Hey Fashintern. Referring to your pix of different necklaces, I think #9 fits the available space very well and complements, whereas some of the others fight with the top.

As far as what can or cannot be worn by "grownups": I believe you should dress according to your own individual personality, not your age! Too many women are surrendering to boring because they consider themselves too old or maybe not attractive enough to wear something they really love. Color is also something that seems to be avoided in conservative style...But, why? Color gives any woman radiance!

Styling according to your own likes (despite what others may think!) rather than what is offered to women of your age bracket, is what sets you apart and brings life to your look! ...AND, makes you feel better about yourself. Therefore, you are happier, giving yourself the added attraction of a smiling, contented countenance!

Wear the seasonal colors that complement your skin, hair and eye colors, and wear what YOU want to wear!!

P.S. I think chokers go best with tank tops, spaghetti straps, etc., in cases where the top doesn't interfere with the choker.

Blessings,
Cindy@diybohemian.com

Yes to 6 and 9 with the neckline of the top- principle of related line. Round chokers would be harmonious with a lower crew/higher scoop neck.

I think of facing of more of the structural thing (note I don’t sew), but yes the contrast lining inside the collar and placket.
Pinstripes and paisley are pretty traditional patterns. Not saying it’s a bad shirt, but seems incongruous with the choker.

The pinstripes don’t go with the vibe. Unless you’re staunch New England coming home from a tropical trip wearing your friend’s necklace because you had a few too many gin tonics the night before

Shevia, now that we've had the conversation, #6 is my favorite, because it settles in with the collar and colors so nicely. Before, I was leaning towards #1, but that might be partially because I really want to find a way to wear that one.

Thanks BD! I wish I could remember what I wore that one with. What do you see it working with well? BTW, I've gone back and changed the description of where I got it.

I find chokers to be a real challenge these days. I put one on then take it off. Seems like an arrow pointing to my aging skin.

However, in your case, you look great in several of these. I think the more delicate ones look better, and the close color looks good. So ## 4, 6, 7, & 9 for me.

Firecracker has a great point--wearing them with an open collar so just part of it shows has worked for me in the past.

Chokers 3 and 6 are my favorite.

I wonder how these would look if worn with a button-down shirt. I see that Firecracker has mentioned something similar. I'm not sure why, but I feel like chokers might look best when worn with a collared shirt.

I think Joy meant "chokers" for "chickens." That gave me a chuckle too. It is probably autocorrect at its finest!

Thank you all for the compliments on my fugitive-from-the-70s outfit! Phoebe, that balance of sporty and artistic sounds like high praise--thanks! Nuancedream, the suede jacket is one I've had for probably 20 years, but have rarely worn until now. I think it's going to be a thing this summer/fall. And you all know I've been enjoying the flares.

I'm hearing some clear coalescence on the necklaces. I certainly feel validated in keeping the necklace my boyfriend gave me in 7th grade--it's the seashell one, #9. My mom gave me #6; it is from metalelements.com and supposedly has the adinka word "understanding" on it. #3 was picked up at a flea market my first time around in Berlin. #8 was also purchased second-hand, to wear to a dance with a very shiny gold outfit I posted on here once. I used to wear it quite a bit, but right now can't remember what I wore it with. Was that all the favorites?

On the rest of them, #1 was in a lot from which I was choosing a gift for my sister. People on this blog said it looked great on me because of how it picked up my eyes & I should keep it. I did, but haven't worn it once. #2 is a seashell choker I bought in DC in the late 90s and haven't worn. #4/5 is a souvenir from Tahiti. Its length is adjustable. #7 is in a very unflattering position here. It was the only shiny thing I had with me when we arrived in Berlin; I sometimes wore it as a headband or bracelet.

Nemosmom, Firecracker, and SarahD8, thanks for the comments on chokers and the kinds of collars they work with. I have somehow always thought they were "supposed" to go with necklines that were not V-shaped but were fairly low, so there was an expanse of skin between the necklace and the fabric. Whenever I've tried it (including 20 years ago when I got the seashell one in DC), I've felt like it was more of a look for a teen. That's where the title of the post came from. But just now, looking for a picture I had in mind, I see there are a lot with just the kind of round, not-low kinds of collars you suggest.

Joy, I generally don't call people out on typos, because I think it's tacky and pedantic, but I genuinely don't know what you mean by "chickens". Is that what you were trying to say? I clicked on "comedy" for that comment, because it made me picture an egg-layer on my shoulder & I chuckled.

The first necklace looks the most current. Save the shells to wear with something very summery like a swimsuit and coverup.
#8 reminds me of my grandmother, so I suppose that is beyond grown up.
Chickens in general remind me or machreme things from the 60’s. and early 70’s.

I like 3 and 6- they add something to the blouse but don’t dominate.

3, 6 and 9. Shapes or colours the best. Most of the others fill the space too much or are too round: they distract rather than complement IMO.

Great outfit! Cool-day boho vibes.

To me the necklaces that work best here are 6 and 9 because they follow the neckline of your top. 6 is quieter, 9 makes a slightly bolder (but not overwhelming) statement.

I like firecracker's collared shirt idea for chokers. Or maybe a round neckline-- crew neck or slight scoop?

I like 3, 6, and 9 the best. I do like #1, on you, but I think it would work better with a solid or strong graphic/ high contrast pattern rather than the subtle intricate pattern of the top you're wearing. I like the way 3 echoes the shape of the neckline and the subtlety of the pattern. 6 is lovely, and a similar pendant with more of an oval-ish or teardrop shape would be fantastic, too. 9 picks up the boho vibe of the blouse as well as the cognac touches in the outfit, and it works well with the neckline--bravo!

On the question about wearing chokers in general, I have found them to work really well with an open collar, and worn just at the point where the necklace nestles into the space above the collarbone, as you are showing in 5. I would try that particular necklace with a collared shirt, worn open.

I really like how necklace #6 complements the earthy colors in your outift. BTW, fab suede jacket and you wonderful in it!
