of my fingers and toes cracking open, especially in winter. Here's some of what I've learned:
For dry hands and feet, look for urea in the ingredient list. Some easy-to-find brands are Eucerin, Neutrogena and Gold Bond.
Slather on cuticle cream every night on each finger tip at least as far as your first knuckle. I've been using Burt's Bees version for the last 3 winters, and the incidence of fingertip cracks has been greatly reduced.
Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula body creams/lotions offer a high bang-for-buck moisturizing function.
If you have contact dermatitis, remember that just because it comes from a plant, doesn't make it safe for sensitive skin. I have to be very careful with products that contain aloe vera, chamomile and other so-called "organic", "natural", "botanic" ingredients.

If you don't want to see a dermatologist, you could perhaps try seeing an aesthetician. Some of them are quite knowledgeable. They might allow you to return products that don't work for you, whereas you would probably be out of luck if a dermatologist's recs didn't work.

Oh, thanks for mentioning Cerave, Staysfit. We use that lotion, I should look into sunscreens from that brand.

Via logic that I won't torture you all with by typing out here, I am beginning to wonder if I may have become sensitive to physical sunscreens (zinc oxide/titanium dioxide). Hm.

I am taking in these recommendations to see a dermatologist but I must admit that I suspect accessing one would be difficult with my current health insurance. (I am in the US.) Do you all just pay out of pocket? My husband had terrible experiences with two different dermatologists last year which doesn't inspire confidence in my mind I must say.

Dermatologist recommendations worked for me. I have rosacea, but it’s very well controlled. I use Cerave products for moisture and sunscreen, and I use a mild AHA peel once a week from Exuviance. Cetaphil for cleansing and makeup removal. Mineral make up from Elea Blake.

Gigi, great resource, thank you!

I think that even the amount of massage I am doing with cleansing and massaging cream into my face is having an effect! The proof will be in the pudding of the next week though, in terms of hormonal breakouts.

You know, it occurred to me that I have "fussy" skin, in the same way that some folks on this forum have fussy feet.

I am really appreciating the "sensitive" line from burt's bees (I am using the cleanser and night cream). The night cream has a lot of shea butter in it, as does a hand cream (Swedish dream) that I like. I find it very soothing on my skin.

Violettt, I'm glad you like the video. It seems simple enough for an untrained person to do, yet it gets all the major areas on the face. I especially like moving my ring fingers around the eye area--very relaxing.

Good advice about the oil vs. moisturizer. I'm always afraid my face will be an oil slick, so I usually don't put on enough shea butter, which cuts my massage short. I'll have to get braver next morning and use more! I use the Whipped Shea Butter with Olive Leaf from Evan Healy. It's been really good for my sensitive skin. To my surprise, I found that shea butter is not comedogenic. I've been using it for over a month, and so far, no problems.

I think Lisa Eldridge does her facial massage in front of the TV, just like you. :)

What are face rollers? Do you mean the ones with the tiny needles? I've always been afraid to try that myself.

Gigi: love that great video on facial massage from Into the Gloss. Thank you. It's marvelous~ Yes, oil is best for facial massage, as a moisturiser will sink in and give no slip, unless it's a massage cream. Shiseido has a great one. Face rollers are also wonderful. I keep mine by my couch and do it while watching TV, a perfect time for doing your face massage.

SarahD8, I have difficulty with burning skin and breakouts, etc., even though I'm in my forties and generally have dry skin now (used to be oily). I have had great luck with the SkinCeuticals sunscreen--I'm pretty sure it's called Physical Defense SPF 50. Don't get the matte one, because it's lacking an ingredient to properly block UVB rays (at least I think that's the case--Beauty with Brains had a qualm with the matte version). It's an expensive product, but you need very little, so I think it compares price-wise to other cosmetic sunscreens out there. It's not greasy. You might be able to find it on the ground somewhere, and then you could return it if it doesn't work.

I read online somewhere that if you have jawline breakouts, it might be worth doing a facial massage every day to get the lymph moving. Here is one that I use: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJw7KYPz-KU. She uses some special oil, but I'm sure you can use a facial moisturizer of your choice. I like to spritz my face with a hydrosol (basically kind of an herbal water) and then warm a little shea butter in my palms and then massage the shea butter in using strokes like she shows in the video.

ETA: Lisa Eldridge also has a facial massage video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdkgqXBXprY. Lisa is a celebrity makeup artist.

Christina I agree about eye cream, if you are using relatively gentle products no reason not to dab them around the eyes too. But I confess that as a long-time dark-circle-haver I am a bit tempted by the ones that claim to be "brightening."

Violettt thanks for circling back. I'm fair skinned (Northern European heritage). I am not sure about my skin "type." It is increasingly dry as I age, but I still get hormone-related breakouts (especially along the jawline). I usually describe it as "sensitive" because I generally like to avoid scents and long ingredient lists -- scents often give me headaches, and random things unpredictably bother my skin in a contact dermatitis sort of sense. (For example, that Drunk Elephant sunscreen arrived today, and it turned out to be a recipe for instant burning/tingling skin and watery eyes. Sigh. Back to the drawing board.) I do have eczema but only on my hand (dumb 20-year-old me was careless with formalin while doing biology fieldwork), not on my face.

SarahDH: It depends on your skin! Are you fair or olive toned? Oily, dry, sensitive? Yes, I do believe in some sort of AHA's. I use the Pixi toner every morning and love it. It's 5% AHA, just right for me. I think this product, being that it's mild, can work for everyone. Too strong of an acid will break away your mantle. Angie from Hot n Flashy uses way too much. That is why her skin is slick, shiny, and will eventually be wrinkly. Too much acid has the adverse affect of causing wrinkles.
And Retin A----another subject.
Joy: I surely would not recommend "Bag Balm" or Noxema. No way. Or Oil of Olay. The pink original lotion does smell lovely, but it is just a scented light mineral oil, do you think this is good for the skin? Nope.
There are some good drugstore finds. You don't have to spend a fortune on expensive lines to get great skin, but you do have to KNOW your skin and it's needs first and foremost. I happen to love Chanel, expensive yes, but they are beautiful smelling, I adore the packaging, they look so beautiful and sleek on my vanity, and they work for my skin, with the addition of some other products too chosen for specific skin concerns.

I use mostly Paula's Choice products (though I agree it's weird for them to make recommendations, too, but they don't usually hesitate to say when other products are good). I have an exfoliating toner, serum, and moisturizer with SPF (from the drugstore). I have a gentle soap for my face too, savon de Provence. I am not sure about eye cream, as I've read it's kind of an extra unneeded expense and so I just slather on the serum and moisturizer. But I don't know if that's really true or not.

Violettt, that's really helpful, thank you! So, are you saying that you don't recommend acids at all? That seems to be the form of exfoliation (vs. physical exfoliants) that is recommended across a number of different sites. I'm 44, FWIW.

Joy, oh I remember bag balm! My mom used to use it on her hands. I think we bought it at the fabric store??? I rather like a dewy shine too.

You know, I already notice a difference in my skin from just a few days of consistently cleansing and using moisturizer. Definitely looking more hydrated. Oh, and I put a little bottle of cleanser in my swim bag so I am no longer washing my face with soap, I am sure you are all relieved to hear!

My grandmother, a farmer's wife for many years had beautiful glowing soft skin using what she called bag balm, something sold for use on milk cow udders. My mother, who was very slim and well onto her 80's when she died without any wrinkles, used Noxema to wash and as a moisturizer. I think bag balm is sold at agricultural feed stores and Noxema at drug stores. Right now I am using Eucerin from Target to cleanse and moisturize. It leaves a shine but I don't mind.

Hi~ As a professional Esthetician for the past 27 years, I think it is important to have a professional analyze your skin. I would make an appt. for a facial first and foremost. I respectfully disagree with Angie from Hot n Flashy's channel. Do not look to her for advice. She is all about stripping the skin, slathering it with acids, in order to reverse all the sun damage she has incurred; she is not about basic skin care needs. Your local Esthetician will direct you, after she sees your skin. Every skin is different and has such different needs, according to it's condition and your age, etc. Do you have melasma? Rosecea? Acne? Wrinkles? etc. Oily skin? Dry or sensitive skin? Are you 50 or 30?
What I can help you on are these tips:
Thoroughly remove your makeup every night, then wash your face, tone it, moisturize it, and use an eye cream. Twice a week use a mask for your skin type after cleansing. Wash your face every morning with a face cleanser not soap. Wear sunscreen every day of the year, as the last step before makeup. Drinks lots of water, stay out of the sun, and eat healthy.
In the department store, my favorite skin care lines are Chanel and Shiseido. Maybe you could invest in about 6 basic products from either line for 2018. That would be a great start. The gals at the counters can help you pick the right ones~ Voila~ Good Luck. If you have any specific questions you need help with I'm happy to help!
Violettt~

The skin is the largest organ of our bodies. If you eat well, stay hydrated and use sun screen, it holds you in good stead to have good skin.

I recommend seeing a dermatologist for advice on an appropriate skin care routine. I have sensitive skin (which includes occasional psoriasis flare ups) and so gentle products work best on my skin. I have a routine that I am very happy with. My skin is healthy and not stressed and I enjoy my twice daily cleanse, tone and moisturise routine.

Perfect attitude, Shevia, I love it! My husband made his famous mushroom gravy to serve with popovers last night and we'll have the leftovers in the form of poutine later in the week -- who doesn't like gravy, indeed?

rachylou I'm glad I'm not alone in this quest! I've also heard those stories of older ladies with flawless skin who just used something very simple like Oil of Olay. I suspect the key is consistency...oh dear, does not bode well for me having gotten to my mid-40s without having done hardly a thing (I doubt that sort of consistency counts).

I need to make this resolution myself.

I watched a dermatologist on PBS... you know, they all seem to say a retinol cream is the one thing... but a lot of sensitive peeps have probs with that... and it can make you more sensitive to the Sun... so a night thing. After that, the PBS guy said eat your veggies!

My grandma used Clinique and hadn’t a singe wrinkle. Oil of Olay is also what a lot of flawless seniors I’ve known have used.

Things that I’ve tried that have made a visible difference: Vitamin C, copper, peptide creams/treatments.

Um, also, oxygen... which I’ve only ever had with surgery... but I swear my skin looked awesome after the two I’ve had. So I totally want to visit an oxygen bar one day in L.A.! Lol!

I'll look out for Simple brand, thanks lisaflex!

Meredith, great to know you've had good results with drunk elephant. I'll keep marula oil in mind in case I need more moisture.

Beautiful with brains looks like a GREAT resource, thanks Gigi!

Ok, I've done some reading both there and on Caroline Hirons' site and I feel like at least now I've got my bearings on the topic. Super, super helpful. Feel much more empowered to make decisions now (don't worry, my skepticism remains intact).

I've bought the night cream version of the cleanser I've been using as a moisturizer was totally lacking from my routine and seems like a good idea at my age. I'll add the drunk elephant sunscreen in about a week. Then, I'll just let things ride for a month or so -- both because my skin tends to be a bit sensitive and because a gradual approach seems a good strategy for keeping things simple.

I have learned a lot from this website: http://www.beautifulwithbrains.com. I think that at one point the woman who does the site was studying to be a dermatologist, but I don't see that in the "About Me" section, so either she dropped out of med school or I have a very bad memory!

SarahD8: I think you will like the sunscreen. I’m a huge fan of the Drunk Elephant range, in particular the travel sized soaps and sunscreen which are quite reasonably priced compared to the rest of their products. The inexpensive, gentle drugstore brands dermatologists recommend tend to break me out but I’ve had great results with DE. You can add marula oil (cheaper from Acure than Drunk Elephant) if you need extra moisture. Agree that simple is good.

Ha, I dig the overall tone of cardigan-enabling in your responses! :-)

My academic background is in biology and English literature, so I definitely appreciate the skepticism from both the Naomi Wolf and peer-reviewed literature directions, Jenni NZ and Gaylene.

And smittie, I like the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" subtext to your post. To answer your question, I don't have any major problems with my skin. But, I'm 44, and notice some incipient lines, dark spots, and just general dullness that are motivating me to be a little more diligent about preserving what I've got.

deb that Caroline Hirons site looks GREAT -- just the sort of background info that I was looking for to help me orient myself and make sense of the big picture.

I've just ordered the sunscreen from Drunk Elephant which I found for a surprisingly reasonable price on Amazon, so I hope that's a little more moisturizing than the sunscreen I've been using. And I think I'll get a micellar water for those nights when I Just Can't, similar to madeline's suggestion. (Though for the record, Zibbets, I'm much more likely to wash my face at night on days when I wear makeup, which I don't do every day. )

I found a few other links that I thought were helpful while poking around but I don't have them handy on this device, I'll try to post them later.

Thanks for weighing in, all -- and keep it coming!

I am enjoying this post. Here is what I have learned over the years:
Mild cleansers are best.
Put a pack of make-up remover wipes or even baby wipes on your bedside table for those times when you are way too tired to wash up.
Less is more as far as moisturizers. I use a drugstore moisturizer with built-in sunscreen every morning.
If skin is feeling dry at night, I might use that moisturizer again or use something a little heavier. All my octogenarian friends swear by Oil of Olay or Ponds Cold Cream.
Over to the rest of the group: looking forward to reading what you do.

Is there something wrong with your skin? Rashes or breakouts or anything?
If there’s no problem with your skin then I think you’re fine.

I think sunscreen is important but it’s hard to get one that doesn’t cause damage to my very dry skin. The physical blocking sunscreens (ones that don’t sink into your skin) are getting a lot better (less white).

If you want a good moisturiser, get a Dr to prescribe, or just buy from a pharmacy, a tub of cetomacrogol cream. That's what the dermatologists get anyone with eczema to use. Cheap as chips ( an expression for quite cheap!) and I think the international name. Basically for moisture you need something called an "emollient" which puts moisture into the skin. The rest is mostly marketing. Try reading Naomi Wolf's feminist book from 1990 called "The Beauty Myth" about holy oils and the rubbish we get told about their ingredients. I can't tell you how much money that book has saved me. Must be thousands since 1990. And my skin is pretty good for age 56 without any of it. Buy the cardigan!
