Lisa, here are a couple of shots from when I got the jacket, during NAS 2018. It's such a useful little jacket--good for wind and light rain, and it feels and packs up so light.

I remember my grandma wearing house dresses with an apron to do housework. I wonder now how comfortable that actually was.

Some of the nighties (“sleep dresses”) in the link are gorgeous. I recently bought a summer nightgown. I think, with careful accessorizing, it could pass as a dress.

Hmm. I don't have a WSJ subscription but when I hear "housedress" I'm picturing South Philadelphia grandmas scrubbing the front steps to their rowhouses.

Agreed - 'sheer' is a great way to add a layer without it adding visual bulk! Also I'd say your choice is more 'quirky waif' than 'demented grandma' because it's a shorter dress in a solid colour.

I wouldn't look anywhere near as cool in those accessories paired with my orange & black maxi muumuu/ kaftan

I wore this dress the other day, and felt very comfortable. I also went out of the house in it, walking, with a big parachute-type windbreaker that kind of covered the dress.

I think demented grandma can be kind of cool: isn't it sort of a cousin to quirky waif?

Thanks @Star - not easy to find house dresses in these warmer colours!

@Lisa I'm not sure actually - since it's secondhand, the label has rubbed off It's breathable like cotton, but you can see there's a bit of drape to the stiffness - so maybe a cotton viscose blend? Either way, it's perfect for my current WFH lifestyle!

That said, I agree with @Janet that it's not a very flattering look in public. I'm thinking of maybe belting it once I do (eventually) wear it outside. Maybe I could even throw on one of @Roxanna's 'demented grandma' jumpers & then 'rest' the welted hem on the belt buckle for a little structure? I usually just add a big blanket scarf if I get cold when I'm at home.

I don’t have any house dresses. I have been thinking about aprons and smocks though - for gardening as much as cooking.

I remember the dresses of the 70’s having a boho vibe. Anyone remember broomstick skirts? In the late 60’s I wore paper dresses, loose and cool and walked all over Europe in two dresses and one skirt. No pants allowed then. Times have changed!

Yes from me for the batik- and for lounging around in batik in Indonesia! *Aside from the scared to get on a plane cause of Covid bit*
The light color cotton ones look too much like nightgowns to me though. I'd feel too undressed in something like that- even for sleeping!

I have been intrigued by this trend! I love beautiful fabrics so this is right up my alley. But like Janet, my body doesn’t work well with them, abs my silver hair just adds to a frumpy old look To my mind. Not to mention that I always run cold, so I would need a sweater on top - adding to the demented grandma look. But I have been thinking of taking more risks lately so I might take the plunge anyway!

I find these so appealing in theory, but struggle with them on my body, especially to wear in public. The lack of structure is hard for me to embrace, from a flattery perspective. I don’t know if any of my current dresses have this vibe, except for maybe my very old Anthro tee dress.

This is very timely, considering I recently bought a cotton maxi dress from a charity shop (thrift store)! I'm not sure if it counts as a kaftan or a muumuu (the colours remind me of a dashiki but the paisley pattern feels quite subcontinental instead), so any cultural input would be much appreciated! Either way, I fully intend to transition it from WFH to belted for stepping outside in the high summer humidity here in Hong Kong

PS - I was just thinking of posting something later about charity shopping in Hong Kong - there are definitely many more options now compared to when I first arrived here. With a lot of the rest of the world still in lockdown, this may finally be a good way for me to find reasonably priced clothing that fits me here!

I have been talking about this a lot for summer and looking for options. Most of these would swamp me. But my versions include the Ripskirt (yeah, it has a waist, but the waist is super loose and the fabric ultra casual), and my Comrags dress. A "pant" version is the wide leg crop chambray. They feel (and quite honestly, look) quite PJ-like -- in the way that some of these dresses look like nighties.

My grandma and mother wore housedresses. Grandma's were shirtwaists with ditsy prints. My mother had some of the caftans in the 70s.

ETA: the Comrags is kind of magical because it is capable of working in the house but also it looks really nice for actual going-out events. It's a kind of seersucker nonwrinkling cotton, which makes it really versatile.

Floaty, waist-surrendering frocks have been my go-to summer look for several years now. I like an empire waistline, either with a structured or smocked bodice -- on me that cut is comfortable, breezy, and (I'm declaring by fiat) JFE. Hemline anywhere from a couple inches below the knee to a few inches above the ankle.

Of course, I am at home most of the time even in non-pandemic years, but I don't restrict this look to at-home only. Anyway, this trend gets a big thumbs-up from me.

Runcarla, that M & S dress is now my favorite. Mr. ND really likes it too! I am firmly on Team Housedress.

I believe YLFabbers nuancedream and Preppy Pear are already onto this trend with a beautiful Angie pick Marks and Spencer dress. If I can locate the Find, I’ll link it.

This is something I am definitely excited about. Though it's not quite the same, I've been wearing this one at home in a similar way. Too sheer for streetwear; could work on the beach.
