Thanks Scarlet. I was in another Apollo Optik already, but they have a different range in every store I think - maybe I'll visit the one you mentioned. My face is fairly regular, so most of the sunglasses I tried were alright when it came to width. I'm going home for the weekend, maybe I'll find something there.

It was a young guy at an Apollo Optik by Wittenbergplatz. Maybe you can find him My options are always severely limited by my narrow face (most glasses are too broad), so that probably makes it easy to narrow it down quickly.

Thanks teeandcee!

Thanks Meredtih! Yes, it's true that I can't fo wrong with something classic. I don't think I would update these soon, so I'll wear them a few years at least.

Angie, I guess that's true. I love this pair http://www.ray-ban.com/usa/sunglasses/rb4132/601, I guess if I would splurge then on these. I've seen them online in a deep purple with silver hardware. Although I haven't tried them on IRL, so they might not suit me at all.

Diana, thanks for the visuals! They look both great on you. That's a good point about the lenses being not too curved. And wrap-around styles aren't possible either, that's true. My last Rx sunglasses (very old) were normal frames with dark lenses. I'm not sure how dark I want the lenses to be...

Thanks Jjsloane! I've already tried a lot on, but I haven't found the perfect pair yet. Pictures would help, that's true - maybe I can find someone patient enough to come with me and take pictures.

Scarlet, you're lucky that you had success with the first pair you tried! I feel like I've tried hundreds on already. I think you're right about sunglasses looking different than regular ones. The ones I liked best so far weren't ones I would want to wear as normal glasses!

I took the first ones the salesman handed me because I liked them :o) I think I find sunglasses actually a little easier than glasses. For example, my prescription pair is tortoise shell, although that never looked right on me as regular glasses. Maybe because the lenses are dark more different frame colors and thicknesses seem to work--they just stand out on your face no matter what. I also cannot pull off the really oversized ones.

I try to pay attention to what "they" recommend for my face shape but actually am a slave to what I like, what is comfortable on and price. I currently have (but do not need Rx ones) wayfarer knockoffs in black and tortoise, some larger ones in navy and my new faves Boden Roadtrip shades in pewter (because they are secretly orange inside):
http://www.bodenusa.com/en-US/.....hades.html
I recommend trying on a bunch (photos might help you decide) but you have an oval face I think so any shape will work so I'd focus on the comfort factor (where they hit on your nose, how much coverage you want...)

Ha, yes, I rather like the giant sunglasses that make me look like a bug... but I totally understand where you are coming from. It's not a look for everyone! I think one issue is that prescription sunglasses of necessity have to be flatter than non-Rx ones to accomodate the lenses so you can't get some of the more curved and wrap-around styles. You might want to look at Wayfarer or aviator style - ray-bans are the iconic ones but there are plenty of copies. They don't work for me at all because of my virtually non-existent nose bridge (which makes glasses sit very low on my face so I need specs with higher tops) but they may work for you.

ETA: here are pics of my 2 pairs of Rx sunglasses. The first are my giant D&G pair that I wear most of the time. This is probably too bug-like for you. The second are a cheapo pair that I rarely wear because they don't come up quite high enough to block all the sun. I like the futuristic look though and they are sufficiently wide. The lenses on this pair are super dark, which I love. I think I am going to have the D&Gs relensed with darker lenses.

I have wrap around raybans and love them! Hard to go wrong with a great classic brand. I have seen some white sunglasses on Nordies website that are intruiging.

Like others, my first priority was huge lenses, lots of coverage. I'm loving all these gigantic 70's styles that are popular now. After that I wanted something versatile and flattering on my face.

Elisabeth, makes sense to use the same criteria for specs and sunglasses.

Diana, I already tried different frames last week and I have to confess I always felt a bit Puck the house fly when I tried some of the really big ones. I guess it makes sense to go bigger with sunglasses though. I agree about the grey lenses, I think I prefer these to red tinted ones for example.

Angie, Raybans are definitely the go to glasses for styliish people here! I like the look of some of them, but they aren't exactly low priced for my budget...

Manidipa, potential droop should be avoided, I agree. Thanks for your elaborate answer! I guess I really know what's comfortable quite well because I'm on Team Specs. But the thing with going outside to test how they work in shady areas is brilliant! Never thought of it before.

Louise, that's awesome! I guess one should always keep an open mind. I think I'll do the same this afternoon, try on as many frames as possible.

I spent an hour in Boots and tried on loads of pairs till I found one I liked. I had no preconceived notion of what I wanted other than fairly large and no aviators, I love the look but they always look awful on me. Guess what I came out with? The perfect pair of aviators!! X

I wanted size, like Diana. Specifically, being migraine-prone, I wanted no chinks in the armour, so something that sealed against my cheekbones and allowed peripheral vision while sealing the sides, with wide arms too.

I wanted muted tints for the lenses. I'd read grey and green are the easiest on the eye in terms of protection and least distorting too. So though I liked the look of the pinks and yellows, I passed when I tried them on. I also did NOT want my eyes to be easily visible in the glasses (privacy issues) so I wanted a darker rather than lighter tint --- which works great in tropical sun, but YMMV.

Like Diana, last time I chose, I got tortoiseshell because I wanted a little interest as well as versatility, minus any metallic bits (don't like the look, plus have metal allergy issues). This time around, I'm considering a little colour on the inside rim and inside the arms, for a change. And possibly a dark (near-black or brown till you get close) colour for the outside, or a little textural interest? Flat black bores me i'd want some outre shape if I got black.

Shapewise, with sunglasses at least I want brow coverage and top of cheekbone coverage, so I do like a frame that tilts up at the sides to prevent the potential droop of say the aviator style. Especially as I have a heavy jawline and jowls and double chin. I also wanted a high bridge (short nose here) and a heavier top line on the rim to balance my heavier jawline.

When checking frames, apart from looking in the mirror, I make sure to check against light for glare, against different colours for distortion, poke my head out of the brightly lit shop to see how it does in shady outdoor areas (am I blind?? can I read the sign across the street clearly), and test my peripheral vision. Also I my shake head vigorously to see if they'll fall off, but you already wear glasses and know what feels secure, I'm sure.

My criteria was, first and foremost, that they be ENORMOUS. I also wanted a roundish or cat-eye shape that was relatively high on top. (Basically, this is because I did not want Wayfarer-style glasses, which are terribly unflattering on me and don't even provide good sun coverage because the top part is too low on my flat nose.) I have a wide face and finding sufficiently huge frames was really difficult!

I chose tortoiseshell which is my favorite color for glasses (both sun and regular) and grey lenses because I do not like any sort of tint or color distortion on my lenses.

My criteria for sunglasses are the same as those for glasses: the shape and colour of the frames must flatter my features and my complexion. Additionally, the lenses must be a warm, not cool, tint. I like looking at the world through rose-coloured spectacles.

Remember I was asking about prescription sunglasses here http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....ut-of-them?

Well I was at a optometrist and they want only 17,50€ for normal prescription lenses. Before that I was debating spending the money for sunglasses, but with this price I can't really go wrong. No I just need some fab low priced frames.

I thought about getting slight cateye ones, because I love the shape. I'm not sure what color I should look for, but I think I don't want solid black. What were your criteria when you chose your sunglasses?
