Ornella congrats on the house. I would love to hear about it as you progress.

Christy, I am going with white perimeter cabinets and a small chocolate brown island. The sink and dishwasher are in the island and it has an overhang for seating..I am in Ottawa until tomorrow evening but the site supervisor e-mailed me to say the cabinets were being installed on Monday. They should be in when I get home.

I saw a nice white granite - I think it was bianco romano - that had little subtle veins of small purple. It was very pretty but I needed a bit more color/pattern. Your kitchen sounds really nice and I look forward to seeing pictures of the progress.
SO glad I happened to check the Off Topic thread today! I've thought about you several times as we've been working out the details on our house and I've been hoping that yours has been going well. You must be so excited to see everything come together. We are still in just the planning stages - we haven't even broken ground yet, though we're hoping that will happen before the end of this week.

The draperies sound beautiful - how terrific to find ready-made panels that fit your expectations. And that granite is stunning - wow! What color cabinetry are you doing in the kitchen to complement that beautiful slab?

*waving at Ornella* Like Ornella, we bought within a development so the floor plan is mostly fixed, although we do have the ability to make a few changes to the layouts - move a bathroom here, move a wall there, etc. We've finished most of our design selections, made a few tweaks to the floor plan and for the most part we're just ready for them to start building. I'm most excited about the kitchen and master bath. For the kitchen we chose white cabinets with a white granite countertop (which has some amethyst sparkle in it also, though it is more white than grey) and dark wood floors. We're doing a dark grey stacked stone backsplash behind the cooktop and white subway tile everywhere else with an accent strip of the stacked stone.

So much fun to hear about your progress - looking forward to seeing more pictures! ;)

Such beautiful granite.

I'm just about to go through the house building myself. We bought a house within a project, so it will be managed by the building company, but we will of course be heavily involved.

It's nice to follow the end of your journey for the inspiration and lifted spirits :)

Shannon, there were some aspects that were better than expected and others not. There were a lot of delays at the beginning of the process so we are behind schedule enough that the month of overlap I had planned for is now not enough. I learned from my first building experience and made sure to decide on the larger upgrades in advance and build them into the agreement. That helped a lot. I also had a pretty clear vision for the colors so the consultation with the decorator focused on the few outstanding items.

Glory, I'm not sure if spring has arrived but it was much warmer yesterday and it is warm and sunny today. Yay.

I dropped by the house on my way home from having a facial and some of the trim boards are installed and most were cut and leaning. I sold the house to my son and his friend. A third buddy was planning to rent one of the other bedrooms from them but asked if he could go in as a partner. I asked my son to talk to the other and see if they would consider postponing the move-in date so I wouldn't have to move twice. They don't want to miss out on pool season but the pool is still frozen solid so I probably won't even have it fully operational yet by June 1. They are going to talk it over tonight. It would probably cost me close to $1000 for the extra move and storage and I'm willing to give them the money instead. crossing my fingers.

Your house is going to be incredible with your great taste! I love the granite you chose. I'm really getting into the carrara marble and the grey veined granite after seeing so much brown, brown, brown out here in the desert southwest. The blue and purple flecks sound so beautiful; I don't think I've ever seen anything like that.

Building a house is a marathon, isn't it? It must be fun to see the trim going up and having it all come together. Hang in there, I'm sure it will be well worth the wait.

Very exciting! It is such a lot of work to get everything done for a new house but well worth it. I love your selections. Looking forward to seeing more selections and pictures. Has spring finally arrived? It has here and it is time to get the lighter clothing out. It always feels like a switch goes from one day to the next.

Everything sounds like it's coming together beautifully! How lucky were you to find drapery in exact colours and sizes that you were needing?

LOVE LOVE LOVE the granite you chose - such gorgeous colours.

Mid June - you must be getting pretty excited. Has the whole process been better or worse than you expected?

Wasn't it a gorgeous day today? And more of the same tomorrow. Looks like spring has finally arrived

Hello lovely ladies,

My attendance on YLF has been sparse to say the least. I have been busy working on some of the details for the new house. Last weekend, I went shopping for fabric for drapery panels for the great room, dinette and MBR and found beautiful pre-made panels in the pattern and color I had envisioned. The quality was excellent and they were made with a lining that was close to black-out and also provided additional insulation. They were 8' too so ideal. I also found really nice rods for the 5 windows I was focused on. They are 1" rods with a large crystal end. Simple and elegant but with a bit of added sparkle.

I hit a snag on Monday when I went to select the granite slabs. A shipment of 30 slabs of the granite I had selected came in but the only ones that weren't reserved had too much of a gold/yellow undertone to work and no more were going to be received on time. I went to another granite supplier about 1.5 hours outside the city and found these two beauties. The first is Azul Aran and the second is Vintage. The portion on the right of the Vintage is a large pure quartz piece. The best part is that both slabs are wide enough to do the L shape in the peninsula without any seams. Yay.

We decided to go with the Azul which has really interesting grey blue and hints of amethyst in the veining. I wanted to add sparkle, pattern and a hint of color to the kitchen with the counters. I plan to get a matte finish 4" x 16" tile for the backsplash in a mid range taupe that ties in to the granite.

I met the builder last week and we are shooting for mid-June possession. The walls were painted and they were installing the trim boards and doors and framing in the soaker tub. They still need to pour the basement floor but need to wait for more frost to come out of the ground. It is 15C today so that will help.

I also managed to go buy two pairs of pants for my upcoming trip. It doesn't feel warm enough for spring/summer clothes and too warm for winter. Gack.
