I do find that I spend more in general because that is part of the holiday. I have a budget for Christmas every year. This year it will be a bit smaller because of some other expenses that we have had. I find it relatively easy right now not to spend on me : I don't need or want anything and even if I did, it is not budgeted this year. But I do enjoy doing things with other people. So my treat this year will be hooking up with the Fabbers in Boston !!!!! I am soooo excited. I won't shop but I will EAT....LOL

My daughter this year, at 12, wants to do Black Friday. She has Black Friday FOMO for the first time. I say all the time : there is almost nothing that is a once in a lifetime opportunity except for maybe a big trip.

Hang in there.

I can wear cashmere ... but I am finding a lot of cashmeres currently sold in stores are inferior quality. The label says cashmere, my skin says wool. I did some research on the quality of cashmere and the article explained how a garment can carry the label of cashmere and yet be of inferior quality. I wish I had thought to post that information here.

Whenever I buy cashmere now I compare it to older items that are already in my wardrobe. There is no comparison.

I meant to add that I am almost as picky as you about wool, at least in sweaters. I can wear it in true winter but greatly prefer cashmere. So there is definitely a limit to the number of wool sweaters that I should own.

I think many of us spend more during the holidays - it's exactly the point of the season. One of giving. And I don't mean just spending on ourselves - I mean spending on others too. Charities, those we love, pets, friends, and the list goes on.

Sterling, I hope you don't live in a cold place because wool is a necessity then. Rotten luck. Can you wear cashmere?

This year seems to have flown by so incredibly fast that I feel unprepared for the holiday season. I usually have a good deal of my shopping finished by Black Friday but this year I've barely started. I did find a nice leather moto jacket for my daughter at a great price. At the same store I found a satchel in burgundy for me, also inexpensive. So, yes, I do find it challenging to minimize spending during the season. But I do love the holidays and I do love giving presents.

I buy in cash for the holidays. I get a few things for myself but nowhere near a 1 to 1 ratio. If I buy clothing for myself, it will count as one of my 5. That is likely to keep me picky enough.

Yes! I usually start holiday shopping in September so I can spend the purchases over a longer period of time. That didn't happen this year and I fear I am very behind. Plus we have had a lot of new baby expenses so I am more financially strapped than usual.

This is a great time of year. I absolutely love everything about it. I have to admit though that I am at the mall, at the grocery store, or online every single day from mid-October until just after January first. I am usually buying gifts or something for others in my life. However, that doesn't stop me from buying something for myself at the same time. It seems to be a one-to-one ratio. And the Black Friday and After Christmas sales can become an obsession. I can rationalize my purchases so easily at this time of year.

The thing is I don't need anything for myself. Nothing. I just feel that if I don't shop Black Friday and After Christmas, I might miss out on the "deal of my life."

What seems to be holding me in check is a "Needs List." I listed several items that should I come across them I will buy them. But I was very, very specific as to what requirements these items must meet (i.e., length, color, fabric, cut, neckline). It seems that most things I covet don't meet all of the listed specifications. Most often the deal breaker is fabrication. I can't wear wool. So the smallest percent of wool means I have to leave it at the store. I leave it at the store with little regret because I know I can't wear it. Perhaps someone else will find it and love it all the more.

Another deal breaker is oversized or "too fluid" tops. That cut just is not appealing to me right now. I get the sense of "been there, done that" and it bores me. So I am looking for more classic fits. Those seem to be really hard to find (if not impossible).

The sweater illustrates exactly what I mean. This sweater is ideal and I love it, but it contains wool. I had to leave it at the store.

Do you find money management to be hard during the Holiday Season? Do you have any tricks to rein in your spending?
