Here's mine. The doorway is 24"! There's a little more room behind the door on the left and in that area I store shoes in a hanging organizer and belts and purses on hooks. I store out of season clothes in a spare suitcase. I also have this tall dresser which holds knit tops, socks/underwear, sweaters and gear/sleepwear.

I love seeing people's closets! So interesting to see how we store/display what we own.

Have you seen the the blog by Jeanna Sohn called Closet Visit? I loved the one with handbag designer CLare Vivier, she had paintings hung in her closet....and windows too. http://closetvisit.com/

My most recent closet photos are from this post. Sorry for the very long text. Apparently I was thinking and typing that day. :)

The most organized portion of my closet is the trousers and jeans which are on one rack that you see when you walk in. The closet is a rectangle shape. The long right side is mine and the long left side not in the photos is hubby's. At the time of the photos, I had recently put all my clothes in the closet (I used to store off season clothes in a second closet). Currently the spring/summer clothes are on stackable hangers and squished in the corner to take up as little room as possible. Clothes are organized by category and then colors. Dresses, skirts, blouses and shirts, cardigans, then blazers. Most sweaters are folded in a separate dresser not in the photos. My layering LS t-shirts and short sleeve t-shirts and tank tops are also in the dresser.

I plan to do some closet reorganizing and retake some photos around the New Year and will repost. My goal is to reduce the current amount.

Clearlyclaire I love your minimalist closet!

Ha! This is pretty much it after the cull of death. Big closet. Few clothes. Bonus: you get to see my ratty slippers! This year I put all of my summer clothes away even though there is plenty of room. I wanted to give my eye a break since I wanted to burn them all by the end of the summer.

IK, your hubs would faint dead away if he saw my closet! It doesn't contain that much because it's only a single rod and we don't have great storage solutions in there, but I estimate 8-10 feet of clothes hung closely together. I'd say 4 feet of casual wardrobe, 2 feet of work wardrobe, 2 feet of handbags hung from closet rod. Boots are lined up underneath.

Okay, this is mine. I didn't measure it, but it's small. I recently reconfigured my trusty plastic shelves to have more room to hang items, so I can see what I have (thank you YLF!). Iphone photos slightly blurry but hopefully you will get the idea!

First is what you can see when doors are open.
Second and third is to the left, top and bottomish.
Fourth and fifth are to the right, top and bottomish.

On top of the shelves and under the hanging items are my bins. To the left top is my cashmere in storage. (The cashmeres I can maybe wear in Austin are folded up top. in the middle, next to my casual hoodies; cashmere vests are hanging up.) The open messy bin is my holding bin. Everything in bins to the right are summery items. For the bins on the floor, left is nonseasonal pants, right is my new-with-tags-white-shirt bin. I also have one bin under the bed with summer items, next to the bin with all the ski stuff for the family.

Seasonal coats and shoes are kept in a very small closet by the front door, which I share with DH and DD. Off-season is kept in the office/guest room closet along with all of my husbands photo equipment, our suitcases, spare bedding, gift wrap, and drawers of DD's artwork which I swear I will go through someday.

I like binning things because it keeps items tidy, and having to put things in and out of them forces me to evaluate each item at least twice a season.

BTW I am very proud of my empty hangars, this is a real first for me!

I have some larger bulkier (though not winter) scarves in drawers but the regular scarves I have drawn through lucite shower curtain rings that are hooked through a large plastic clamp pants hanger, so the rings don't slide around. I found that, for me, I'm lazy about putting scarves away and this is a no brainer.

I have a 6 foot by 2.5 foot reach-in closet with double hanging bars on one side and shelves down the middle. There is 6 feet of hanging space, 16 feet of shelf space (not including the shoe shelf, another 4 feet). I have about 60 wooden hangers in there (not all have something), and I can fit about 25 pairs of shoes (including on the floor).
I use this Ikea hanger for my scarves:
http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/cata...../70108912/
I may take a pic later, depending on how my camera co-operates.

ETA: I also have 4 drawers just to the side of the closet for undies, socks and winter accessories, etc.

We built our house last year. We were on a budget (of course), but I made sure to devote some space to a walk-in closet. It's about 9x6, with an additional little 3x3 nook built into the side of it (where I keep shoes and a bookcase with junk on it). However, I don't have a dresser, so basically ALL my clothing gets kept in my closet. I have my jeans and tees in stacks on shelves. Undies, socks, etc. get kept in bins on shelves.

Sarah, I love your shoe racks! Your husband did a great job! : )

The nicest thing about our current apartment is all the closet space. So I get my own closet in the bedroom (hooray!) and my husband's closet is in the bathroom. I was really inspired by April's closet in this thread:

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....t-thread-1

So I tried to organize some of my clothes and accessories in a similar way. These are all my clothes and accessories for all seasons and all occasions (except a few items that are at the dry cleaner's and a few that are at the tailor). I have three coats that I keep in the closet by the front door and I have three pairs of boots on the floor that you can't see in the photographs. I feel like it's one of those picture games--how many striped things can you see? How many red? : )

We have two closets in our master bedroom but neither of them is a walk-in although they are deeper than usual. Here's a few pictures. I share them both with my husband. We added the closet organizer with the double bars and shelves when we moved into the house. My husband built the shoe shelves for me. They are built on both sides of the closet and the original plan was for one set to be mine and one set to be his, but I ended up appropriating almost all of the shelves. We also have one large dresser and I have 3 drawers in it. Photo #1 is of one closet and #2/3 of the second closet.

I have an old rowhouse. When we had some work done the contractor said I had a huge closet compared to all the other houses in the city they had worked in - that were comparable houses and not huge overgrown city mansions. The people before us made the closet somewhat bigger than the typical one on the block.

We have a living room coat closet that's the width of a standard door, with maybe a few inches more inside. No pantry or utility closet. On the floor with bedrooms, two of the bedrooms have single closets about 30" wide. My husband uses one of those and I've taken over the other with summer hat and shoe storage and handbags.

The bedroom has two closets. One is small and about 26". I use that for off season clothing storage. The other is the one that the contractors marveled over - but I gave them a look because it seems really small to me. It is about 9 feet and is a walk in closet but not like the ones where people have chests of drawers and benches and whatnot. Just that you can walk into it but you can't do anything once you're there.

I wanted my husband to change the long rod across it so that I could have two, one higher one for off season. I had more clothes then. He didn't know how to do that and was being mysterious. He asked me to measure my longest shirt/jacket. I had some tunics. He used that measurement to make an arrangement where there was one short rod on each side of the closet and in the middle he made an overbuilt wooden contraption with double rods. Problem: with all the mystery no one was able to tell him that the length needed was that of the garment PLUS the hanger neck. Therefore I had this monster contraption where clothes on the top were hanging over the hangers on the bottom. I didn't use it and many years later at least repositioned the end rods so that one held long garments above a slanting floor that is the staircase underneath and the other could take a second rod that hangs from the higher rod. In the middle business, I hang skirts and sometimes I hang scarves and necklaces. The more you hang from that top rod in the middle, the less light shines on the rest of the clothing. I have one light bulb in that closet. I also have a high shelf that is useless to me for anything since I'm 5' tall. The way my husband had it originally he turned that 9 foot long closet into two tiny side by side cubicles. It is the closet from hell. At the back wall of half the closet, I squeezed in a small rolling rack that holds pants and pants suits. I have some shoes in hanging shoe files.

This is an old photo. Shows tops and blouses on top end rack and jackets beneath them. You can see part of the rolling rack.

I also have an armoire in the living room that holds a lot of coats and jackets. I have a china cabinet thingy where I have bins of gloves, hats, scarves in the bottom half.

I'm still recovering from Mo's saying she has no bookshelves. Wow. We have tall bookshelves in almost every room of the house. LOL I consider books to be thick wallpaper.

Back to closets.... I have 3 ft of hanging space and a wide 9 drawer dresser. That doesn't include coats and some of my jackets which live in the entry closet.

I have one half of a small closet that I share with DH. I have one hanging bar in my side, and the shelves down the middle for sweaters and shoes (which is fair because his shoes are on my floor, and he has two hanging bars on his side). I also have a lingerie chest for jewelery/belts (you can see it in pic 2), a decent sized dresser for lingerie/jammies/workout gear/layering pieces, and an armoire where I keep hats/bags/scarves.
The first photo is my side of the closet (which you can't see all of because it goes behind the wall a bit, and the center shelf unit. The second picture is the closet outside to give you an idea of how big the whole thing is- the curtains cover the width that the closet actually is on the inside, and not just the door opening.

Ha ha, Mamakate! This reminds me that my BF is such a minimalist that our 2 upstairs closets were converted when we redid the bath. We turned the kitchen pantry/closet into more shower space and the coat closet became the place for linens and bath products with addition of shelving, as he opted for a pedastal sink and the only bath storage is a medicine cabinet. No wonder he thinks I have so much! We don't even have a bookcase, I kid you not, in 1300 square feet of living space.

IK, no photos, but here's a comparison you can take to DH to relax his attitude: I have appropriated three -check that - four - nope - five - of the seven closets in our house: of the two 4-foot closets in our bedroom, my stuff occupies one and a half of them (3/4 of the total, or 6 feet). Then there's the 3-foot front hall closet, in which my coats occupy about 2/3 of the space. Then there's the 6-foot-long closet in the guest room which is brimming full with my seldom-used items including occasion dresses, suits, and day dresses impossible to wear for nursing. At the bottom of this guest room closet is a 2-and-a-half-foot cube (that's a really big box) filled with costumes. Then there's the two-foot hall closet which is filled with my gear and coats for when we visit locations with cold winters. Hm, I think that covers it. So that would be 16 feet of closet space occupied by my wardrobe. The only two closets I've left untouched are the one in DD's room and the broom closet in the kitchen!

Mine is probably just slightly bigger than Mo's guest room closet. It has two bifold doors that are together are slightly wider than a regular door and I have about 6 inches tucked behind the wall on each side of the door-- I think it is a 5' closet. I also have a dresser with two small drawers and three big drawers (upright) but it is mostly used to store off-season and occasional wear/gear items because it is an antique and despite frequent waxing the structure of it has sagged enough that the wood on wood drawer slides leave sawdust on the clothes if opened often. Right now it has empty top drawers, a drawer 1/2 full of pants I save in my "other size" and 1/2 full of gear, a drawer of summer ts and tanks, and another drawer that is 1/2 gear and 1/2 keepsake clothes.

I also store 4 comforters/quilts, some other bedding, several small/medium sized boxes of keepsakes and family heirlooms, and a few other odds and ends (yoga mat-- my art portfolio, my two camera bags, some framed art) in my closet in addition to some formal wear that doesn't belong to me and a couple of costumes. I store my shoes that aren't worn weekly (the ones I keep in boxes) in there. All folded clothes that I wear regularly go on the shelves in the top and I have a 3-drawer plastic drawer unit that I use to keep underthings and swimsuits splinter free! I have a coat rack on the back of the bedroom door where I hang a coat or two (whichever I'm wearing that week/season), a sweatshirt for lounging/the yard, and my robe. I will occasionally air things there.

Overall, I don't have a tiny closet like some that I've seen in houses from the 1930s that are only as wide as a door (If that). Still, because it is basically the only closet I have in the entire house (no coat closet, no linen storage except for a small cabinet in the bathroom) it seems very small because of all the boxes and bedding I have to store. If I didn't have to keep my bedding in the closet I would put the off season clothing in boxes in the closet and save myself 6 square feet of wasted dresser floor space! My house is tiny and right now I have the office in my bedroom.

Well, in FL it's plenty big and I only use part of it, maybe 5' of rod space (pic 1). In Tahoe, I have my closet (poor shot in pic 2) and a roughly same size one in the spare room that the BF and I share for coats, purses, mittens, ski gear, etc (pic 3). Oh, and my wonderful 7 drawer dresser from Santa Fe!

Not big enough!
Seriously, no matter how organized I am, mine is going to be a challenge. And that's with a not terribly big wardrobe.

I'm curious to see any organization tips that you might have.
