Annagybe, very cool—thanks! That should be a delicious dessert for the brunch.

Talked through menus with fam last night. Thumbs up for the Christmas brunch, although one of the carnivores is going to make bacon, so we’re nixing the salmon, and she, the celiac, wants to make cinnamon buns for her family. Have at it, sis! She’s also doing the chicken skewers on Thai day.

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions!

ETA, Sloper, we must’ve been writing at the same time. I missed your ideas entirely. Appreciate the recipe for muffin tin frittatas—when I make them for myself, I wing it, so I’d been thinking I needed a recipe to make them for a dozen people. The fruit skewers are also a good idea—yummy baked fruit without calorie & gluten- carrying pie crust. Adding them to the menu

And now one sister, the one who just yesterday was arguing with me over who would stay at our parents’ and who would go to a hotel, has told me that on Monday, she tested positive for Covid. She is being very blithe, assumes that she’ll be fine by then.

L’Abeille, thanks for the ideas. I might do strawberries & kiwi on the pavlova, with a slice of starfruit in the middle. I was curious about the poinsettia drink, because the plant is poisonous. Good thing it isn’t involved in the drink!

Unfrumped, yum!

JenniNZ, thanks for coming through!

But right now I’m fairly subdued about the whole thing.

I also love Nigella's poinsettia cocktail- you could find alternatives to the alcohol if not drinking at brunch!

Here is a nice salmon recipe- we eat a similar one each Christmas that my SIL Jo makes. https://www.rnz.co.nz/collecti.....d-cucumber
And a bit of a different type of salad- Ruth Pretty is a well-known caterer, also runs cookery courses.
https://www.rnz.co.nz/collecti.....peppermint
And the picture especially is how our pavlovas look. I cheat and buy mine at the supermarket and then just whip the cream and put the fruit on. May be a bit much for a brunch?
https://mismatchedpassports.co.....va-recipe/
Just by Googling you might find more things we do- try Googling Australian too, I think the traditions would be similar.

Here are 2 photos of a favourite Christmas salad. My DH gave me the blank recipe book in 1989 and it was stuck in there not many years after. Now I see that you don’t eat most meats, but others may? We call this Christmas chicken salad- recipe says turkey which we have never used. You could leave the meat out because the joy of it comes from the colours of the celery, strawberries, grapes, slivered almonds etc, and you could change the dressing a bit.

I'm trying remember the special holiday dishes we used for a South African Christmas. The one we still maintain is a red and green fruit salad on Christmas morning. I have done strawberries and kiwifruit, or watermelon and honeydew. Often I will add a slice of starfruit to each serving. One year I used a Santa Claus melon!

If you have a ring mold or tube pan, you can use it to serve a composed dish in the shape of a wreath. Garnishes either sweet or savoury can be in the shape of holly leaves and berries.

Candy cane ice cream is popular (with me anyway!) or you can sprinkle crushed candycanes on a peppermint mousse or grasshopper pie. Here in Acadie, stores carry multiple kinds of Bûche de Noël or Yule Log cake, including several ice cream versions. Probably not so easy to find off season though.

LaPed, perfect! Every accompaniment I could think of for that—miso soup or summer rolls—just repeated the ingredients of the bowl. Your ideas are great! Chicken skewers will placate the carnivores, and we’ll all enjoy those beverages. I love Fever Tree, just by itself. The cranberry addition sounds festive for that day.

Joy, there are a couple little palms in the lanai enclosure around the pool, but I’m doing the train because none of them will be decorated (because they aren’t accessible to decorate easily).

Thanks Sal. A pavlova would be really special. Love the pomegranates idea too, and sparkling drinks. Trying to think what to add cranberries to other than muffins /bread that contain gluten. Might just put them in a simple greens salad.

So, so far the “Christmas” brunch spread is
Cranberry gingerale, sparkling apple juice, sparkling wine, and cinnamon iced tea (might throw pomegranates into some of these)
Muffin-tin frittatas (like quiche but no crust)
Melon salad with watermelon, honeydew, and fresh mint
Fresh greens tossed with cranberries and pistachios (maybe feta on hand for the lactose tolerant to add in)
Cucumber sticks, cherry tomatoes, maybe other crudités
Possibly salmon
Pavlova, pizzelles, and iced “hot” chocolate.

Now I’m hungry!

You could do Joy's idea of quiche and bake them in muffin tins for individual servings.

Or make individual frittatas (no crust, and you can leave out the milk/cream). Maybe make 2-3 batches to meet the dietary needs of different folks - with & without cheese, meat/fish, spinach, etc. Of course you'd then have to make signs to show which was which, or just make one that everyone can eat.

This is a frittata recipe-without-recipe guideline I've used before:
https://food52.com/blog/21261-.....t-a-recipe
(Also a good website for other ideas.)

Also the melon balls sound refreshing and colorful. Or do fruit skewers.
Raw or roasted veggie skewers - at least the family can see what is on them and pick off what they don't want.

Hummus with vegetables to dip, pita for those who can eat it.

The traditional NZ christmas might have some of the following
- ham on the bone with salad - but that might not work
- smoked salmon
- pavlova and berries (contains eggs)
- sparkling drinks (champagne or apple juice as two examples)

Salads with pomegranate seeds or cherry tomatoes look festive or adding dried cranberries and pistachios (red and green)

My older relatives had a huge variety of dietary restrictions including no spice or fiber or artificial colors or flavors. No red meat, soft foods, and more depending on who was around the table. Even then we had to rush my Dad to the ER during a Thanksgiving dinner with something stuck so he was not able to breathe. Older people of a certain generation will not tell you much.
Good luck with your brunch. Will you have a palm tree or something for people to put packages under?

I'd get some good, high-end ginger beer (like Fever Tree or Reeds) for drinks. Good straight, or in cocktails/mocktails. Add a splash of cranberry juice and it looks festive but tastes refreshing. You could also do an iced chai or Thai iced tea to get that sweet-spicy-cold combo. The Asian-style noodle bowl, plus some spring and/or summer rolls, maybe some little satay skewers (some tofu, some chicken/beef)... yum! Another thought: maybe a big Waldorf salad and a variety of bruschetta?

Salted caramel. Now there’s a flavor combo I love. How am I going to do it, and make it christmassy? Is that the cocoa? I feel like part of this is that since we’ll be hanging out poolside, people might not want a lot of super filling foods. So more emphasis on the melon balls & snow cones, less on fudge & such. I need to get pizzelles to go with the salted caramel iced hot chocolate, as well as a recipe for it. Or maybe I should not stress and accept that it’s this easy. https://www.simplymaderecipes......chocolate/

Joy, wow, you are a real pro! Such good ideas. Thank you. I’m thinking on some of the flavors you mentioned. You’ve got me off to a good start. I should be able to get green beads from St Patrick’s day, will either string them between the train cars like tinsel or use them on the table, with some kind of red runner or placemats.

Rachylou, the iced cocoa sounds yummy. Is it fancier than chocolate milk with a splash of peppermint?

There’s a shop over in Hipsterville, where I used to live, that does an iced hot chocolate. It’s quite good!

I’m trying to remember what we’d do for Carribean Christmas. Tinsel? For a brunch, I know waffles would make me happy

Brunch: maybe a quiche or two. I mode one with salmon recently that was tasty but you can use a variety of fillings.
Red and green melon balls in a pretty clear glass bowl maybe with some chopped fresh mint leaves. Mimosas to drink or iced cinnamon tea..
A dish of spiced nuts. Bring out the flavors of Christmas like peppermint, cinnamon, cloves, oranges, gingerbread, chocolate, cookie dough, fruitcake. Serval might be found in ice cream ( not for the lactose intolerant but you may find a way.) Snow cones? A red and green table cloth. Red flowers. It sounds like fun.

Knock on wood, cross your fingers, press your thumbs, but don’t jinx us! It looks like we are going to visit family late March/early April. That’s already Easter, but we will be a holiday behind, as we never sent Christmas presents last year.

We will be in Florida, with daily highs near 90 (30). At night, it might get into the 60s (upper teens). I’d like to set a Christmas mood one morning. We won’t have a tree, but I think I’ll set up a little train similar to this one, on the lanai by the pool. I’m making lunches, so here is my request: I need things that “taste like Christmas” but are not warming. Hot cocoa is *the* winter beverage to me, but it’s out. Because it’s our whole family, all the food sensitivities come into play—lactose, gluten, and the chemical in brassicas & spinach all need to be avoided. I eat eggs and some fish, but not other meats.

On other days, I’ll make a salad Nicoise and a sort of Asian-influenced bowl with noodles (vermicelli for the gluten-intolerant), tofu, leeks, carrots, and soy sauce/sambal oelek dressing. For a Christmas brunch though, I’m stumped. I’d love to do a collection of finger foods, but what?

What decor and food suggestions do you have? I’m thinking lots of sparkly lights, but am honestly a little stumped about the meal, would appreciate any ideas, please & thank you!
