Linda Walsh, lynn, and Suntiger, thanks!

Lynn, I’m following Angie’s suggestion and not rushing into any purchase. If you look at my last comment on machines you’ll see that it was about Z’s space and possible (sewing machine) weight issues, but that I also cautioned about giving up too much on quality while going for a more convenient machine. Those things matter to me as well. If the establishment brands have machines that meet those needs for a reasonable price, great, but the full-size, heavy machine that folds into a table that looks like a small desk when not extended is simply not going to happen.

There are lots of good inexpensive sewing machines. Both Brother and Janome are good brands. Singer is also making some good inexpensive machines. You can google recommendations.
The mini sewing machines aren't worth the money.

I’d have these hemmed professionally for now, so that you can wear them soon. Then take your time finding the right sewing machine.

Zaoebi, great minds think... in opposite directions? Lol.

In looking around at sewing machine possibilities, I’ve come across multiple mentions of this one, which doesn’t sound that hard to move around,

https://www.w6-wertarbeit.de/n.....HUEALw_wcB
And this list of minis, which vary considerably in features, but are all quite small https://www.warenvergleich.de/.....nzEALw_wcB

Maybe one of them would work for you. One thing to watch out for in the minis though is that many of them are lightweight because the gears are made of plastic. It’s lighter than metal, of course, but also breaks more easily.

What serendipitous timing! I busted out my sewing kit 2 days ago to play around the hem of some satin trousers! Only it was to *add* an elasticated jogger hem, rather than to remove it.

I also don't have the space for an actual sewing machine, so have been doing everything by hand. Takes forever but at least I can do it whilst doing something else (so long as I don't get too distracted by the TV etc though lol)

DonnaF and Rachylou, you bring up two important factors that will probably fight each other. I can easily see myself deciding to sew something like an awning, and I doubt I’ll have space to dedicate to a sewing machine permanently, so I’ll need to be able to pack it up and move it easily. Hmmm

Nice!

I have a real sewing machine, but I also had one of those really cheap As Seen On tv mini machines (table top, not hand held). I actually enjoyed sewing with it, lol (I broke it eventually). YMMV, but it was easy to get out and put away.

FI: Before you buy a machine, consider the thickest fabric you might stitch in multiple layers -- like jeans at the crotch. In addition to a thick needle, you'd need a strong motor. My mom ruined a machine when she stitched thick marine canvas for a patio/deck awning. Also, (she owned four machines when she died), see the reviews on how easy it is to adjust the tension. I could never get the upper and lower thread tension quite right on any of them. My favorite machine of them all was a Singer Slant Needle because the needle slanted toward the user so was easier to see. But I think those old treadle machines were best.

Phoebe, good idea about weighting down the pants. I wasn’t crazy about them as joggers, with the elastic keeping them up on my legs, so I might want to use some kind of tape around the hem. Thanks for the suggestion. I appreciate your encouraging thoughts about creativity as well.

Here’s what they look like now—unstyled (this is a workout shirt) but I tossed on sandals I might wear with them.

Before you go any farther you might want to look at some Youtube tutorials about adding weight to the hem.

The elastic was holding the hem down and especially in silk you may not be happy with the way the leg hangs without any weight.

I am hoping you will get a sewing machine because you seem like a natural talent for creative alterations which I hope you will share.

Kate, that’s perfect! I had my grandma’s Singer (no treadle, but easily 50 years old) but gave it away when my 2.5 year old son and I were moving a long way. I’ll look for Janomes.

Good job with the pants, FI. I’m no seamstress, but I bought a simple sewing machine a few years ago to do the kind of things you mentioned. I think I spent $150 on it. My machine is made by Janome. It’s a great little machine, and simple to use. Since I learned to sew on my grandmother’s old treadle Singer sewing machine, I didn’t want anything too complicated!

Thanks cat2. I know I eventually want to get a simple machine, don’t know if now is the right time for it—or if this is the right fabric. My mom sewed a lot, but I only did a very little bit, years ago. I don’t think I’d do complicated things. The bog coat caught my attention, and I want to be able to hem clothes and curtains, that sort of thing. I tried something like this in the USA & was unimpressed. https://www.otto.de/p/easymaxx.....K0A0QBGFM6 I haven’t even started looking over here yet.

SO MUCH BETTER. Thanks, everybody, for the encouragement!

Next question is if I hand-stitch the new hem, have it done, or look for a mini sewing machine with very limited capabilities. I’m a little worried sewing this fabric myself, tba—there are rows of tiny holes where I just pulled stitches out. But there is no salvage edge, so I think a seam is necessary.

Thanks Tanya. 1” more to go from my waist—supposed to do it this month, haven’t started yet.

The operation is in progress. The elastic is about 1.5” across, fully covered by fabric, with a tiny little seam allowance and stitching halfway up the elastic. I’ll report back when one leg is done.

Rachylou, that’s exactly it—I don’t think I’d be comfortable with the elastic up there, or with them being tight over my knees because I’d just pulled them down.

It has just occurred to me that if I don’t like them loose, I could replace the elastic with some that’s not as wide and maybe attach it differently (ie, not cover the back of the elastic with pants fabric)

Lynn, I’m getting the seam ripper now.

ChristieIJ, let’s hope they’re still great little pants when I’m done with them!

I like them at this cropped length too! I’d wear them as is as long as they’re comfortable around the lower leg with that elastic.

I actually really like these the way they are now, but if you are bothered by them I bet they would also look good without the elastic. Great little pants!

The last time I showed these, the rise was too short. While they’ve been waiting through months of pandemic for me to take them to the second-hand shop, I’ve realized that “rise” is not purely a vertical measurement. I usually think it = height of waist - height of crotch, but in fact there is a horizontal component. If fabric gets used up going out and around a sideways football tucked under your waistband (my weight-gain pattern), then you need more to make it up, and maybe back in, to the waist. Forgive me if this is not a new lightbulb for you the way it was for me.

I generally am not into joggers, but this pair fascinated me when I was heavier, so I bought them as a goal item. I don’t remember what they cost, other than not much, and they’re 100% silk, which is a wonderful fabric.

I just pulled them out of the bag to see if they reach up and around to my waist, now that I’ve lost some of my lower tummy. My verdict: the rise is fine now, but the legs are too short.

The fabric at the bottom wraps around the wide elastic band. I’m thinking about getting out my seam ripper to see how they look sans elastic—I love the fabric that much.

What do you think?
