What's funny is that DH has some hot flashes too at night. Men aren't immune to changing hormones either (I think a lot of them just don't admit it). I'm researching pregnenelone a lot because it seems to make such a dramatic difference - like I can literally put it under my tongue and stop a hot flash in it's tracks - difference. They say too much can cause insomnia, and anxiety but I've been taking some of mine just before bed on purpose and I have been sleeping at least the first 4 hours without issue, then sometimes I do get slightly warm and wake up, but once I go to the bathroom and have a drink of water I'm cold again and ready to get under the covers. I may try the transdermal form of it too as I'd prefer not to have everything go through my stomach and liver.

I'm going off the pill; just have to finish the packet I started. I'm not menopausal, but I'm 54 years old and figure it's high time I quit taking it. I'm also doing it so I can get tested to see if I'm estrogen dominant (something my naturopath wants to know about). I hope I don't get hot flashes. Sounds like misery!

I've been using Promensil since the beginning of December - I started with the single dose and last month went to the extra strength. It has pretty much eliminated the 40 plus hot flashes I was having and allowed me to sleep again.

Just thought I'd add an update - the stuff I was doing worked for quite a while, then as I backed off for a few months some - they came back worse. So now I'm using Pregnenelone without DHEA but a higher dose and also using a product called Remifemin (black cohosh and a few other things) and it is helping again. Still getting some minor hot flashes and waking a couple times at night but not nearly as bad as it was there for a while. I'm not sure how safe it is to use Pregnenelone (no one has really done long term studies) but the alternative is pretty awful so I'm giving it a go to try and at least get my levels up.

For those who fear menopause: I think I'm a bit like Lara; at best I had warm flashes. I run cold, so maybe that's why? I really like the absence of PMS and absence of fluctuating hormones.

So, the omegas/vitamin E did help a bit but not enough. Maybe it was a placebo effect. Still struggling mostly at night as I really need a full 8 hours and I'm getting like 2 hours, then waking and then maybe another hour, etc. all night long. I'm back trying the Black Cohosh and a few other things I've been reading about. Still taking the vit. E and Omegas as I figure it can't hurt.

I'm pretty active too, and eat a really good diet (grow a lot of my own organic vegetables, eat lentils, beans, organic eggs and chicken, no processed food or sugar, etc.). But I am anemic (chronic thing) and have hypothyroidism, so that could be a factor too.

My doctor said to increase my progesterone cream so I'm doing that too. It could take a couple of weeks to notice a change there.

Now I suppose I'm just venting as I don't really have much more to add.

Thanks for the input and continued input if anyone has added advice.

I am 57 and began menopause around age 47. I have never really had full blown hot flashes, just periods of being a little too warm. In the beginning I would get night sweats, but they went away a while ago. I have never taken anything fir any of my symptoms. I have always been physically active and have read that this keeps hot flashes away. One thing I do when I begin to feel very warm is drink ice water. That really seems to help.

The bad thing about menopause is the lack of quality sleep. You know when you wake up around 2 am and can' t get back to sleep. Yoga has helped me tremendously with this pkus I have an aromatherapy diffuser in my bedroom that I run all night long. My husband said he is even sleeping better since I got it. I use 2 essential oils, lavender and eucalyptus.

IK, I chose to do HRT. I was having frequent hot flashes interspersed with major chills, which combined with my migraines, made me feel like I was really on the edge. Mine were extreme; most women's aren't like that. They would intensify late in the afternoon and go all through the night, and they would cycle many times an hour. I would also get really cold before I would get the hot flash, and then after getting all sweaty, I would get cold again. It was truly ridiculous.

I use an estrogen patch and take progesterone by mouth. It only took a few weeks for the hot flashes/chills to pretty much disappear, so it works well for me. However, if I didn't have so much on my plate healthwise, I'm not sure what my decision would have been.

I've had hot flashes for awhile now but they've really stepped up their game in the past year, happening at all times of the day, not just at night. They do seem to be more prevalent when my period is MIA.

Does anyone get hot flashes only in their hands? That's a weird one that I've been having for about 6 months. I still get the regular all over hot flashes but this is different. It's more fleeting -- lasts only seconds -- and involves both hands from the wrists down, simultaneously. As far as I can tell, it is not related to typing/repetitive strain. It doesn't hurt. My hands don't change color, though DH reports they get very hot to the touch. I just get this weird flushing, or blushing, feeling. It happens on and off, all day long. The only way I can describe it is that it feels like my hands are embarrassed. But just my hands. It isn't related to emotions or stress or anything like that. It occurs for no apparent rhyme or reason.

As for the power surges/hot flashes/leave you dripping/wake you up at night, I've tried everything from diet to no alcohol to omega 3 and a variety of other supplements. Limiting alcohol helps, but does not eliminate them. The rest didn't really make any difference. Best strategies are more about dealing with them: turn thermostat down low before bed. Sleep in barely any clothes or nothing, with only a sheet over, or a special down comforter designed for hot flashes. Keep cold water on your night stand and a small, quiet fan that you can turn on as needed.

I won't do HRT in a traditional form, but have used progesterone cream for years and have recently been trying a similar estradiol product. I do feel that the good omega oils and vitamin E are helping me, but when you take several things sometimes it is hard to tell for sure. I may try bio-identical hormones if it gets really bothersome. I'm lucky in that I don't get sweaty, just weirdly hot for about 3 mins. then really cold. In fact, most of the time I'm cold these days. They've been less frequent the past few days and I know sometimes they can come and go.

Don't worry IK, if this is the worst of menopause, it's not that terrible. At least there's no more monthly to deal with.

I've already been losing weight (on purpose) and may try to get down to a pretty thin weight as I really do feel that it helps reduce symptoms. DH asked if I'd have to buy all new clothes. lol. Not that he minds.

IK, I'm pretty much at full stop now and so far hot flashes haven't bothered me much over the last few years. I never wake up drenched in sweat, so maybe I'm lucky in that respect. Main symptoms for me have been anxiety, stress and bad sinuses, all of which are commonly linked with menopause.
I meant to say also that I don't take HRT nor will I. Not a fan of the idea.

BTW did you ladies know that vitamin E capsules used as a pessary can combat.. ahem... intimate dryness.

I thought the Black Cohosh was working, but now I just think that they come and go. I do 2-3 months on, 2-3 months off. I can pinpoint the exact day they stop and the exact day they start, it's so sudden. They just started again after a 3 month (to the day) reprieve and I'm just glad that this time, so far, they are warm rather than hot!

I use natural progesterone cream, and red clover extract. This helps lessen the intensity, and during the day I have fewer "power surges" that leave me visibly dripping, but they are not gone. I don't know if this a normal decline as menopause progresses, or if this is due to the supplements!

At night I keep an insulated cup ( with a straw) with ice water. It helps me to cool down quickly , and the hydration is good, too!

Kim, I'm taking daily - 400 mg. Omega 3 from fish oil, 200 mg. of Borage Oil and 400 - 800 IU of Vitamin E. I take a lot of other supplements but these and the bifodophilis are the new things I've added and since have seen a result.

Hmmmm, I have Omega 3 fish oil upstairs. How much are you taking? (I haven't slept through the night for, let's see, it's gotta be since November when I went off the "pill", due to hot flushes. I don't care if I sweat, I just wish I didn't have to wake up 30 seconds before and then during the entire thing EVERY. SINGLE. TIME....Lol!

So, we've had some discussion on this before and back then I *thought* I had found a solution in Black Cohosh, Hawthorne and drinking less wine. Well, fast forward to the past 2 months and that solution burned out so to speak. SO, after loads of researching again, and some experimentation, I have recently been taking some supplements with Omega 3 oils and noticed that along with vitamin E supplements, and some bifodophilis supplements (not sure which thing is helping most) it seems to be helping quite a bit. I slept through the night 2 nights so far without waking up.

Only time will tell - and I'll try to report back. I've also lost some weight, been eating a lot more vegetarian again, and I've been adding a lot more lentils, garbanzo beans, and other high quality fiber foods to my already vegetable heavy diet. I've greatly reduced the amount of wine (didn't have any for well over a month and now feel that only one glass is enough for an evening, unless it's a special occasion).

Anyone else find a good solution to the hot flash problem?

___________________

Update 4/21 - I've been continuing the vitamin E with breakfast and dinner plus taking 7 Keto Dhea 10 mg and Pregnenolone 10 mg 2 times a day and using Progesterone Cream 2 times a day (instead of just one) and the flashes seem to be pretty much gone (for now at least).

The Vitamin E and extra Progesterone may be the only two things needed, but from my own research I decided I wanted to take the other items. I still take magnesium at night and other various vitamins and probiotics, but I was already taking those.

Update 5/15 - Still working for me as above.
