In lived in HK for almost 7 years and I have to say that sometimes the shopping can be a little disappointing. It depends on your budget and size. Some sizes are much harder to find there.
For luxury, there are some great places to shop in Central and Causeway Bay.
In SoHo there are some fantastic small boutiques. Polkadot Boutique has a lot of things from designers based in Asia. Love it Boutique is owned by Australians. Ocho and Tiare are also good. There are many many others.

If it is still there, In Wan Chai there is an amazing boutique called Sonjia on Sun Street in the Star Street area. (things change very quickly there)

And there are several designers that I know who don't have a store but would be happy to set up an appointment with you. My friend Brigette's brand is called Viniga If you give her advance notice, she'll make an appointment for you and your friend in her studio. You can shop her current collection (which is AMAZING) or she also does couture.

I could give you more but you might not have time to get to them all!

I haven't spent a great deal of time in HK and Angie is perfectly placed to answer your query!

I agree that Japanese department stores (in Tokyo, singapore, HK) are great- you can find the perfect thing that you never knew you needed!! Love tokyo hans!! I would be hesitant to recommend foodstuffs from that region.

The ladies markets in HK are great for trinket type gifts (fans, scarves, chopsticks etc) but be prepared to haggle (check Internet for tips, do not accept the first price offered). Some people rave about the 'knock-off' handbags.

Takashiyama. Central and Causewaybay. So nostalgic. we visited every other year until I was in my late teens- my aunt lived there until China took over.

Having been raised in HK, reading about all this makes me so nostalgic! In addition to the great recommendations already mentioned, check out local chains Veeko/Wanko. Try G2000 if you need chic business-career type clothes. Tung Chung has the only "outlet" mall in Hong Kong, full of international and local name brands. I second Ladies Market for a different, "authentic traditional" shopping experience (aggressive haggling is acceptable, even expected, here)

I really need to get myself to Hong Kong, I miss it too much

I also second Giordano being a fun place to shop - my cousin goes in and buys one of each of their collection in her size - they mix and match very nicely.

My dad and I also like to go to the Lane Crawford to stare at rich people:p

Ah. I see it differently to Karymk, actually. I know HK shopping like the back of my hand (I lived and worked there), and find the availability, style assortment, price assortment and quality superior to what we have in the US. There is nothing in the world like shopping in HK. I'm exhilarated writing this.

I would head straight to the Japanese department stores: Isetan, Seibu and Takashimaya. Then I would go to local chains Joyce, and Giordano (the high-end version).

Shanghai Tang is a fun shop to visit - beautiful inside - and the packaging of their gifts is sublime. But the clothes leave me cold.

Central and Cause Way Bay are best for shopping.

My word. Where do I begin with the food? I think you need to take me along in your suitcase.

Oh dear, Hong Kong is so $$$$ and they have much of what we have. I guess Shanghai Tan would be a cool store to visit, with more Chinesey stuff. I love the Ladie's Market too!

A friend and I are going to Hong Kong for a week next weekend, and shopping for fashion is high on our agenda. Any must-see shops, must-have items or other Hong Kong fashion advice? I am thinking of using it as a chance to stock up on winter basics as all the nice thin merino knits we get here seem to be made in China! Is it particularly good for any specific clothing types/styles?
