These get made in November and December and cut out using a snowflake cookie cutter without the frosting, or stars with the icing. Like 'engagement chicken' it is a man attractant. Something about the spices seems to draw guys like moth to a flame. This is always the first to go at any desert pot luck.

Holiday Spice Cookies

1 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
2 large eggs
4 cups flour
2 tea spoons baking powder
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon clove
1/2 teaspoon salt

Cream butter, and sugar. Add eggs and cream some more. Add dry ingredients and mix to form dough. Divide dough into 2 parts and pat into a round 1 in thick and wrap in wax paper and put in fridge for 2 hrs or overnight.

Preheat oven to 350deg. Let dough soften at room temperature. Roll out dough using flour to keep it from sticking. Use cookie cutter to cut out shapes. Bake 7-8 min. Cool cookies.

These cookies are great on their own, but you can pipe Royal Icing onto cut out shapes for special presentation.

1 egg white beat for a minute or two--not too dry. 1-1and 1/2 cups icing sugar. Drops of water. Beat for 5 min. Use a pastry bag to pipe the icing on the cookies, and let them set until dry/hard to the touch.

These cookies last up 2 two weeks, and are often at their best when a couple of days old...if they last that long!

Oh, good idea!

This is one of my favorite cookie recipes to make for Christmas gift-giving. I usually see large bags of pistachios (already cleaned) in warehouse stores this time of year, and try to get one to make these biscotti.
http://allrecipes.com/recipe/c.....-biscotti/

We also always make Russian potato salad for New Year's - it's a favorite holiday tradition in many families (my son is always looking forward to once-a-year gigantic tub of this salad). Boil and peel potatoes, eggs, carrots. Finely chop. Add green peas (canned or frozen/thawed), diced onion, lots of chopped pickles, chopped ham or chicken, and mayo. You can also add diced apples or fresh cucumbers. It's a delicious appetizer for New Year's eve meal, and leftovers make a great brunch dish for next day.

I thought it might be fun to have a thread where we all share our favorite holiday recipes. I've been cooking up some delicious treats and they make my house smell so nice!

So here are a couple of mine:

Math Book Gingerbread - The story behind this recipe is that we first found it in one of our elementary school math books. It was meant to teach fractions!

DRY:

1 ¾ c flour

½ t salt

1 t baking soda

2 t baking powder

WET:

1/3 c butter

¾ c hot water

¾ c molasses

¾ c brown sugar

1 T grated ginger root

2 eggs

Mix together wet ingredients, starting with butter and hot water (butter should melt). Mix together dry ingredients. Fold together wet and dry. Pour into a 9x9 inch pan and bake for 30-45’ at 325F until a toothpick comes out clean.

White Wine Poached Pears (adapted from Martha Stewart)

original recipe here: http://www.marthastewart.com/3.....ched-pears

1 bottle fruity white wine - I used a cheap vinho verde from Trader Joe's

~6 cups water

1.5 cups sugar

juice and zest (peeled in big strips) of 1 large lemon

spices if you want (I did not use any, but you could add cinnamon, vanilla, ginger, etc.)

8 pears, peeled, with stems left on

Mix together everything but the pears in a big pot. Make sure there is room for the pears. Bring the liquid to a boil, then add the pears and lower to a simmer. Cook for about 30 minutes or until pears are tender. If the pears float too much, either turn them occasionally or press them down with a smaller pot lid. Let the pears cool in the liquid. If you wish, you can reduce the syrup down more after removing the cooled pears.

You can eat as is, serve over ice cream, or make a tart out of them. And don't forget to save the syrup. It is amazing in cocktails or just mixed with seltzer water.
