I am sure you have thought of this but I did not give up our office/spare room for DD#2. The girls share a room. If you are interested I would be more than happy to share what worked (and didn't) for us. Kids are pretty resilient and adjust pretty quickly. Of course there have been challenges but 3+ years later we rarely have issues. A lot depends on the personality of your oldest. Mine is very sensitive, not the easiest kid (understatement) but she is out once asleep. It has worked out really well for us. Any woo, just a thought. And on the office, do you have a closet or nook you could have something built into. My brother is a custom cabinet maker and has done really cool offices for clients in closets, end of halls, books and the like. It really surprising how little space you really need.

I ordered one of these and have been very happy with it:
http://www.hardwoodfurniture.c.....r-desk.htm

I ordered the one with the mission-style frame.

It is a little pricey, but it looks nice and has lots of surface area. The maker can also stain the wood whatever color you want so that it will match your current furniture.

I don't really have any suggestions except to say that we are also giving up our office for DD2. Our long term plan is to have a desk built into the bay windows in our dining area (open floor plan). But we haven't figured out what to do in the short term. I'll be interested to see what you come up with.

Thistle would you be comfortable showing us a picture of the family room?
I have moved my full time home office to our living room. I have a lovely desk with a glass inset surface. It does have a computer tray for the keyboard but it can be pushed in and closed up.
I also have a computer table in the family room which is combined with the kitchen. It is there for the kids to do homework. I don't love it but it works in a very tight space. It is from the Michael line at Ikea.

What style is the other furniture in your room, Thistle? That would be the first consideration, I think. Then go from there.

I actually had my desk built for me to fit into my very small home office. I am using a corner style desk. Though most days I am on the laptop more often.

This is probably unhelpful, but you have to google "computer chair ultimate."

My brother, who's a cinematographer, has the open plan living space thing going on. He's got one long wall of work tables with desktop tower, RAID, screens, etc. etc.

If there's to be any hope of stylishness, I sort of think you have to go that way. Think "command center." Also, gaming at a roll-top desk, even if it looks more living-roomy-y - that's not that comfortable IMO.

We have a very simple desk from the Ikea Gallant line and have been happy with it. DH wanted something long and deep so he can spread his stuff around as he works. But the vibe may not jive with your living room furniture. Take a look at workspaces on Lifehacker, they have a lot of ideas on cable management, storage etc.

So, we are giving up the computer room for DD2. I have cleaned out the closet, bookshelves, etc. now, to move the desks.

We are planning to move the home office to our family room, but almost all of the desks are designed for a laptop. We have a very high end desktop (DH built it himself as the ultimate gaming machine before DD1 was born. It still runs circles around my work laptop.)

Anyway, we have not been able to find real furniture to accommodate it. And if it's going to be in the living room, I would like it to be real furniture.

Any suggestions on where to look?
