Janet - what an amazingly perfect gift!! My husband is incredibly difficult to buy for too. So I really feel your angst. I spend all year listening for little clues of what he might like. I pulled off what you are doing with a millennium holiday/new year/b'day gift. He has never "coveted" anything until he saw a friend's broadway fazzino. It had all of his favorite shows and it was way, way, more than I had ever spent on something that we did not buy together. Plus it was huge. It's still his favorite thing. So kudos for listening and getting him exactly what he wants. While your worrying about where to put it, I'll tell you when we renovated our house we build an all seasons room and planned the fireplace wall and lighting just for this piece. Hopefully your sculpture won't require that kind of dedication but I'll never top that gift!! Good thing is when you do this you never have to hit it so far out of the park again!! Enjoy your holiday and that marvelous gift!!

Anne, your comment about the cricket match reminds me of my most recent gift success story with my husband. We are both huge baseball fans, and he's a baseball player as well. I got him a wallet with an inset piece made from a game-used baseball from our favorite team. He loves that wallet!

I also find it hard to buy a present for my DH. Like yours, he has a much higher tendency than me to just go out and buy what he wants!

For two years I gave him a ticket to a one day cricket match, but he told me this year he actually preferred to watch the cricket inside at home on TV (much cooler, I gather). Since then though, DD9 wants to go, and so he bought tickets for the 2 of them for their Christmas present, which was rather unselfish of him. So that's covered. I have bought him some crystallized ginger so he'll have something on the day, and some small food treats for DD too (One of the advantages of being budgetarily strict most of the year is that I can give her say, a box of GF cornflakes all to herself and she'll be delighted!)

Glad you found a great present Janet!!

I bet your husband will be thrilled with what you have picked !!
My husband never buys clothes and would probably wear the same things year after year unless I updated him lol. He does like wine and I also get him a case of a selection of wines that I think he may enjoy. I don't spend a lot on them as they are just for everyday and not for a special occasion . Special occasions he is fussy about and he picks.

Mine is torture for the same reason-- hard to fit, picky about clothes (although often doesn't buy enough clothes for things like date nights for himself) and buys himself whatever he really wants when he wants it. I wonder how many gifts for the new house I can mask as Christmas gifts, since he is also a big cook and uses sheets? LOL Your sculpture sounds lovely. He has a tool or two I'd like to buy but he wants to do research and it is another sort of pushy gift.
He is worse than me though-- I've gotten 2 gifts in the last 10 holidays.

I feel a bit silly going to the shops with his wish list, a very specific list of auto parts. We both agree I've given him two good presents in the whole time we've been together.
So I feel your excitement that you have just the right gift this year!

Wonderful gift Janet! I just paid the tab on a late winter get-away (with a week of unlimited golf) so both DH and I are looked after. We suggested to our newly adult sons (with limited resources) that this be a 'no gift giving' Christmas. I will be happy to have their feet under the dinner table and play some cards and Mahjong.

For our first Christmas together, I gave my then 'boy friend' a Swiss Army knife. He is a wildlife biologist and forester, so always loves woodsy gifts. I've given him a wooden pen, which he quite liked. I bet he would love the art piece you picked for your DH!

I give a mixture of clothing and experiences. My hubby doesn't do much shopping for himself, so I attempt to fill in the gaps to keep him clothed.
This year he's also getting a "truffle foray" ; a guided hike in the woods in February to hunt for truffles with a truffle hound. Last year it was a local cruise to see tufted puffins.

It delights me to give gifts that no one can anticipate. Happy Holidays everyone!!

That's fantastic! I'm happy you found the perfect thing!

Last year Gentleman Friend and I were pretty new, and I got him a small gift (a couple bottles of nice wine and a pair of fun wineglasses) and he didn't get me anything, which was perfectly fine. This year I am making a photo calendar of our favorite shots from the last year to wrap up for him, and we are going away together for Christmas weekend. I don't expect a wrapped gift and that is more than fine with me. He is the gift that keeps on giving every day of the year! ;)

P.S. for his birthday I surprised him by picking up the bar bill for the birthday party he threw for himself -- now THAT was a gift that was much appreciated! LOL

I don't think it's too pragmatic if it works for you! We don't always do gifts -- we often opt for travel instead. But we did agree to buy each other gifts this year, and not just restrict ourselves to a small thing as we've done in the past.

There have been years we agreed to get each other one book, one CD, and one wild card item of some sort within a certain budget. That has been fun and helps keep the budget in check.

Glad you found the perfect gift, Janet. It sounds like he'll be quite pleased and he's happy to have such a thoughtful, attentive spouse!

We don't really do gifts, so there's no pressure. I bought the SO a birthday gift that i thought he could use, but he didn't get me anything this year or last. I do miss the element of surprise and thoughtfulness that comes with gift giving, but I decided awhile ago that if there was something I wanted, I would get it myself, rather than waiting and hoping. We pool resources, which makes me think that gifts are pointless financially. Too much pragmatism?

I feel your pain! We have a casual life so DH doesn't need clothes or watches and he generally feels like his electronics are fine (I'm more likely to want/buy new gadgets than he is). He spends a lot of time playing computer and specialized board games, which are not things I can shop for easily. I got a friend to pick out a specialized piece for one of his games this year and I'm feeling pretty proud of myself.

He's a maniac for 'the perfect fit' and is also a true-blue minimalist (for his wardrobe). Ask him what we wants (to make my life simpler) and he'll quickly tell me he wants a new car or a motorcycle - neither of which I'm going to buy!

Does anyone else have as hard a time as I do finding a great gift for your SO? (Apologies to those who do not have a SO -- consider that you have one less dilemma at holiday time , but I have been alone for the holidays many times so I understand how it is and don't intend to be insensitive.)

My husband is so hard to shop for. He is one of those "men who have everything" and doesn't care much for doodads and gadgets. He buys himself all the cool stuff he wants when it first comes out, before I can get it for him. It is very difficult to find clothes to fit him -- he is very tall and slim, so even the simplest thing (sweaters, pajamas) rarely fit him well -- XLs are often still too short and too wide. Plus, his birthday is right after Christmas too, so that's an additional wrinkle in the gift-giving plan.

So when he remarked a few times over the course of the last year that he really likes a beautiful bird sculpture he saw in a local shop, I took note. Yesterday I went to the shop and plunked down my credit card. It's an expensive piece, and I'm not sure where we'll put it (it's not small!), but I figure between home and the ranch, we'll figure something out. It's a beautiful, realistic carving of two huge woodpeckers by a local artist. I should have taken a photo yesterday but I forgot as the store was closing while I was making my purchase. It's really kind of perfect for our house, which is in the woods, and we hear and see woodpeckers out in the trees all the time.

Funny thing, the woman who manages the store knows exactly who my husband is! I told her he'd been admiring the piece, and she asked what he looks like. I described him, and she told me she remembered him being there just a month or so ago, which fits the timing of when he last mentioned the piece to me. She said he was so nice, and I said, "Yep, that's definitely him!" :-)

I'm not sure if he'll truly be surprised, since I think he was dropping hints by mentioning it a few times, but it's expensive, and maybe he thinks I wouldn't spend that much. I am so excited to give him this, though! I had to share with someone, so I hope you don't mind me sharing here, where it's safe that he won't see it. It's so rare that I have the perfect gift for him. Last year we didn't do gifts (we had a trip planned, which ended up getting postponed, and later became our Europe trip for my birthday).

I hope you all find the perfect something -- small or large, even if it's just spending the time together -- for the people you love this holiday season!
