LAR101, thanks for those ideas! I’m so frustrated with him right now. Sent him pix from the Christmas market & askedwhat he wants. He doesn’t know. I threatened that he'll get nothing but home made cookies.

For the single guy: Tools! …. As in ‘you can never have enough tools’. The Leatherman Skeletool is an elegant design or the Leatherman micro tool is easy to stash in a glovebox and it’s so… cute! Possibly a Lego Architecture set.
If he bikes, there are more useful bits & tools. Chocolate Truffles? Restaurant or Food gift certificate? Some useful basic for the kitchen that he doesn’t have?

RoseandJoan, thanks for that second name too. I’m sending both of those suggestions to my mom, so we can set them out alongside the higher-octane “cheer”.

Idk if the single guy ever got into the habit of pouring a drink to relax in the first place. Used to come over around supper time every day, never wanted a bite, refused every drink except tap water, and didn’t even want a slice of lemon in that. It has been ages since he competed as a body builder, so I assume he no longer eats baby food, but I genuinely have no idea what there will be to eat at his house. I’m packing my own breakfast food, lol.

I haven't had an alcoholic drink in a couple of years due to a non serious health condition but I'm still looking for an adult alternative that recreates that ritual of pouring a drink to relax.

Non-alcoholic spirit is a growing market so I'm sure your son could find something to suit his palette. I believe sipsmith is the market leader (at least in the UK).

RoseandJoan, that is really intriguing! Maybe also for my family—it was really odd after our last couple visits hear my teenage son complain about the drinking (No one is getting falling-down drunk, but there were beverages very early in the day, and strongly-encouraged Happy Hours).

Ohhh, I like the vintage book idea! I have an idea of one for my college friend, will have to keep my eyes out at the guy’s place for ideas for next time (assuming there is a next time). I agree with you on what makes a good gift. Food is fraught with the college friend too—she is trying to lose weight, and I want to support her.

I salute your gifting thoughtfulness and creativity!

I don't know if my ideas come up to your mark, but thinking back the memorable gifts I've received, it's been the one's that show that giver picked up on one of my interests, or remembered an off-hand comment, and found a gift that riffed on that.

For gifts I've given, I try to do the same (hopefully!!!!). I like to give books about a subject I know the recipient in interested in. Either something new, or an old out-of-print book. Or giving something that my locale is known for (usually a specialty food item - though you mentioned that wouldn't work for one friend).

Kkards and SarahD8, I think you are both on the right track with gifts of food or other consumables for the couple in their 70s. More tchotchkes in their house is truly not what they need. I love uncommon goods (it’s a B corp) and know they have food, but haven’t looked at those items that closely; maybe I should.

Sadly, I think my photos with them were among those stolen from the storage locker. The older couple probably would’ve had fun looking at times I spent with their family when I was in college and their kids were in middle school. It’s always fun to see your kids grow. My college friend might get Ampelmann cookie cutters and an apron like Angie posted recently: “your opinion is not in the recipe!” The single guy is still a problem—they’re always hard to buy for. His diet and exercise have been entirely on point for decades, beginning before I met him, and he doesn’t drink any alcohol or caffeine, so tons of presents, including food & drink, would be inappropriate, or at least very tricky.

Nikki, that’s pretty!

Rachylou, that would be truly appreciated by each of these 3 households, if only I had the eye to pick something out for each of them.

I love gifts of food, especially food that might be unique from your region. Also good for old friends, framed photos or a photo book of your times together ( I have a friend who puts together the best books thru Shutterfly). I also happen to love when people give me flowers, especially if they are in a pretty vase. For people who like to cook, an apron with some kind of tie to your region or some kind of gadget

I think of host/ess gifts (something consumable and slightly luxurious) as a bit different from gift-gifts (like you described in your original post) so not sure I am on the right track here. But — how about a jigsaw puzzle? Fun activity and there are SO many designs representing all sorts of different interests. If you expect a crowd to be puzzling together, I like designs that have areas of distinct colors so one person can work on the red section, another blue, etc.

A catalog from a company called uncommon goods just landed in my mailbox. Some overpriced stuff and some fussy tat, but some nice things too — maybe worth a whirl around their website to see if that sparks any ideas (not necessarily to buy from them, but to brainstorm).

I am the world’s worst gift giver. I don’t like people to get too excited, lol. But my work child sent me a nice card-sized, kitchen-related original print, worthy of being framed. Not too fancy, but not a poster, IYKWIM. I thought that was very nice.

Tanya, that sounds like a good “just in case” thing to tuck in my bag. It could work for almost anyone (though I’d have to be careful about caffeine). I just went back and reread your thread. I never did post on it because I wanted to say something about how very many books have white protagonists, and assume the rest of the world is white too. I wanted to post other suggestions, but was repeatedly afraid of sounding preachy. Also, all the suggestions made me miss having a little one around! My son is the youngest cousin—the oldest is in his 30s, so I could enjoy that kind of shopping for a long time before it was for my own child. I’m impatiently waiting for grandnieces & -nephews now, but it will be a while!

Not unique at all, but a good fallback, is a giftbox of fancy teas, assuming the recipients like tea. I asked the forum for
recommendations in the summer when I was visiting a friend, and they had many helpful suggestions including this one, which was a hit.

I love giving gifts. I take my time picking things out, making notes to myself months in advance when I notice a need/want or see something I think a certain person would really like.

I hate the crush of being forced to come up with “something good” for people in a list because a certain date is approaching.

This fall, I visited old friends. I gave one couple a “breakfast board” (Germans use small cutting boards to eat simple meals from) with a burned-in Berlin skyline. The round part of the TV tower on Alexanderplatz is replaced with a hole for a boiled egg (also a thing in Germany) and there is a magnet embedded in the cutting board that a spoon (with which to eat the egg) can stick to. They loved it. Passed it back and forth several times, referred to it later, etc. They are very creative people in their 70s who have spent lots of time in Germany & Vienna, and have everything they need, so SCORE. To a college friend, her husband, and their daughter, I gave fountain pens with multiple nibs (because the husband & daughter are artistic) and finger towels/soaps with the East German Ampelmann. (The figure used for walk/don’t walk signs; West Germans began replacing it at unification, as many East things were being shut down or replaced by the West; people complained and the little guy stayed). SCOREd again, because they love fighting for the little guy.

Now I’m visiting the same folks over Christmas, as well as an artistic guy who is a fighter against racism. I’m fresh out of ideas. I’ll see them after Christmas, so doubt a box of assorted homemade cookies would work (also, dietary reasons I won’t get into for 2/3). Alcohol-related gifts also aren’t a thing for most of them. The college friend pointed out that they had framed a poster I gave them years ago, and it hangs in their home, so I feel a bit of pressure.

What unique gifts are you giving this year? It’s unlikely I’ll copy directly, but maybe hearing other peoples creative ideas will get me thinking.
