I am a very pear person and have grown to like skinnies more than any other style at the moment. I also mostly wear them with longer tops. Do you have some nice waterfall cardigan? A good one in neutral color might be all the outerwear you'll need in May.

Thank you Ornella! The post answered my question on jeans in Italy, however now I must ponder leaving home my most flattering pair of bootcut because they are too long for walking shoes. I see you struggled with this issue, too...would you opt for straightleg or skinny? I feel better in skinny but they require my tops to be longer and I'm a slight pear......grrrr.

Love this post, and so helpful. I am going to Europe in a few months, already very stressed about packing in one suitcase. Not sure what to bring and what to buy there (Italy). Some of my most comfortable shoes are Ziera short boots - too warm for May? Are jeans acceptable in Italy? If I were going before March, I would copy your packing to a T!

The outfits I wore are all variations of the one seen in my old thread (you can check it here).

I am attaching the photo of my outerwear, as it happens it was taken in (cough cough) Holland where we stopped for a day on the way back home :-)

@Lynn, yes, I was in boots all the time. They were perfect for winter and both happen to be from Clarkes (shown here). Shorter pair is particularly comfortable and warm, so I wore them most of the time.

@Sylvie, I love the term 'clothing fatigue' I think I enjoy the fact I feel different just changing accessories that I didn't suffer from that. Plus, I was spending most of my time outside, so playing with hats and scarves kept things interesting for me.

@Makrame, I think I'm with you regarding the type of pants for my next trip ;-)

@Aida, LOL - I am firmly on advanced level of Packing Tetris

It sounds like you have your packing down to a science. I found that with my small packing capsule I got tired of wearing the same things over and over again.

How did you avoid clothing fatigue with only 4-5 tops? Is mixing the tops with different scarves what helped you feel like it was a different outfit? (that trick wouldn't work for me because I'd need to take the scarf off indoors)

Love this! Your formula actually sounds like something I could do. One question...you walked all the time in boots? What kind? That is always my biggest style issue as I really like running shoes for lots of walking. Not so pretty!

This sounds like a great travel packing success and I love the photos you have posted so far - they look like a spread from a fashion magazine. :)

The pants/hem length issue is the reason I have switched to packing only skinny jeans or pants for travel - seems easier not to worry about the mud, water or snow this way. I know you look great in boot cut jeans so perhaps this won't work for you - but I have decided to switch to the formula of skinny jeans or skinny ponte pants with long shirts+cardigans for travel, with boots or flat oxfords as the weather dictates.

SMART idea, Ornella - shop for footwear when you are there.

I had to do that in New York early last summer, when my brand new sandals broke irreparably following one of the on/offs for airport security! I was lucky to find a few sales.

Thank you Angie.

@Suz, I completely agree, footwear is probably the trickiest part for the holidays with a variety of events/activities. In my case, I was only 'short' of dressier shoes, but since I need new ones anyway I was prepared to shop and I knew where to go if needed. In the end, the ones I saw were so-so but since I didn't need them, I didn't buy them.

@Amy, too funny. For the next winter holiday in Europe I prescribe: good puffer coat + layer, layer, layer

Ornella! I missed you. So glad to see you're back. I'm impressed with your travel packing. I wish I had had your skill when my husband and I went to Europe last year. While I packed some versatile pieces, I ended up wearing just about everything at once because I didn't bring a coat that was warm enough, lol. I walked around the great fashion capitols of the world dressed like that little boy from "A Christmas Story." So embarrassing!

I'm looking forward to hearing more about your travels and outfits! Happy new year.

Ornella, so lovely to hear from you. And what a wonderful holiday dressing report! Love the scarves, too!

It sounds as if your formula was practically foolproof! It was so smart to identify your actual needs and go from there.

The holidays I find toughest to pack for are those where there will be a wide variety of types of activities /levels of formality. Especially within just a few days. That makes it very challenging, especially in winter, especially for the footwear.

Hello everyone and happy 2012!

I've missed you - how about quick recap of what I have missed in the meantime? I am looking forward to all the catching up.

~

I think the fact I've graduated holiday packing has become perfectly clear during my recent holiday. I have managed to get through a little over 2 weeks away with unbelievably small luggage. The reason: I've clearly identified my dressing needs: comfortable, casual clothing suitable for a lot of time spent outside walking in the cold and very little inside; my styling experiments would revolve mainly around the outerwear, so I gave myself the most options there.

Just in case, I've had my cobalt blue dress on stand-by as it packs easily as is non-wrinkly, as well as b&w polka dot blouse that was dressy enough for the occasions when I did not want to look to casual, but the rest was this:

Clothes (all items marked with * are post-YLF purchases and were the key for the overall success of this experiment):
3 turtlenecks (black, grey, red)
1 b&w stripey top
(*) 2 pairs of jeans (bootleg and skinnies)
(*) 1 ponte knit pants for traveling (I don't think I'll travel in anything else again)
(*) 1 long black waterfall cardigan

Shoes:
(*) 2 pairs of boots (tall black and mid-calf black)

Outerwear:

My dressing formula was super simple and seen before: turtleneck/tee&scarf + jeans + boots + necklace or bracelet, finished off with the cardigan that completed the silhouette and was much needed layer for warmth.

As soon as she saw me, my best friend said that I must have lost some weight, to which I had replied that I hadn't and her conclusion was: "Then you are very cleverly dressed!"

I have managed to look different whenever I wanted, changing just one part of my dressing formula was enough, but better than anything - and this really IS the key - I had felt different. I knew I had looked pulled together as aimless digging through my luggage has no longer been the case. I had all I needed to make me feel stylish, comfortable, warm and - myself.

One thing I will consider doing differently next time, depending on the season, is related to my jeans and something krishnidoux wrote in her early days at the forum - there are times when PPL simply isn't practical. As great as I feel in my long jeans now that we've finally found each other, slightly shorter ones would have been so much better choice as they would not be getting wet or dirty from the pavements or rainy or snowy days.

I'm still sorting through many photos and haven't bumped across one share-able in any of the outfits, but I'm attaching photos of the mix'n'match suitcase content so you can see what the fuss is all about.
